Actually Nintendo didn't think Rob the robot was going to sell more than Mario they added him to the package so as to advertise the NES as a toy rather than a video game system. This was because Atari fucked the game industry over with slimy marketing and a shit ton of lame games destroying the market. Nobody wanted anything to do with video games when Nintendo entered the market so Rob was used to trick potential buyers into thinkin theywere buying a toy when in fact they were buying one of the most important gaming systems of all time that will never be matched because of the time and place.
