3:55 I encounter this all the time as well. For any professionals who have to write documentation, a good rule of thumb is that good documentation should feel painfully detailed when you or your peers read it. If you read it and ask yourself "do I really need to put all this in there?" it's usually a sign you're on the right track.

And unlike Autodesk, Dassault Systemes seems to be hoping that mindshare alone will incentivise new students to pay around $100 a year for an educational license. Both companies have pretty decent software, but especially with the advent of 3D printers and more and more hobbyists who don't have company credit cards to write the equivalent of a new car off as a "business expense," education editions and a more relaxed pricing model for individuals seem to be gaining some traction. Oh, and Inventor finally got a really nice dark theme.

A fibre cable won't break that easily, the thing that breaks them is a solid shock or cracking it over a very sharp corner for instance. Giving it a shock may cause db loss or db step as it's called sometimes. If you have a single unisolated strand of fibre you can snap it with no force by creating a loop on your fingertip, closing your thumb over it and pulling both ends.

Single mode also doesn't just require a cable and SFP. For short runs, single mode fiber has to be conditioned or you'll burn out your optics.
@DimitriMoreira
@DimitriMoreira 3 жыл бұрын
@@AC-cg4be also, how the hell are they "losing signal"? Unless their cable is crap, fiber optics will not lose any signal. You cannot simply block light and if this was the case, it wouldn't be good for it in the first place. How the fuck are they managing to destroy physics itself?

@xTheHypn0tic
@xTheHypn0tic 3 жыл бұрын
@@DimitriMoreira fiber optic cables will always have some level of light loss, and everyone connection/non-comtinuous run will have an additional spike of light loss at any connector/splice. I believe they used a connector to connect two sets of patch cords, and there's always a decent chance of causing light loss just by handling it. Its much more durable than you think, but still very fragile at the same time. Any sharp bends or too rough of handling will easily cause some additional light loss.
@DimitriMoreira
@DimitriMoreira 3 жыл бұрын
@@xTheHypn0tic yes, loss by handling it or bending is very common, that's exactly why a good cable is hard so it can't be bent. Also, light can never be "lost" (unless it's inside a black hole, but that's another subject). Light gets out. Which you know, semantics in this context. Still, that's why I said that they were using awful cables. I have a 180m setup of fiber optics cable from my house to the ISPs nearest distribution tower and I have literally less than 1% loss of signal.

I'm glad you guys covered fiber connector cleaning, super important! Following up the cleaning tool with a short blast of canned air is a good 1-2 punch for cleaning. Also of note, fiber is not very tolerant of tight bends. While it might not physically damage or break the fiber, the signal will attenuate everely if the cable is bent to a small radius. I'm not 100% about the physical phenomenon that causes this effect, but I believe that the tight bend defeats the total internal reflection of the light inside the core of the fiber and it will "leak" into the cladding

What's great is that even in HFC systems, thanks to both DOCSIS 3.1 (soon DOCSIS 4.0) as well as OFDM (orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing) telecommunication providers are now able to compete with purely copper systems due to OFDM using multiple stacked carriers, providing the ability to reach higher orders of QAM (quadrature amplitude modulation), and a super important factor being the modulation/phase symbol and Forward Error Correction software to greatly reduce the impact of signal issues such as low SNR (signal to noise ratio),MER (modulation error ratio), noise, etc. The easiest way to explain that is the FEC software exists to predict, anticipate, then correct errors associated with the cable modems locked on DOCSIS RX carriers (downstream/forward/receive/RX) of which for most DOCSIS 3.1 e-MTA there are 32 down and 4 up (which can potentially differ depending on placement of OFDM RX and any OFDMA TX carriers). Imagine having a bucket with 1 billion pennies and a friend standing 10 feet away with their own bucket. Let's say you launch all 1 billion pennies into the air from your bucket towards your friends bucket. Your friend will undoubtedly catch a large number of pennies, but many will not make it into their bucket. Now imagine those pennies are each 1 packet of data. This is where the FEC (forward error correction) modulation software comes into practice. It uses an algorithm to predict what those pennies/data packets that didn't make it into your friends bucket were; was it a 1 or a 0? So when there are signal impairments that software tries really hard to correct, cover it up, and mask any service issue to hopefully avoid any disruption or drop in connectivity quality. OFDM is REALLY good at this. Pairing that with DOCSIS 3.1 and DOCSIS 4.0 standards (Google "Cable Labs DOCSIS explained") and HFC coax topologies have massively extended their shelf life and ability to stay competitive with purely fiber applications (head end CMTS to modem. Copper hasn't reached it's full potential yet and with the right software, hardware, and radio frquency modulation I believe you could achieve comparable results to what fiber would net you for THIS SPECIFIC application. The amount of signal loss due to attenuation over coax in your setup here is not sufficient enough to alone warrant the need for a full-duplex fiber star topology, although your symmetrical RX and TX transfer rates probably make it worth it. In Hybrid Fiber Coax (HFC) markets it is light and fiber to each node and from each node to each home or business it is copper (coax/hardline.) I wanted to shout out the Viavi ONX signal level meter for having a fiber USB dongle for measuring light levels in addition to RF signal levels AND another USB dongle that turns your meter screen into a stethoscope screen. The dongle has a microscope and camera, so it shows you if your fiber connector is dirty. If so, one click tool and pray 🙏 lol. Just a bit about me: I'm a commercial and small/medium business field tech for the second largest ISP in the United States and SCTE/NCTI certified "Master Technician". In my duties I install and repair fiber to the premise, POTS, CAT5E and CAT6, and coax. Everything from simple internet repairs to punching down dozens of phone numbers on 66 blocks, repairing PBX and complex coax, generating IP blocks from the CMTS pool, writing scripts and dropping scripts using KiTTY/PuTTy for Gateways + 2 box e-MTa/Router solutions for static IP blocks, configuring GUI, port forwarding, etc., fiber epon and gpon, terminating and troubleshooting fiber/light in keystone patch panels, diagnosing and interpreting RF telemetry using soft tools and Viavi ONX SLM's....the list goes on and on lol you get the idea. Linus, if you ever want any inside scoop from an in-house ISP tech, have any questions or projects I could useful to you for then please, don't hesitate to give a shout. Great video, as usual!!!

i was a fiber installer and the way i usually join two long runs of cable was to splice them by heating the ends until they melt and fuse together to avoid coupling loss. in this example it is probably fine. at one point, i was tasked to terminate these fibers, over400 of them, manually with loctite and 3 grades of grit paper and a blade to nick the glass. u can imagine the number of times these glass shard pricked my fingers. the 2 field engineers i worked with in that project, both had eye cataracts and they warned me never to look down straight into these fibers. when in operation, those lights are invisible but on the long run, the damage has already been done. one trick i use is to grab my phone, switch on my camera and use that to see if there is connectivity. much safer than using the eye, unless youre very sure the other end is not LIVE. part of my toolkit at that time was an optical microscope that i use to manually verify the end bits are clean and free from dust i used the same camera phone trick to verify a cable is not LIVE before sticking one of these into the microscope and into my eye.
