Each subsequent Vipassana gets easier, which is proof that the pain is connected to energy within the body. That energy is part of traumas, habits, things you're holding on to and connections to negative experiences and people. The key to the technique is constantly letting go and surrendering while watching with equanimity. Over time the heavy pains are released and subtler more sublime energy flows appear and you begin to feel lighter and freer.

As a vipasssana, old student who has been practicing for 25 years, sitting 10-day and long courses, serving on courses and as a member of the management team and on a center trust its great to hear your discussion about your course experiences. Some of us old students get together on Sunday mornings at 10am on KZbin on a program called "The Servers Table". It's a podcast format but the concept is that we are continuing the conversations that happen every day in the servers dinning rooms all over the world. I can't imagine a more diverse and interesting group of people than the members of the vipassana community. Each center is a stand-alone trust run and funded by old students who volunteer their time and money to start and run these centers world-wide. Geonka taught his first course in India in 1969 and now there are two hundred centers. It is he purest form of democracy that I have ever encountered and it continues to grow.

As a lifetime Buddhist practitioner, I recommend this 10-day Vipassana meditation just like you guys. I also attended the retreat a long time ago and I am a proponent for everyone to at least try it out. However, I would like to make one correction. Vipassana meditation practice (there are various forms, and Goenka's is one of them) is not the original meditation from the Buddha. The original teaching includes Samatha Vipassana. Samatha is the practice of cultivating the mind (using Anapanasati) to complete serenity (complete peace or no-mind) so we can gain Vipassana (Insight) into Reality (Impermanence and Non-Self). I just wanted to ensure people are informed with the correct information on Buddha-Dharma. Thanks for sharing the insights you gained from the retreat.

thanks for sharing!
@noself-onlykarmaАй бұрын
@@kizryuver it's difficult to explain in detail in this comment but I do want to share that many practices have been developed since the Buddha's time for Awakening (Liberation). As the Buddha-Dharma and its practices moved over to western countries, the dilution was inevitable since many teachers wanted to expose the Dharma to many and provided diluted versions to help westerners take their first steps into Buddhism. Many enter the popular Mindfulness Meditation for stress relief but I hope people will go in deeper to understand that foundational knowledge and practices so they can go deeper, which will lead people out of suffering. The fundamental teachings of Buddha must be understood correctly to build Right View/Understanding, which then creates Right Intention for the practice. Too many nowadays are practicing for the sake of practicing and it's only wasting their time and sometimes leading people to dark side of meditation. We must at least understand following - 1) Three Marks of Existence (Impermanence, Non-Self, Suffering) 2) Four Noble Truths , 3) Dependent Origination. Then one can develop Right Intention and apply appropriate practices to cultivate their minds and let go all afflictions for liberation.
@noself-onlykarmaАй бұрын
To add, the current version of Vipassana practice is very helpful in realizing Anicca, Impermanence of our body and mind - IF you practice it correctly. That is a big step towards ultimate liberation. One must not only understand Impermanence but have 'penetrating' insights into the Impermanence nature of all that exists. That help one to also understand the non-self and interdependent arising of all that is, which can be termed as "emptiness". Once you have penetrating insights into Emptines then you would no longer have to suffer since you would understand everything is in existence of karmic dependence of everything else. The most direct method of practice is Zen Inquiry of "What is this (I-ness)?" which cuts through the illusory of individuality (Ignorance). But for this direct path one needs a teacher who can guide them through all the traps of the mind. In fact, everyone meditating should be under close guidance of a teacher who has been through ups and downs of meditation.

I've done six Vipassana retreats, three in Kelseyville, CA, and three retreats at the North Fork center in the Sierra Nevada. At the time, I was teaching in a year round school, and the schedule was perfect for having the time to go. My last course was 15 years ago. I'm now retired, and want to go back again. I'm now living in NY State, and there's a center up in Ontario, Canada I'm thinking of going to. I learned so much about myself and my mind - and my relationship with pain. I will always be grateful for those experiences, and hope to go back again. Thanks for going and reporting on this most remarkable human experience! Yeah, it's physically painful at times, but the ability to gain understanding over our brain/body connection is invaluable!

Goenka ji was there in person. I was the youngest participant, and he even mentioned it during his lecture. Since then, I’ve completed almost 7 courses and practiced at home. In my experience, one 10-day course is not enough to achieve true liberation and freedom from suffering. I believe that at least one long course-like the 90-day program-is essential for deeper progress on this path.

He has many great videos on KZbin, mostly of his retreats wherein he answers deep spiritual questions in very clear and profoundly illuminating as well as entertaining ways. He's such a truly kind, dear man, and such an inspiration and pleasure to watch and listen to. He guides the attendees in meditation, I believe it is Vipassana. But I can't do such meditation, I'm far too traumatized for that, with my CPTSD and ADHD. I meditate in solitude and silence, lying down, in comfort, warmth. The Wikipedia info for dark retreat is illuminating and has a link to bön (religion). That entry includes the following, which I find very illuminating: "...bön nature, an all-pervasive reality that is only perceived by those who have eliminated adventitious mental afflictions and actualized the luminous potentiality of mind. Those who attain awakening transform themselves into variegated light in the form of the rainbow body, after which their physical forms dissolve, leaving nothing behind. Both cyclic existence and nirvana are mind, the only difference being that those who have attained nirvana have eliminated illusory afflictions, and so their cognitive streams are manifested as clear light, while beings caught up in cyclic existence fail to recognize the luminous nature of mind and so are plagued by its illusory creations."

I've had a meditation practice for decades and do not recommend Vipassana meditation retreat for anyone who has not meditated before as there are very real dangers. Most centers do warn people that if they've not meditated before that people have actually suffered psychotic breaks because they did this and had no preparation. It's best to work up to a ten day retreat. Start meditating daily, continue with meditations which are longer than a few minutes then try a short retreat like the whole day. Then after a time, try another that's a weekend or a few days and work your way up. Vipassana is not a beginner type of retreat. I'm impressed that you both did this and you've come away with some advanced realizations. New subscriber!

This is awesome, but I also feel a little bit duped. 10 hours a day is not 100 hours straight. I would be far more impressed if you did 1 24 hour session than 10 at 10 hours a day. So therefore I respectfully issue this challenge; if you do a single 24 hour session, I will do it with you. Then you can do a separate podcast comparing the 10/10 vs the 1/24. I think that's a comparison your audience would love to hear about 😉🙏🏼✌🏼

@ThreatofParadiseАй бұрын
@@brianlittrell797 I've done full day sits in the past, but a) that was a very long time ago and b) I don't think I've ever done a straight 24 without breaks. I'm as curious to know if I could do it as anyone. I rarely sit for more than an hour these days and even that long is slightly unusual. Also, I never had a meditation teacher or anything so I really liked how this teacher broke the sessions into phases. This video truly inspired me. After watching, I cleared my whole day for tomorrow to see if I can even get close. I'm going to film it and put it on one of my channels (probably not the one I'm responding from because it's for music). I'll post a link later ✌🏼😊

Siddharth Gautam was not unhappy but happiest man untill one day he saw the world outside his palace. A sage had predicted that the king's son would become a big spiritual yogi and leave his familyand all belongings one day. Fearing, since his birth the king ensured that Siddharth doesnt get chance to see/feel any misery pain sadness...he went as far as putting sexy girls around and all sorts of pleasure to him. He was concealed from the process of aging and how old age comes with what kind of pains...Just one day when by mistake his driver took hijm outside the castle on Siddhartha persuasion. There for the first time he saw reality of life and was broken to the core..that day he just took a extreme concept that "Life is Dukka (Sorrow)"...and this runs in the teaching of buddhism as the main truth.

“I am the awareness behind the crazy hurricane of thoughts going in the mind.” This is the center point of all Hindu philosophies, especially Vedanta. Next step is to control the mind which is in the clutches of Raga and Dwesha ( desires and hatreds). Once those are controlled you realise the pure consciousness, your true self.

Once I made the decision to practice daily, and not just at an appointed time, meaning the entire day, regardless of what I was actually doing, that's when I really grew, internally. I say this with all due respect, for me personally, the Yogic Science combined with the Buddha's Noble Eightfold path, have made me a better Christian! Hi guys, I have been practicing Vipassana on and off for the last 2 years, 30 minutes a day. I wonder how you deal with back pain? I would also like to know if there is a website where you can find the nearest Vipassana center. That's all, I just want to congratulate you for the video, excellent explanation and very inspiring!
@TheFioBrosАй бұрын
What's up Sebastian! Appreciate the kind words and you taking the time to watch / listen :) Good stuff with the meditation practice! It's funny that you mention back pain, we're about to interview a back pain prevention specialist on the podcast in just a few weeks, so stay tuned for that for sure. But for a more immediate solution, one thing that really helped us was sitting on a meditation cushion called a Zafu. You can find them online on Amazon. It's just a circular cushion that makes it a little easier to sit for longer periods of time. In terms of where you can find the nearest Vipassana center, you can use their website: www.dhamma.org/en/locations/directory LMK if you have any more questions! And thanks for the sub!
@roysunrohitАй бұрын
You are just not sitting correctly straight erect like a cobra who suspends his entire body on his lower tail. you need to forget you have body. That comes after several minutes of painful sitting and when breath becomes noticeable. tummy breathing you start with which goes away gradually and gets focused just on the point of meditation. Also avoid lotus position, if it is painful, try siddhasana instead locking your pelvic region. Lotus position doesnt give firmness and erect suspension as siddhasana, to many. From hath yoga, otherwise, choose the posture which suits you best and same time ensures erect cobra like suspended body.

it’s hilarious how you find Buddha’s journey to enlightenment so amusing when sitting through even three minimal days of Vipassana seems like a Herculean task for you. The level of dedication Gautama displayed it is to be revered upon .. Funny how you even feel qualified to talk about him, let alone make fun of him. (And no, I’m not a follower of Buddha or any religion, but I do find your attitude quite funny-not in a humorous way, though.) And its funny how you find your teacher’s accent funny. Ever stopped to think how your own accent might sound downright hilarious to others? Your mouth is simply trained to pronounce words in a certain way, and yet you’ve somehow convinced yourself that your way is the correct way. That, my friend, is genuinely funny to me. Maybe it’s time to sign up for a few more Vipassana sessions-not just to survive them but to gain a little clarity. Who knows, you might actually understand what you’re saying one day! :) (Oh, this one’s for the guy in the black T-shirt-whatever your name is. The other guy, at least, seems to show a bit more gratitude for the free wealth of knowledge you wanted that Goranka so generously shared.)

@lovelysakariah1134Ай бұрын
I wasn't trying to be lovely (the adjective, not my name :) ), and yes, I am judging him-judging his mockery and ungrateful attitude, no doubt. Just like he finds things funny about Buddha or his vipasanna teachers accent, I find it funny how some people beg to learn for free from spiritual masters who’ve devoted years of dedication and commitment to gain that knowledge and share it generously, only to be mocked-no matter the degree. If you can dish out judgment, be ready to take it too.:) And just to clarify, my earlier comment was directed solely at the owner of this video-the guy in the black T-shirt-and not as an invitation for conversation. He’s a grown man with a mind of his own-he can take it as an instigator to improve his clarity or dismiss it entirely. Either way, it makes no difference to me. :)
