We can recommend this air hammer for light work: amzn.to/2OJMCDx We realize this isn't a "dyno" since nothing is spinning, but we like the word :) Brands advertise things like "more powerful" "powerful blows" and all types of nonsense on these tools, but we have no idea HOW powerful any of them are, and as it turns out neither do they! Let's try, because even trying and failing is more info than any of these brands can provide it seems.

We're working on two more testing rigs now and in the coming months. We still love impact wrenches, and you'll always find the latest and greatest of those here. But we hope you guys will also support our efforts to bring some marketing honesty to more mechanic's type tools now (with air hammers) and in the future. Appreciate each and every one of you who watch. - Torque Edit: We can do cordless SDS rotary/hammer drills & small breakers as well to measure their impacting power if you guys want. Let us know.

Thank you TONS! I was just thinking about this the other day. I'd love to see an Atlas Copcop RRH12P on there and I'm fairly interested in sending you my Jiffy #600 hammer. As I'm sure you've discovered by now, the best air hammers are actually air rivet guns which are rated by size of rivet they can set which is also a fairly quantifiable and consistent way to measure gun power. That may be an option for testing an air hammer as well.

I’m very interested in this. At work we buy about 30 of the Chicago pneumatic CP717 model air hammers for oil rig work. We use them to drive wedge pins into cable securing clamps, when the clamps and pins are new sometimes it takes 10-15 seconds to drive each pin in due to the pin wedge design and tolerance. There are roughly 600 pins a job, and we do this 7 days a week so these hammers get a good workout. If there was a less expensive comparable power or more powerful model that would be interesting to know. Time is money when you are on a oil rig. We’ve used cheaper air hammers and sometimes it will not even drive the pin in due to lack of power even with the regulator cranked all the way up to 125 psi max pressure. It would be interesting to see also if there is a significant gain to raising the air pressure to a safe level from a minimum level.

i had to explain to a coworker who got himself a VERY strong Air hammer for an air chisel , you want control ability first then power second for what we do, if you cant control the tool that power means nothing and will tend to cause damage to things we work on we cut alot of rivets on trailers with air hammers, so having somthing too powerful is actually bad

You could simply weld a round piece of tubing on the end of the wedge to keep the head from bouncing off. The weld wouldn’t have to be too strong either since the pressure isn’t directly on the tubing.

I’m a little late to the party here but while you consider everything, check out the rivet gun scene. Several aircraft tool websites have the standard written down in a chart which sizes the guns from 1X up to 9X. The later sizes so big they deserve planetary status! South main auto has Big Nasty which should just be a standard 5x rivet gun. This is a better platform because of the trigger feathering you can do and generally they have a heavier piston moving around inside. It’s not any revolutionary information but your viewers might find it useful to know something about a relatively unknown side of the market.

For the test rig, you need a machine shop to make you a set of custom wedges. For the outside two that are L__ shaped, with one long leg at the top, the other at the bottom, Then stops at the ends so the outer feather wedges have support and the middle wedge is held so it travels straight, and cannot randomly move or fly out.

You know what you may want to do, would be to get yourself some PVC pipe that the chuck of the tool can slide into. By doing that, you still aren't directly welded onto the shank, but it will help prevent the tool vibrating itself right off the wedge. By taking that variable out, the only thing you would need to do is put some weight into the tool and pull the trigger. Just a thought I had...
@Pentross
@Pentross 3 жыл бұрын
I think you really do need to make a tool alignment rail with a constant forward pressure (possibly put the whole system vertical and add a weight on top of the hammer holder) Holding the tool manually is a significant amount of information, and I definitely agree it's the most useful; but 1. There's a lot of cases where the operator has an easy time aligning it no matter how bouncy the hammer is 2. Even if you actually tried and it works the same for everyone, most shops don't have someone from your crew so it's not a rig someone can **confidently** set up expecting the same result 3. To test 20 tools in a row without your arms getting tired, even if it doesn't effect the result

in the aircraft industry this is a daily tool, (can be 12 hours a day 6 days a week on the big jobs). We structural A.M.E's are usually have a selection of guns available to us from "1X" to "10X" is normal. A "4X" rivet gun is usually the every job tool but I've seen people hold onto their weak "3X" or heavy duty "5X" because thats what they are used to. "1X" or blart guns are more for confined space access. Common brands are US-ATCO, Ingersol Rand, Chicago Pneumatic, and others. If you want the best air tools then you only need Atlas copco as you can pass them on to your grand kids.

Can you test out some different rivet guns. The yard store is a good place to get surplus ones. Not all the time but often I use a rivet gun all day on solid aluminum rivets in a B767 or recently a B757. Also the supply line makes a big difference, going from a 3/8 to a 3/4 on a 7x rivet gun makes a huge difference. Also if you’ve never used a rivet gun, it’s basically an air hammer that usually hits with more force per blow but less blow per minute then a standard air hammer. Making them much easier to control.

Absolutely amazing content. I've watched all of them and hope to see the channel grow. I know I've asked before on Project Farm's channel, but I would LOVE to see torque wrench testing in various sizes from 1/4 in drive to 1/2 in drive. Especially showing accuracy out of the box, accuracy with use (say 100 tightenings?!), and a comparison of any degradation against high dollar wrenches. It would also fit with your channel name!

I would weld a piece of pipe on the end of the wedge. It would keep the hammer from slipping off but still allow for the free movement of the hammer.

two things i noticed Your screws are hopefully secured in some way that they do not loosen. and maybe it would be a good idea to integrate an electrical valve with a time relay to reduce errors and so that you can concentrate better on your task.

Awesome job with the rig, please test the harbor frieght short and medium barrel air hammers as they are only 10 to 15 dollars, they have a 5 dollar chuck attachment as well you could test with em. For someone who only needs occasional airhammer use these are amazing at their price points. I'd really like to see how they hold up. I'd love to see their big Chief long barrel and how it stacks up compared to snap-on and match and such. It'd 150 dollars which is about a 3rd or 4th of other professional high-end long barrel air hammers. The airhammer is one of my favorite tools, I think it's amazing you guys made this rig and are going to do some comparisons. God bless

I'd like to see the CP7150 Tested. It hits pretty hard and is a very reasonable price(about $66). The only downside is that the trigger is pretty much On/Off. I added a heavier spring to the trigger valve on mine and with a few tweaks of spring length it's a lot more controllable instead of full send all the time.

I actually use that air hammer at my shop, it works decently but the snap on air hammer the my co worker has puts mine to shame. It’s obviously a lot more expensive but the results speak for themselves in my opinion, would love to see it tested with the numbers!

I think IR has some of the best triggers on their air tools. So easy to vary speed/power. My Cornwell guns are probably the worse, on or off

Great work. Not sure if the hammer should rest on something, I know you said you wanted to reveal bouncy hammers but you also need to mitigate operator influence particularly as that's going to get tiring for the operators running lots of tests.

Seems like if it was possible, it would be nice to have a test with the wedge fixed to the bit and one without. In some situations, control is more important than others. I think a good preheat then tig with 309l and a slow cool would give it a decent chance to not break but it's hard to say for sure. If the wedge is thick enough you could dill a pocket for the bit to set in which would allow it to be held on target without changing the mass of the bit.

Drilling a hole at the end of the wedge and cutting the chisel off of the attachment to create sort of a "socket" to keep the tool from bouncing off the sides may provide more consistent numbers 🤷 Also how would your body weight affect those numbers? Great show!

May consider adding a piece of pvc pipe cut in half to act as a directional alignment guide. Attach it to the wall or backing plate? This way it isn't welded to the high carbon wedge, and adds accuracy.

Excellent marks for the effort put forth to create a rig like this. I have thoughts about the strength of SDS hammer drills when used in hammer only function. Specifically with cordless models. I use them for my HVAC job in various capacities such as drilling holes for concrete anchors , but i also use the same tool with a special bit in "hammer only mode" to drive the pin in the center of the anchor. I got to thinking if these hammer drills are powerful enough to do the job of an air hammer for anyone who doesnt want to invest in air (me) when i can do everything automotive with my cordless tool line. In short, would you be able to use the same rig to test if these have enough power to even be in the same ball park as air hammers? Or maybe even have a chart just showing SDS hammer drill ratings. Thanks for making killer content! Keep up the good work!

Great idea! My only suggestion for a slight improvement to the rig is to cut a channel into the metal wedge allowing a chisel bit to be used also in the future. I swear different bits give much different perfomance!

Electronic pressure pads ran for 10 seconds with a live data feed and get the average. Or what y'all ran either way it'll give you good numbers. I would recommend you guys do three tests though as you aren't giving max power. Max power would be the most pressure the tool can apply at the end of working. So y'all should do the minimum, your 5 second run, and until fatigue (or in other words what's the most pressure the airgun can leave the wedge at before the pressure stops climbing)

I would actually love to see you take some hammer drills and try those out... I'm impartial to dewalt because that's the system my company offers. But I love my sds and I just turn it to hammer only and throw a chisel bit in there and I go to town trying to find floor boxes or whatever I might need to use it for as a commercial elechicken

What about doing like a fuel pump or electrical connector where there are teeth on the nut. Using said nut a "sparky" uses a hammer)/lineman pliers to drive a screwdriver on the teeth to apply a torque to set the nut. You could measure said torque on your Dyno skid for impacts.
