Flea, I'm 54 and have struggled with depression my whole life. After my wife passed 4 1/2 years ago I have resorted back to a very introverted and lonely existence. Hearing your words and learning that you have dedicated so much to helping those creative kids have a chance to do what they love sure made me smile. Thank you.

I'm 50 this year and live a similar life since a terrible break up 18years ago. I don't have any friends as I gave up socialising, lost my job and pretty much everything. I tell myself this is how it was meant to be. My life now is a lot less stressful now and I'm happy.
@Raymond-js7xw Жыл бұрын
I can relate to what he was saying about being alone. Even though I'm divorced from my ex, we still talk and are close friends. I tell her I'm gonna always need her around to talk to, we communicate pretty well and I think that's a good thing for my daughter just to see that even though mom and dad are no longer together we can talk and get along. But I tell my ex and my daughter that I don't like being alone, when I'm alone and I can't fight off the depression and loneliness then that's when I want to start doing dumb things like using again to cope with the loneliness and depression. But I don't tell my ex-wife this because I don't want her to think that it's an excuse to try to get her to come back so I just try to deal with some of the stuff myself.

I'm your age, divorced, but was fortunate enough to meet a fantastic lady when I was flat broke and living with my mum, due to the divorce process. We're now still together eight years later. Life can be great. Work on yourself. Gym. See friends, get a hobby. We're not going to be here for much longer, so make the most of it. Good luck.👍

I met Flea sitting on the beach by himself in Mexico. I didn't recognize him at first, I was just walking down the beach and walked by a guy sitting there cross-legged looking at the ocean, and he called out to me because I was wearing an SXSW t-shirt. I had just come from the event for that year, 2001. He said 'Hey were you at SXSW this year?' I stopped walking and said yeah I was. He said 'cool some friends of mine from a band called Thelonius Monster were there too.' I walked closer to him and said yeah I know Thelonius Monster, great band. Then he asked 'Did you catch any new bands that were good?' I still didn't recognize him. He had a pretty thick full beard and his hair was longer than the usual Flea style. I went over and sat next to him on the sand, figuring well this guy seriously wants to hear what I saw at the festival so might as well indulge him. I remember raving about Mogwai, who were still relatively new to the US at the time, and he was bobbing his head, yeah, I love Mogwai. Then I talked about Train, from SFO, whose show I liked a lot. He knew them. Then I mentioned Vallejo, from Texas, and Flea didn't know the name. He wanted to know what their music was like, and I said 'Well they play that mix of white punk, funk, and hip-hop that's so popular these days.' By this time I'm looking right into his face and idiot that I am, I still haven't clocked who he was. I guess he couldn't stand it any longer, and he said, "Hey I'm with a band from LA that kind of started that sound you're talking about,' and laughing, and at that point I happened to look down at his hands and saw his inked knuckles, and went 'Christ, you're Flea.' I asked what he was doing there. It turned out he was renting a small house right next to mine on that beach (La Cachora, Todos Santos). He said the band was on a two-week break between recording and touring, and that he wanted to go to Thailand and meditate, but didn't think two weeks was long enough to do the long trip, so he picked Todos Santos instead and was meditating in the cabana next door. We talked about other bands, and about traveling, which he obviously loved. He wrote his email address on the scrap of a paperback book cover after I offered to give him tips on Thailand, since I was spending half the year there then, but of course I lost it pretty soon after that. I didn't see him again on the beach or anywhere else in town, that was it.

Wow! When I saw this video and subsequently read your comment. I found your story to be such a magical story, it touched me. So much so that I just wanted to tell you that I really connected with your fascinating experience. I'm 42 years old and with music being as important to me as literal air for as far back as my earliest memories, the RHCP are one of the few that has held a Kings seat in my heart since the very beginning. It's one thing to meet a celebrity or a rockstar and follow the ol' rundown routine of autograph, snap the selfie, a quick awkward handshake and that's it- it's over, on to the next. That kind of interaction is robotic and hollow, it has no life, no breath to it- forgotten and filed away along side the thousands of other exact same mundane encounters within the star's subconscious inventory-gone forever. But you Sir, you got to meet Flea, not necessarily as "Flea, RHCP legendary bassist", but as "Mike", the friendly stranger on the beach with a faded Jimmy Hendrix tattoo on his arm, kind eyes and a passion for music. I think the most beautiful part about your story is that you yourself are a fan of the band (I mean, who isn't , honestly lol) and it's not as if Flea has a face that can easily blend and dissolve among the crowd. He stands out! Obviously not just because of his unique physical characteristics, but of course his ridiculous talent and certainly his galactic level star status- it seems you should have known in an instant (beard or no beard) exactly who he was, I mean, he even has a very distinct speaking voice for peet's sale - the dude is a very "obvious" man for lack of a better word lol! However, pushing all of that aside, the universe gave you (and him, I might add) a most precious little gift that day and blinded you but only just enough to distort his fame and for just long enough to make an honest friend without all the noise and lights in the way. I'd be willing to bet that you surely made an impression on him as well. Surely dude gets noticed literally everywhere! -Gas station, grocery stores, Starbucks, the fucking DMV! There's probably someone yelling out his name or asking for autographs/pics etc at LEAST 7-10 times a DAY - EVERYday! AND he's been famous AF since the early 90's. That would drive me bananas! The introvert in me just had a stroke! Ha! So, yeah, you probably stood out to him for being younger than 80 yrs old and not immediately recognizing him. {{Actually, now that I think about it, you mentioned that after a while he said that he was in a band that started that rock/funk sound ..... He's so used to people knowing him and his band, and especially since you just came from a concert where a bunch of his buddies bands played and you obviously enjoyed the genre. Hahaha!! He was probably so confused for a bit and thinking "da fuck? Is this guy trolling me in real life?" So, he couldn't help it anymore and covertly mentioned who he was ... He he}} Anyways, what I'm saying is for that fleeting moment in time and space you were just 2 dudes on a Mexican beach sharing a passion of hearts. Regardless of the incredibly different life paths you both walked to get you there. Additionaly, maybe that's why you lost his contact info he wrote down? Because you both were only meant to share that one short but monumental experience- an assention lesson hidden in the fabric of your brief comrodarie, perhaps. For your sake, I hope not. However, the impermanence of your short-lived affair certainly does romanticize the whole thing, indeed. Idk bro .... Maybe I'm just weird (and I'll admit I certainly am) or ... well damn, maybe these mushrooms are stronger then I was expecting and I'm just feeling like everything is philosophically divine and universally deliberate 🤔 hmmm .... It's all so fascinating anyway, that's for sure. Edit: Holy shit that's a long comment - the hell is wrong with me 😳🍄

@@ozzmary420 I concluded the same thing when I realized I'd lost the scrap of paper, torn from a guidebook cover, with his email. That it was meant to be one time only. It was actually hard to catch the character of his voice with the waves crashing on the beach close by, we both had to speak more loudly than normal. Also he was wearing a sheepskin hoodie. As you said, that was part of it, a weird mist over the encounter where I couldn't recognize him for a bit and he was relieved of fame for a bit. Anyway, I'm glad you enjoyed the telling.

When I was 21, in 1991, I discovered Flea and he transmitted me his so enthusiastic way of playing bass with so much energy and passion. But the more I discover the man, the more I am touched by him. He has something really helpful and solar in his personality, something really good as a person, and good for the others. And when he says "I had to sit still and deal with me", it is completely similar with the experience I had with zen meditation. I love this guy. He makes life better for everyone.

Kinda, yeah. I think money is a big motivator for them too. I do reckon the huge amount Fru has to pay his ex-wife is a big factor in his returning. I mean, he was doing some far out electronic music for ten years, then comes back... to the formula, the earner. And why the band booted Josh so sourly... the accountants probably had a say in that. Don't meet your heroes. And don't get star struck.

Since I was about 12 or 13 years old, I fell in love with the RHCP and their music that has always been so inspirational to me. When most bands play it’s easy to hear how great they are, but with the RHCP and especially Flea for me, and in my opinion, I can feel, not just hear, the gift of the expression of what is in his heart and soul coming through his bass and any other instrument he chooses to express with. Flea inspired me to play music in school where I learned how to play saxophone (from soprano up to baritone. Maybe a contra bass sax one day). Then after high school, I gathered the courage to pick up the bass guitar. And every time I picked up that Fender Jazz Bass, I wanted to play like Flea, don’t get me wrong, I wanted to play my unique expression, but it was his unique expression and passion that inspired and guarded me. No, I’m a 45-year-old father to a beautiful little five-year-old girl who is absolutely brilliant, intelligent and loving and caring and I can tell when we listen to music together and that she already is capturing an understanding of the communication that comes to music, the expression, not just some sound to make you Bob your head . And we both love music together. And truly, I have Flea, and my grandfather, who was born on a little island in the Adriatic Sea called Unije, who taught me all about music at a young age, and played a wooden clarinet himself. He sure loved Artie Shaw. I’m sure Flea will never see this but thank you for having an impact on me and now my daughter through me sharing your impact on me with her. Thanks.
