For quite some time, something like this has been my dream bike, but for one reason or another I've always written it off as a bit of a silly dream. But recently I realized that pre-pandemic, it felt like I wasn't ever chasing many dreams and was too self-conscious of fitting in to break the mold. There's just something about the classic scooter body that's timeless and ever-appealing to me. I just remember scooters being depicted as the "first-step to freedom" in shows as a kid, and even in one of the Grand Theft Auto games I played (when I was too young for it in the early 00's), a scooter's one of the first vehicles you can drive and explore what once felt like the largest open world, so maybe that's where it started for me. Definitely post more videos on this, it's interesting content, and I need more things to help hold onto this enthusiasm, since I plan on signing up for driving courses in the spring because it's getting too cold now for that.

Very cool project. I restored a Sebring vanguard citicar a number of years ago, all electric with modern motor controls in it. I'm a licensed electrician in CT. Such a cool project! Vespa has always been high on my list of vehicles I'd like to own someday. Doing an electrical conversion just makes it even more fun. My first scooter was electric, don't even know what the make/model was. It only had a range of 3-4 miles, so when I rode it to work, I had to charge it to get it back home. I replaced that with a 2000 Yamaha Zuma, which was super fun to ride, but a few years later, when I bought my 1990 Miata, the scooter had to go. Watching you work on this scooter with the fine folks at Spark, it makes me want to get et back into the scooter business. I'm thinking something with an open frame like a Honda Ruckus would make for a great conversion base. Then maybe I'll join the club because, oh look, squirrel! Thanks once again for the inspiration!

As a former welder, I can tell you that it is extremely important to always wear protective eye wear when using a welding machine. It will save your eyes from the destruction the light can cause. As for the weld its self. If you want a strong weld, it's best to tack the corners, and a few spots a few inches in-between, then layer a solid weld of a bead over the entire piece. I was taught to start an arc from the piece you're welding to, then move from top to bottom in a C-shape until the piece is welded together. Never sit for more than one second in the same spot as you can cause a hole to form. So be as fast as you can. And if you need more help, look for some welding videos on KZbin. Great work on the Vespa, Tim. Would love to see more videos outside of your musical instruments like you used to make.

That is definitely one sweet ride! And I definitely wouldn't miss that gas-mix smell. I hope you're also going to LED those lights while you're at it. While I really love the amber glow of the old bulbs, when it comes to light output and low battery drain, the modern stuff really can't be beat. And BTW, you're going to need an inline resistor if you're going the LED route.

Everywhere is different, for sure. You could register it like any old Vespa I'm sure. It is no faster or more/less safe than a gas aspirated Vespa

@@michaelb.42112 they've become trendy recently and some guys are importing them in bulk. In Japan, it's a class of car for non highway use that's affordable and popular. In the US, if the vehicle is older than 25 years it can sneak through most (all?) states registration process and not be required to pass emissions or safety requirements. You just need the right paperwork from the dealer and state vin inspection. I drive mine every day and it's great,. but I don't go on the highway with it. It's not designed for that. keep it under 50 mph

Thanks for being upfront about your sour experiences, most KZbinrs shy away from getting into dark waters like that (though you're in the absolute right to speak out your experience!). As you might imagine, these old scooters are a whole lot easier to snag around here in Europe and while I still have to look into the current legislation, I'm pretty positive I don't have to worry about homologation or registration around here in Portugal when it comes to electric bikes up until a certain power. I'll definitely ponder this as a future wishlist project, thanks for sharing and enjoy it!

On this build I used a 3000 watt hub motor, Sabvoton 72v 80 amp controller and a 72v battery. I don't have the exact parts links/receipts as Spark did the ordering. If you bug those guys they might have actual web links. You'll also need a 72-12v stepdown for lights and stuff and some jury rigging to fit a throttle, brakes, etc.

I've been waiting to see the video on this project. I'm not much of a fossil-fuel guy, but I really liked the idea that you were going to turn this old Vespa into an e-Vespa. I also follow Elm City Vintage Dave and really like the stuff he gets up to. I definitely would like to see more content along these lines. I think the e-assist tie-in fits very well with your green aesthetic and if you can solar charge the battery that's even better! I liked the videos you did on the e-trike from a few years back and was hoping you'd do some more content along those lines. I think this fits. I also like that you kept the patina on the Vespa.

I almost wonder if retrofitting a 60 year old scooter kit would be profitable, since there probably aren't many old Vespa scooters left that would be viable candidates for retrofitting, however, it would be great to make a version of the retrofitted prototype from scratch, that resembles a classic Vespa scooter, but better designed to hold a battery, and all the electrical components, while still having those classic Vespa body lines from scratch...Possibly a battery pack under the floorboards, along with the battery pack under the seat for additional range and power, and maybe regenerative braking, etc. Maybe an on-board charger, so the scooter could be charged with a simple 120V extension cord, or somehow add the option of using readily available electric car chargers for a quick charge at the grocery store/super center.

There are Chinese electric scooters available in the US already that are basically "modern Vespas." The Javelin Spark is working on is a "scooter" not a moped, but with a more motorcycle like body that will be made in the USA (of course the electronics still coming from overseas. Baby steps). Indeed there's a place for all these ideas. Me? As a reclaimer/trashpicker and with my personal aesthetic, I like starting with old and retrofitting it as new, so I'm starting here! I def. want to do more. This is as addicting as making guitars! Oh, and my charger is small, works off a 120v outlet and I keep it in the storage compartment of the Vespa already. What would be nice is if I could easily remove the battery and take it inside with me, like the Javelin prototype: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pIGwo5d5eLOhZsk

@@timsway I appreciate the retrofitting of the classic Vespa scooter that was probably beyond repair to get it to operate as originally designed. (The old motor was seized, and wouldblikely be too costly to return to original operation), but I think that building a scooter with similar design lines would be more marketable than a kit to retrofit a 50-60 year old scooter frame, and there likely aren't many old Vespas laying around that aren't already restored to ICE operation, or rusted out and structurally compromised, or haven't already been recycled. Vespa scooters were much more popular overseas, and I believe there are companies making cheap copies of the entire Vespa ICE drivetrain. I think the cool factor of the Vespa design lines would be a major selling point for a newly manufactured electric scooter design that could be easily modified to better use the available space for the requirements of an electric drive train. I think battery packs (removable) could be integrated into components like the floorboards, or under the seat to better utilize the available space for ultimately additional power and range. I don't know if having a removable battery pack would be as advantageous for the end user, since I doubt many people would be removing their battery pack to charge it on their kitchen table overnight, and more likely, the battery could be left in the scooter, and charged in a garage, or while parked next to the house/apartment, since the scooter would likely be used for an inner-city commute, or for running errands where owning an automobile might not be practical.

@@GaryOshust I don't know the brand off the top of my head but its 3000 watts brushless. we're using a really nice MQCON controller that we can micromanage details. right now I'm limiting it at 52 amps, but it should be able to handle up to 55 or 60. Since this is a prototype, we've ordered a backup motor in case we blow this one and we're slowly pushing it more.

@@timsway I'm running a Kelly KLS-H 8430 for the controller 84v nominal, 100A continuous and 300A max. It's interface for programming isn't that sexy, but it does get the job done. I'll have to look this weekend as to what I dialed it back to as I don't remember off hand. Based on what you are seeing on your bike I'd bump up to a controller in the 70-80A continuous range and maybe look at a 5000w hub to get to the performance you are looking for.

@@GaryOshust right. I'm 72v (but the battery is really 84) and the controler is 150 max, which is pretty perfect for the size and weight of the vehicle (until you hit a big hill). I think even if I can get this rig up to 60 amps I'll be able to cruise uphill at 25, right now it's more like 20. This is the prototype so we're trying to weigh cost/efficiency and legality of keeping it in the "49cc" range without raising too many eyebrows. Another 1000 watts or so would be welcome, but not "neccesary"

I like ideas like this. I just wish big car companies would do the same for cars. Instead of making new, ugly teslas, start creating ev kits to retrofit all the cars we love. Save cars instead of creating more. I know a few small custom shops do it, but why hasn't conversion kits become a large scale idea yet? I know, not completely on topic to this, but just something on my mind. Imagine a quality drop in ev kit for a classic muscle car body or something. Battery tech is probably holding progress back though. EV batteries are large and heavy.

Tim go to your bank and tell them what happened, often they will retrieve your money. I've had to do the same three or four times over the past 5 years and each time I got my money back. If you used a credit card, they'll also get your money back! My commute to work is very hilly. It definitely slows way down on the hills. But then again, so does my truck :) This is part of the "real world R&D" we are doing prior to building the kit.

That's a real problem, when people are riding ebikes at 100,000 mph down trials specifically designed for "non motorized vehicles). Anyone who uses these trails has certainly seen the painful repercussions.

Good job lads! I convert all my Scooters. Been doing it for 20 years now. ONly last ten have been worthwhile though. My latest is a 1961 V5T Vespa, switched from 8 to 10 inch tyres, 72 volt Lingbo Controller like 300 CDN dollars, 5kw hub wheel motor from QS Motor 250 CDN dollars 130 ah Lithium Titrate speed charge Battery 2100 CDN dollars equals-top speed of 180 kph, 0-60 kph in 1,2 seconds, 420 nm of torque, 45% climb angle (hills not issue) range real world of 610 km's per charge. Same as my 1964 Lambretta GT conversion that is my daily driver. SMeet are pretty good, Retrospective UK is the best in the world currently for the price. I prefer to build my own kit which I do and it is not even half the cost and mine are far better, faster, more reliable, easier to maintain and far more price to use relative. The main thing you need is a swing arm for the rear hub motor. after that it is pretty easy. I have been buying used crappy Indian built imitation Lambretta and Vespa Motors from India as they are like 40 USD empty with no gears or cylinder etc. I reuse the original crank and guts with a simply 72v 5kw BLDC motor in place of the crank and chain drive it to the original Wheel minus the original gears.
