This novelty song "Who Put The Bomp" is one of the few songs Barry Mann recorded, as he concentrated more on songwriting. He & his wife Cynthia Weil are part of a successful songwriting team. He has written or co-written 53 hits in the UK & 98 in the US. So many of the songs were huge hits for many famous artists.

THIS WAS MY CHILDHOOD!! I’m only 40 yrs old, but growing up in my house my parents always had “ oldies “ playing in our house from sunrise to sunset! This reminds me of summer days and me and my 2 sisters either outside roller skating in our driveway or taking off for an adventure on our beach cruisers!!! Ugh… LOVE THIS SO MUCH! Thank you for the amazing REACTION!!! Ya’ll have my hearts!!! 💜💜💜✨✨✨👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼🤩🤩🤩💫💫💫🛼🛼🛼🛹🛹🛹🏄🏽♀️🏄🏽♀️🏄🏽♀️🚲🚲🚲

A friend used this song as a cautionary tale for her kids, who wanted to listen to songs with trashy lyrics. She recited it to them and said, "See? I remember all the lyrics, forty years later. What lyrics are still going to be in your minds forty years from now? Be careful what you listen to." I still remember all the words to the chorus, because it's a catchy, fun, delightful song! What a joy to see your reaction. :)

Barry Mann was known as a songwriter more than a singer, & along with his wife, Cynthia Weil, wrote many, many hits of the 60s. One of their most poignant, yet lesser known, songs is My Dad. Originally recorded by Paul Petersen, a teenage actor on the early 60s TV sitcom, The Donna Reed Show, the song was introduced on the show when his character sang it, & it became a minor hit. Another version was recorded by Davy Jones, as part of an album he recorded a few years before being cast in his star-making role as one of The Monkees. Lots of truly great songs by Mann & Weil, but My Dad has always been my sentimental favorite. ❤ One of the most perfect songs to react to on Father's Day. 🙂

Barry Mann is (yes, still alive, age 83) a songwriter, primarily. And, with his wife, Cynthia Weil, wrote some of the most iconic songs in the American songbook. When this song came out, many pop songs were done by vocal groups. It was the Doo-Wop revival of the early 60's. Many, many Doo-Wop songs used 'nonsense syllables' as a staple of the sound of the 50's and early 60's. This sound was so pervasive that some wrote reaction songs about it. This is one of the most popular. Another huge hit that touched on the subject was "Papa-Oom-Mow-Mow" by the Rivingtons.

Barry Mann and his songwriting partner Cynthia Weil penned a ton of hit songs in the 1960s, including some of the Righteous Brothers biggest hits, "You've Lost that Lovin' Feelin'," "Just Once In My Life," and "(You're My) Soul and Inspiration." They were also responsible for "Hungry" and "Kicks" by Paul Revere and the Raiders. They wrote "I Just Can't Help Believing" by B. J. Thomas. And they wrote the incredible song "Don't Know Much," made famous by Aaron Neville and Linda Ronstadt (if you haven't heard that one, drop everything you're doing and go listen right now). They wrote "Magic Town" by the Vogues, and "Just Once" by James Ingram. They wrote "Blame It On the Bossa Nova" by Eydie Gormé. They wrote "Running with the Night" by Lionel Richie, and "We Gotta Get Out of this Place" by The Animals. They wrote the classic "On Broadway" by The Drifters and later recorded by George Benson. They wrote "Only in America" by Jay and the Americans, and "Somewhere Out There" by Linda Ronstadt and James Ingram. In short, Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil were two of the most prolific and successful songwriters in pop music history. This song was one of Barry Mann's first to hit the charts.

Great song, great reaction. For a sweet and poignant song about these kind of lyrics you might want to listen to the late Jesse Winchester’s song Sham-A-Ling-Dong-Ding. He performed it live in his later years on Elvis Costello’s show Spectacle, and there was not a dry eye in the house. I think you’ll love it. It’s on KZbin.

This is the most ironically self-referential song ever til George Jones recorded "Who's Gonna Fill Their Shoes." Barry (and his talented wife and partner Cynthia Weil) put the Bomp in some of the greatest songs of the 20th Century, including the most played song of that period. There are legions of men who should be thanking Barry and Cynthia for "making their babies fall in love with them." You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin;" "I Don't Know Much;" "Soul and Inspiration; the list goes on and on.
