I'm pretty sure the SADX Sonic render is ripped straight from the opening cutscene. And then Chaos has no reason to be there, you could feasibly see *some* of the background if he got cut out.

In fact, the half hedgehog half werehog is because originally the cover for Unleashed was gonna be holographic, cicling between the full version of both renders, but they scrapped it.

It all started here and for that reason alone it has a special place in my heart. Also, that pose is the same one that he does after you jump and stand still etc. His action pose for the game I guess. It would go on to become the main pose in a ton of episodes and promotional material for Sonic X as well. At least that's what I always thought that pose was inspired by.

The Sonic Adventure DX boxart is so bad that it kept me from getting both SA1 and SA2 for my GameCube as a kid. I was kinda freaked out by Sonic on that cover and I didn’t know what to make of Chaos. In the end it worked out though because I later got a Dreamcast and played SA1 & 2 on there which is the superior option.
