Very nice boat but it seems really strange to see you two in a cat. Good luck and we're looking forward to watching you experiment with your new boat.

Sounds like it was just a charter. I don't think they will be trading in Distant Shores anytime soon. I wonder if the slapping noise was amplified by the boat having so much exposed fiberglass? Most of the Cats I've seen featured on other youtube channels have a lot more wood veneer and trim which might help deaden the sounds. Maybe with ten people and supplies on board the boat simply road too low in the water; or it might be something I'll have to weight into my decision process if I ever get a boat....

I see they've done this before at least once and enjoyed the boat much more. Episode called "Chartering a Catamaran in the BVI" from Oct 21, 2016...

Love the video. But like many I disagree on the cons on Cats. I have sailed and raced all types of mono hulls from 24' racers to 110' 92 ton ketches. And seen lots of nasty weather. We chose a cat for the following reasons. Most cruising is off the wind and off the wind our cat is faster then an equal or greater length mono. It has more room for the length. I can say with hand on heart. That a beer can does not tip over on the table in 6ft seas down wind. And if your going cruising. You spend more time at anchor then sailing. This is where a cat is awesome. It does not roll anywhere as bad as a mono. And the hull slap is easy to get used to. Because we are normally there quicker. And it's an up wind issue not a down wind issue in our boat. We also have had no issue with space in the Med for our 21' wide Privledge as most new mono hums 50' and up are the same width as us. We are talking fat butt boats.🙂 But Paul is an experienced sailor and people will buy what they like and they should. But if I'm cruising I like a cat. If I'm racing I'll take a J109 or J120. Like everyone. This is just my two cents. Take it or leave it. We should all be happy however we sail.

We went to the BVI in 2014 and I was amazed at how many cats there are compared to monos in comparison to the Med. They are a lot more sociable with big spaces. Good video demonstrating the ease of sailing as well.

We sailed the same boat for 2 weeks last year our of Sopers Hole with Voyage Charters. That boat is very well appointed and has a luxurious feel when onboard. It was slower than I had hoped doing about half the true wind speed but the charter version is has a small sail plan and is already weighted down before you put your gear onboard. Onboard systems were also less than reliable, not too much of a problem in the BVI when the charter company gets to fix everything. I'd hate to own those problems myself. I'd call this a great charter boat for close passages. Comfortable and easy on the eyes. On the way to Anegada, everyone will be passing you by, which is more of a problem for some people (like me) than others.

thanks for the input, this shows basically that a sailboat has its compromises. Like an RV. Buy what for where you will use it, and whom you will use it with. I am willing to bet that once trimarans builders , especially folding tris, realize the tremendous potentials , it will indeed be the best compromise. good sailing and i enjoy watching your travels. cheers

Downwind is where a Cat or Tri shines.. unless its a racing machine.. in which case it will beat any mono head to head under any conditions. Cruising cats and tris are conservatively canvassed for their size, so its harder to get into real trouble. Cats are MUCH better for living space and overall comfort. Monos are much better for rough waters, do better upwind, and carry many more pounds of stores without performance impact. Most production cats don't have enough water to bridgedeck clearance to avoid the banging you experienced. Thats a decision to keep the profile lower at the expense of banging but to lower costs of manufacture. Catanas and Outremers have good clearance. Voyagers, Leopards etc don't.
@DistantShoresTV
@DistantShoresTV 7 жыл бұрын
Agreed! I wish this we had been able to try the cat with a proper downwind sail. On our last transatlantic passage we beat most of the cats because we could go directly downwind and they couldn't.

I sail my 44' cat with beverage glasses left out on a table all the time. Not in a sea-way but in many conditions. I was NEVER able to do that on any of my monohulls There are a lot of "holes" because the boat you were on had a lot of systems like its 5 heads - each with its own sink and shower drain, plus the galley, the A/C, etc. ANY boat with all that room for crew will have more "holes" than a smaller mono-hull.

Wow - that cat sure slams and it seems to echo after the slam - and do I hear clanging of dishes and things in the kitchen ... that would be troubling for us. A 'slam sensation' we experience sounds very different to this and you must have been rather close hauled and not sailing off the wind. Of course the wine in the glass theory works on certain points of sail and not as well when close hauled. We very seldom would get busy with stowing things at sea and very often have tested the 'glass on the table theory' which still amazes us and our guests every time we do - but then again we are sailing mostly with the trades - not against the trades. An enjoyable video guys - keep at it Brent

We were close reaching - not entirely close hauled... I think the bridge deck clearance is a bit too low on the Voyage. I see you have a Lagoon and from our week aboard a Lagoon 380 I don't recall the same bridge deck slamming. Glad you enjoyed the vid :-)

We have the 440 - used to own a Catana 471C but grew up on monohulls - 54 and 65 ft. Sailing past 6 years around the world on the 440 - amazing vessel and sails close to the wind due to short spreaders and genoa track position on the coach roof. Enjoy all your vids guys - great footage, lovely tone and beautiful people. Cheers

Recommend Chris White's "The Cruising Multihull" - the bridge deck clearance seems too low (5-6% of waterline length is rule of thumb) and the low window probably there for ventilation in case of capsize.

Hello Distant Shores and thank you for the great videos Please keep them coming! We had the great pleasure of sailing with friends in the Exumas and Eleutheras on their Cat. For the last 15 years we have sailed the Chesapeake on our 1965 Alburg, Marita. We love her and maintain her well. In 10 year time we would like to retire and sail down to the Caribbean and then cross to the Mediterranean. We plan to study up and do some off shore sails. I realize that bay sailing and the blue are two different situations and we have a lot to learn and much to prepare. We have Marita surveyed periodically (She's solid) and can upgrade her as needed. Distant Shores and Fans here is my question, Do you think its possible that a a well maintained 1965 Alburg could sail the blue in 2027? Thanks! Katherine

I am sorry you had a bad experience on that catamaran. I have not personally set foot on that brand but I seen some things on it indicating the design was somewhat old and not up to date. @sm6wet 7 жыл бұрын
Hello Glenn, Well, the last year they made the 500 model was in 2010 and lots happened the last 7 years. Anyhow, those slapps you had could have reduced the speed by 50%. I recoemnd you to try one of the more famous production cats from France or South Africa like Lagoon, Fountain Pajot or Leopard. After that try an Outremer and a St Francis 50. You will note a world of difference to the not so good experiance with Voyage 500. This is also quite a good read about Bridgedeck clearance on cats. catamaranguru.com/images/pdf/%20catamaran_bridgedeck_clearance.pdf Cheers from Sweden

Sm6wet, Voyage hasn't redesigned there hulls since 2010 I was on the dock last year when they delivered a brand new 580 and other than the extra feet and an extra cabin she is identical. Voyage yachts are designed for speed and they are fast. I've got eight weeks under my belt on a lagoon 450, couple weeks on a lagoon 380, a few on the 440. Lagoons are nice, but not terribly fast, the 450 was by far my favorite of the lagoons. I've sailed the new leopards up to 47 feet, my favorite are the older leopard 47s... done the Katana... not my favorite. I've chartered a Saba 50 this winter for six weeks, looking forward to that... tons of room on that boat!
@sm6wet
@sm6wet 7 жыл бұрын
ok, so maybee you can confirm then that all the banging and other sounds of the cat of this Movie is not normal on cats in this size. Well, I dont know when Voyage last made a revision on their hull designs but I know the 500 is no longer in make and that the last 500 was made in 2010 and the hull design is probably from the early 2000. I am looking forward to hear what you liked the Saba. There are not many Reviews. I like the interior design as well as exteriors but there is forum people saying she is really slow but did not hear from anyone who actually sailed her.

That bridge deck slamming would get to me quick ! The motion on the cat i'm not a fan of either. Don't know why a small boat needs that many cabins or heads either. Every time I think about a cat, these issues come up. I like the speed they have, and the large cockpit, the large foredeck, but the rest, not so much. And yeah, sail by the numbers is fine until you forget cause your exhausted, seasick or just plain preoccupied and then what.... At least your monohull will heel and spill the wind. And even with a knockdown, will come back up mostly intact. Just can't see me having one. But thanks for the vid.

Does a Catamaran have a hull speed?
@trashman1358

Hi there, I would love to go sailing around the world but can't afford it... Yep, couch captain... But after watching several channels who are sailing around the world I've come to the following conclusion - and my question is, am I right? From the couch perspective it looks like cats are really good if you want to go and see the world... Faster or more comfy depending what you buy, more time in harbour, better for socialising, more space... But watching SV Vagabond they tend to watch the wind speeds and change sails based on that rather than the feel of the cat. Whereas the mono hulls are more for the sailors - heeling, banging around, 'feeling' the boat and changing sails as appropriate (SV Bora Bora change the sails config to gain more stability) and there definitely appears to be a fear factor on a mono hull... I own a motorbike and a car - no fear factor in the car, tons on the bike... So there is more sailing involved on a mono hull. Am I in the right ball park in my thinking? See the world, buy a cat, wanna go experience sailing buy a mono hull. If anyone decides to reply who actually knows though personal experience... Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

I haven't seen much cat sailing but remember pictures from back in the days where you always saw them laying flipped over in the water. Is that something of the past or maybe it was old racing catamarans? What i'm trying to ask, are they safe or can the tip over? 😱

Any boat can flip. Catamarans can float when inverted. Monohulls with heavy keels are more likely to sink on the way to inverting. So you don't see the latter as often. Google "perceptual bias".

Catamarans are great , if I had the money , I would own one , but until than i sail a monohull , and charter a cat for few weeks a year . Modern catamarans do not have these problems like banging ,lack of storage etc. Not all cats are the same , there are performance oriented ones like Gunboat , or apartment on water like Lagoon , obviously the sailing experience will be different on them .

You seem a tad judgemental about the cat! Obviously two totally different animals. I don't have enough experience to say much, but the square footage has got to be mesmerizing I would assume. You mention using numbers vs feel to reef sails. It's tough to imagine not relying on feeling observations, but I guess I do that with the trim on my I/O runabout and it's fine. Just a matter of trusting the instruments I guess. I've heard that once or twice. Nice video! Thanks!

I'd prefer a Trimaran. All the characteristics of monohull. Not as roomy inside as a CAT but that's the trade off. . I believe they are typically fasters than CATS. (GunBoats and a few others being the exception.)

I guess this cat is one of the really bad examples of the dreaded "slamming" from waves bashing into the hull. I love the idea of a cat, but have never sailed in one- is there a minimum size to avoid slamming, or is it just a function of hull design? : /

If you want something as fast (or faster!) than a mono charter a Gunboat next time... : ) Thirty knots sitting in the saloon behind a window steering the boat- oh hell yeah... (insert drooling emoticon here)

Personally I've never liked Voyage Catamarans. They have always had too low of bridgedeck clearance and are total plastic both inside and out. In the short video it appears that the boat was ready for a refit. Now as some have pointed out, it was probably lost to Irma or Maria. I've watched many of your shows over the years and enjoyed them. They are a good combination of travel and sailing, probably the best series yet. But it does seem that you are pretty judgemental with your comments or simply haven't sailed a good catamaran. When you get a chance to sail a better performance cat, one that goes more than 6 knots SOG in 35 knots at 45 degrees apparent, make another video please. As a little observation, your boom was centered too much and the main left too lose for those conditions, IMO. Here is a video I made this last September. I think it gives a better impression of how a boat of similar length should respond to high wind situations. We were at 90 degrees apparent and much, much rougher seas. In fact, do you have a video of your old Southerly in conditions like these to compare? It would be interesting. kzbin.info/www/bejne/g5rEf4irrrSMa6s

That's either a poorly designed cat or it's overloaded. He did say the bridge deck was quite low and that's going to cause problems just about every time. I'm guessing there's not a new cat on the market today with that flaw.

Ten people on distant shores sounds stupid , guess it was best to be on that old 🐈 cat . If you didn't like that cat , try a 60 ft gunboat or a balance 526 ! They would out sail your mono hull in any wind in comfort !

So sad seeing 80% of the charter cats in the Caribbean damaged and destroyed. Bad for the environment. Also bad for the insured as we pay back the losses via rate increases. We couldn't possibly ask the industry to pay for the losses with their record profits. That would be selfish of us.😉. Good for the boat building and repair industry.

Ok guys allow me to enter the Cat vs mono hulls debate, based on a lot of data gathered from the history of Polynesia, some of the earliest sailboats were outriggers and there is some evidence that catamarans may have shown up very early in the pacific. That being said, I think anyone would say that the first culture to master open ocean sailing is definitely the Polynesians, and let's keep in mind, they used catamarans. Essentially Thor Heyerdahl's Kon tiki raft was more of a primitive catamaran than a mono hull, and we know he crossed the pacific in that.

If you're gonna compare a cat to a monohull, you really need to sail a modern cat. Today's designs and layouts are so much improved over the cat you sailed. Hull slaps are almost non existent. Next time, try one of those on for size.

Grandpa's Farm Goes Sailing Didn't sound at all like he was trying to talk himself out of it. It was clear he didn't like much about it and prefers his monohull. Then there's the fact you have an abundance of space and can't actually put anything on it, or it won't sail.

@nattsurfaren
@nattsurfaren 7 жыл бұрын
So based on the video this is not a catamaran for racing. It's a small size yacht catamaran and he had the problem that the boat was hitting the sea in such a way it would give a hard thump noise. With hydrofoil when doing a longer trip people that are not steering the boat would not experience these thumps and they would be able to sleep better and the boat would run steady in the waves.

Judging cats by sailing that boat would be like judging driving by testing a twenty year old Buick. Sail a Outremer or Catana put up the code D and enjoy reaching at twenty knots and consistently sailing at 90% of TWS. Nobody reaches with the main up accept charters.

Grandpa was right---if you would rather opt for a mono, given a choice, it's most likely because you simply can't afford the Cat, or have been listening to the wrong people, or were raised with the belief that Mono's are the only choice for sailboats. I simply can't understand why if someone were to have a FREE choice between 2 excellent boats---one a Cat and the other a Mono---why on Earth would anyone prefer a Mono!? That's just silly. And especially if you consider for living aboard, or have a family! Come on! The criticisms given in the video are given as if wholesale for ALL Cats! That's ridiculous. Like anything, you need to shop around---and certainly try shopping for something from the last decade or two. ----I guess some people like small campers while others prefer those 'home on wheels' out there---or wait a sec, that's because of cost, isn't it?--lol---Again, if one had a FREE choice only the dummies would prefer that small camper. I'ts the expense that makes the difference. End of story. There really is no debate---it is what it is---you are what you are---choose what you wish, but be honest in your reasons. Preference is one thing, but in general comparing side by side, it's a no-brainer, the Cat wins hands down, once again, especially as a liveaboard and/or for families. It's beyond me how those in Mono's seem to forget that comfort is a good thing. A comfortable Mono? Sure---if you have no choice you can make it that somehow, but it's certainly not the norm. To those bound to refute what I say...you are what you are...your choice is your choice. I'll see you in a Cat someday I'll bet. :)

You're right we need to test a different cat. I don't think I categorically described cats as all having the problems we had on the Voyage. And certainly if you have a family aboard the cat makes sense. For many people the cat works great which is why the boat was perfect for a group. You do have to be careful not to fill up all that great storage space on the cat though or she'll be overloaded slow and even lower in the water. At the end of the day I guess you're right that some people will always prefer a mono and some a cat... see you out there 😊
