I’m not an expert but I’m curious if it would be advantageous to use 2 smaller motors in tandem, like two 75’s for example. It may more evenly disperse the weight and engine torque more evenly. Btw, did I mention I seriously need to discuss a business proposition with you asap ?

Instead of mounting the outboard on the transom you could construct a motor well in the engine compartment for your outboard, that would help with the balance issue

Don't forget that that big heavy engine that you pulled out is not only good for ballast but also for balance.. make sure your weight and displacements are correct before slipping it back into the water.

Hanging an outboard is the way to go, easy to up/down grade motors, easy access for repair/maintenance. generally for every foot you set back, you can raise the motor one inch. You open up the rear of the boat. By setting the motor back, you are making the boat longer which should give a much better ride. Between the motor and bracket, mount a jack plate, raise and lower motor as needed

Good decision on going with an outboard! Once you get the top done, you may want to check the hull for any bubbles. Old fiberglass boats have problems with the gel coat separating from the fiberglass. The gel coat becomes a sponge and starts to rot. To fix this problem, you will need to grind off the gelcozt till you see fiberglass. Depending how thick your fiberglass, you may need to spray it with chopped fiberglass and then epoxy the hull for the final barrier. Then paint it with liquid death. I forgot the name of the paint, but its made to insure there is no growth (barnacles or seaweed) on your hull

Yes I agree, one outboard; maybe a 200hp Yamaha. Bob's machine jack plate, and strengthen that transom, and that should do it. Use a 5-bladed prop, or twin props for more thrust! Another point to consider, is furniture built in, tables, beds, kitchen, shower, etc, those items and layout, need to be carefully thought out and weighed, so that YOU can control the CG of the boat in the end. Outboard, should not matter then...

I/O = Inboard outdrive, or sterndrive. This was pounded in my brain years ago by a Bayliner boatbuilder friend many years ago. If you can stiffen that transom up for an outboard, that would be the best way to go, IMHO. You’ve put a lot of work into that boat. I love seeing it come together.

Before re framing for a new window, consider making a cardboard template of the opening and get a piece of 1/4" plexiglass cut. It won't open though. Also, once you tie all the walls together glass frame (which is basically butt jointed 1x2's offering not much in terms of support) in your boat will tighten right up. You seem understandably worried about the wobble and sagging roof but don't forget that a huge amount of any stability in a fiberglass shell will come from the interior furniture. A good shelf going from floor to roof will do more for the stability than a dozen of those framings, due to them not yet having any diagonal crossbeams giving strength from starboard to port. The door openings take away alot but don't have to be removed or even braced themselves. Once you have furnishings it will be alot more stable. Even how rotten the framings were before the wobble didn't really become bad untill you removed the shelving and bathroom.

Armstrong Nautical is a very popular outboard bracket I see here out on Lake Havasu on converted boats. Porta bracket is popular on small fishing boats in San Diego. In the Pacific Northwest there is a number of fab shops that make them out of stainless. You’re also going to want to add a hydraulic jack plate. Keep in mind you’re adding overall length to you’re boat. (Licensing fees, slip fees, overall towing length) I would also decide now before fabrication or purchase of a outboard deck if your ever going to want a kicker motor.

That's odd that a marina would tell you they don't work on IO drives. They still make them so they have to repair them. On a boat that size a newer IO would be the way to go, I'd say look for another boat that you could use the engine and drive from. Don't give up on this, you're making dream progress.

Used to own a Stuery. To me an outboard is a big step down. Had an OMC 350 and it would get up on plane. No need to do so it would suck gas like crazy. He only needs a small v-6 with an alpha one outdrive. Dime a dozen. He's not going to be charging batteries with an outboard. Had an ambulance alternator on ours. I also run a Steury site and never seen him visit or ask questions.
@smuckola
@smuckola 2 жыл бұрын
@@pgnandt Hey, why did Stuery discontinue the Itty Bitty model after three years like he keeps sayin? Is that normal for boats? At this point, am I correct in thinking that there is now nothing original remaining except a boat-shaped fiberglass shell and windows? That alone should be worth $3000, right? It seems like that wouldn't be cheap anyway, and was precision made at a factory, right? Has it now been rehabbed back to above factory specs or is it really heavy or what? I don't know boats at all, except the part about taking it instantly to a boat specialist!
@pgnandt
@pgnandt 2 жыл бұрын
@@smuckola Well this boat is not a restoration or a refit really. I owned one for about 10 years and it was all original just things added to it.. So it is a bit unsettling to see what hes doing with this boat. But Hey to each is his own.

Steurys were built for inboards. Single outboard would require a longshaft outboard. Just look at the transom. As a previous Steury owner I can tell you your sweet spot will be around 10kts for best speed drag coefficient (best MPG) with an OMC 350. My guess is that once you get her going 5kts that outboard prop sucks air and cavitates. Lower the motor and then the power head goes for a swim. Hence the need for longshaft outboards. Rebuild what you removed. Or downscale to another I/O.

Enjoying the series! My thought is: If you build anything else with wood, consider this will be a marine environment and use properly treated lumber. Eventually the water and termites will be trying to get a foothold again. It would be nice if nothing in there would easily rot or be eaten.

I would look for an I/O 4 cylinder from a wrecked/salvaged boat, that was not in salt water. The Alfa 1 is a good I/O, easy to repair and maintain. You don’t need the speed, just a reliable 4 cylinder and it will get you there and back. An outboard will significantly shift the weight distribution and may require an aluminum float mount to add rear buoyancy.
@pgnandt
@pgnandt 2 жыл бұрын
Yes a small I/O. Used to own one and had an OMC 350. Only 1400 or so RPM to get a nice 10kts. A four banger and an Alpha One would do fine.

Just a thought, a new outboard is about $100 per HP, so a 250 is going to be around $26k. You can buy a new longblock for the inboard motor from summit for about $3k. Paying someone to rebuild it I'd say you could have an engine for around $5-6k, then just have to source an outdrive. And you could get a motor and drive from a boat to just drop in, or just a drive from a boat with a bad engine. All that being said, twins on the back of that boat would look sick.

Should've used some very lightweight 1" steel frame and welded it. The weight and the strength would've been so much better. Like the 1x1x48 everbuilt sold at most hardware stores. Since it's on a houseboat, you simply seal it with Eastwood's internal frame coating. That stuff works excellent and it'd last at least a good 50 years or so. Before you spray it, if you're really worried, you can hit it with Eastwood's Heavy Duty Anti-Rust.

The construction of these things was a lot like campers in the 70's and 80's and 1x2's were used to keep it light, cheap and strong. You'll find that 2x4's make no real improvement, since the strength is only realized once everything is strung together. You can add more 1x2's and do them every 16" instead of say, 24', but still the structural strength of the walls is only apparent once the sheathing is put on and everything is nailed down. Also, Use pink fiberglass in the walls, not hard foam. Hard foam will creak and moan all day driving you nuts and the pink fiberfill won't. You want some insulation to "press" the walls outward some and reduce creaking and of course to help keep the boat cool in the summer. These things were never really designed to be rebuilt, but you seem to be making good headway. Salute.

I'm surpriced you didn't mixed up resin paste mix to glue that frame to the back wall, also could of use fiberglass strips to help secure it to the old fiberglass, so your not just relying on the screws. At the very least, I'd seal all that wood, it's a boat, so it's bound to get wet at some point. An outboard will work fine, I have converted a few larger boats from big block mercruisers to yamaha and suzuki outboards, they all worked great.

that ol motor might be worth the rebuild. generally a motor can be rebuilt multiple times. if its a big block 460 parts for those are in every junkyard across the nation, setup with a HEI ignition and a good carb, or if you have the cash get a Holley EFI sniper system and make it fuel injected. staying 4 stroke will allow you access to more lakes. as for the drive side, simple bearings and seals which most marine shops have.

I don’t know about the motor, but before you out there plywood on the back wall, I hope you put some 2x4’s in to secure your ladder to the roof deck onto

I wouldn't be too worried at all about the engine. Ford used Windsor engines up till 97 and parts are always available. As far as reliability goes It's as about as good of an engine as it gets. But the outdrive is a different story. So your questions maybe should be if a shop can service the drive and install.

You took out all the support. That's why. When you removed the inside walls they helped support and kept it from sagging. And now you're messing with weight? And on the topside? Gotta keep center of gravity and buoyancy. In mind.

I am going in a week to look at a 1973 sea camper identical to the first boat in your first video. This series is so cool but scares the crap out of me if I do buy it. Have you been considering options for electrical? Whatever we get I plan to run a solar panel system. Great work! And very entertaining. Look forward to you next video

if you put a outboard on that boat, you're going to need two outboards.... Outboards lack torque, torque is what you need to move that monster....that's why it had a V8 I/O. you're also going to need to add a bracket that will handle it. You're also going to need to account for the complete shift in CG on the boat, so you're probably going to need to add ballast to the area where the engine used to be.

It's nice just seeing a nice project come together. I am not a big fishing person but I do enjoy boats and projects. I really enjoy your channel man. You are a good dude. As far as the motor, I am always seeing guys drop in like old 350s... 454s... I guess maybe I'm missing something from the engine to where it gets to the prop in the water. But man those old engines if rebuilt right can last you forever. I'm not sure if that's EFI or carbureted but getting a good rebuild and making it EFI, I feel that would be a great motor still for it. But either way 🤷‍♂️. Keep it up brother.

you know when you build out the interior all that structure will support the walls. Remember the bathroom structure you took out? That was WAY better than the 2x4's or anything you can ever do to the walls. Leave it flymsy and when you put in cabinets and tables and structure that will be what strengthens up the walls, it will not move.
