this reminds me a bit of last weekend with my brothers. i have two brothers who play SoT (we really wish our 4th would play but he's got kids and no time), so we were lucky enough to have a day when all three of us were on at the same time. we started a gold hoarders vault mission.. which went great at first. we got all the map parts, collected a fair bit of treasure along the way from the 2 skeleton sloops and one skeleton galleon we ran across, lot of fun. so we got our key.. and the vault was located on an island that the ghost fleet event had spawned around. so we had to fight off the world event in a brig, in order to open our vault. half way through wave 2, we got attacked by another skeleton sloop which we also had to fight off. three different megalodons (based on the colors) spawned and harassed our ship any time we sailed out of range of the ghost fleet to repair and restock our storage crates on deck with more cannonballs. there was also a reaper that sailed in to try and attack us for our lv5 gold hoarder flag, which the ghost fleet sank. thankfully it was a kid solo slooping, so we struck up an alliance and he acted as an extra crewman, made it easier to finish off the event. he also helped us schlep the vault's contents to our ship, and once he got his ship back, we sent up the alliance flag formally, gave him his choice from the vault loot, and he got 1/2 of all the stuff we sold (which was about a third of a million gold for us, so the kid probably made out pretty good.) we spent so much time laughing over all the crazy stuff during that battle.

About that first "invincible" skeleton, the plants skellys regenerate in water. Edit: I KNOW SHIP HAPPENS. I ran into him literally the first day of captaincy update, he was a great guy.

Sadly, my whole experience in sea of thieves has been running into the brig crew over and over. Attack for no reason, call you trash no matter what, camp your boat until they sell everything. The only way to get away from them is to quit that server (which resets everything you had going on), only to run into yet another crew of the same in the new server. I can say that in over 3 years of owning the game, neither my friends nor I have been able to do any adventures including finishing any of the tall tales at all, only got as far as delivering the Shroudbreaker to the stranger because they would steal out Briggsy skull every time.

That sounds like very bad luck to me. As someone who has only been playing for about 2 months now, and hearing the horror stories of how aggressive this game used to be, I've found that it is very calm right now. Most people you run into would rather just go about doing their own thing than attack you with the occasional crew that just wants nothing but fite (even if there is nothing to gain from it) and they are usually brigs. The only times that PvP is almost guaranteed is for FoF and FotD. I hardly ever see anyone try to fight me over skeleton forts, ghost/skeleton fleets, Ashen Winds, or Veils. Just earlier today I was doing a terrible job at figuring out a Tall Tale which had me running around Old Faithful for around an hour and a half. Despite other player ships being nearby no one seemed interested in me at all. That said, most players also don't seem very open to making new friends either. When I'm about to head off for the night I often try to either find someone who I can give all my supplies to or someone who will attack me on sight so I can go out fighting. More often than not people just tell me they don't want my stuff then they leave or they run away, ignoring me despite my best efforts to talk to them :(

Our friendliest encounter was with a brig/sloop alliance parked behind some rocks and they opened up a full broad side on us as we were passing through while they dropped all sails a went in the opposite direction. Things were so bad that a two-ship alliance with 5 players ran scared gun blazing from a duo sloop that never fired a shot.
