There are several reasons to do it this way. One reason, cold air goes down like hot air rises. Another reason is to not have the cold air blowing in the face of anybody. Also, it is easier to disperse the air over a larger area from a higher point.

In US, the refrigerator is the larger bottom unit while the smaller colder unit on top is called freezer. I also haven't heard "ref" used but "fridge" is common.

Why do you have to have the extractor unit of the AC on the wall and create such a bloody mess by cutting such a large hole. I recently moved to a new apartment and had one fitted in the bedroom. All it required was a small circular hole for the pipe which then went to the extractor unit outside on the balcony or in your case in the yard (stands on the floor). A different kind of unit but inexpensive. Anyway, I can't believe you are moving again Markitos! . Donkey alert! Just kidding. Enjoyed the Madonna, I guess you don't care about a major copyright claim on this one. Lovely to see the kids and family having fun and so cute how Oopah calls you Daddy too. I can add two other countries / areas I've lived to the list of time keeping being more than fluid, Spain and the Caribbean. Thanks for sharing!
