@louisrobitaille581011 күн бұрын
If it's already entered the atmosphere, it's too late. Those rocks move at many kilometers PER second. Like the Chicxulub asteroid (dinosaur one) was estimated at 20km/s. The ISS orbits at 400 km above the ground. That's 20 seconds away for an asteroid like that... If we detected an asteroid at the distance of the moon, we'd have a little over 5h to evacuate people. The biggest problem is the asteroids in the direction of the Sun. Its brightness stops us from detecting anything coming from that direction.

I thought only objects in the asteroid belt are called asteroids, anything in earth’s vicinity a meteoroid, a meteor if it enters the atmosphere, and a meteorite if it hits earth’s surface. There’s comets too, but idk if their name changes w/proximity to earth.
@fulalbatross15 күн бұрын
The asteroid belt is just the outer limit for when they're called asteroids, they may very well orbit closer to the Sun as well. Comets originates from the Kuyper Belt and the Oort Cloud, and are generally icy - hence the tail they form when getting closer to the Sun. Distance to Earth doesn't matter. And of course we've discovered asteroids/comets that don't fit neatly within these definitions, but they're very few so far.
@______IV15 күн бұрын
@@fulalbatross : I agree with all that. Sorry if my wording was sloppy. The issue I had was the fact that the video’s creator said something about an asteroid impacting earth. I thought it’s name changed according to proximity to earth like I explained in my last comment. I’m not picking this hill to die on or anything, bc the uses for words do change over time. I was just unaware of those changes if they happened.

@@______IV Ah, well my apologies as well, looks like I was a little sloppy in reading it too. But meteoroids isn't about vicinity, it's just size of the object. Less than a meter is a meteoroid. (And the smallest ones are micrometeoroids).
