We must make a distinction between the old covenant and the new covenant. Under the old covenant Israel was exclusively God's people, although Gentiles were allowed to join with them via circumcision and following the law of God. Under the new covenant which Christ established on the cross, only those who have faith in Jesus are God's people, and that is certainly not restricted to one ethnic group. Salvation is open to all peoples of the world. So it's error to call the modern nation of Israel "God's people" because of the new covenant, which requires the new birth and true faith.
