There is no Alpha and Beta. Another thing is that these terms have been misrepresented. In the animal world and only the predatory one they have these terms. An Alpha predator means a predator that has no hunters, it is Alpha because no one can hunt it, it feeds on everyone and no one feeds on it. In the sphere that concerns the dinosaurs, there were many Alpha predators and Beta predators, they were shown to group and better study the animal world, that's all. As for the wolves, the pack is structured in roles, there is no Alpha wolf, there is the leading wolf of the pack, the one who leads the pack, the young wolves one day, those who are referred to by the ignorant mass as beta wolves, will take the place of the leader when he is gone, so they are not even beta wolves if we really want to specify. My definition of being a good man came from my grandfather. He worked at a mill grading lumber, boxed successfully, and trapped beaver, coyote, fox, and rattlesnake. He also raised pigeons, goats, rabbits and would care for any suffering animal from skunk to seagull. He always listened to and worked as an equal with my grandmother. I watched him snap a bobcat’s neck in a trap and I watched him weep openly when a sickly goat kid couldn’t be nursed to health. I strive to someday be as strong and gentle and openly accepting as him.

True masculinity comes in many forms. It's not about shutting out every emotional response and condemning every human action, it's about knowing when and where it's appropriate to express them. I wish there were more men like you in the world Bjorn, you are the example of how to carry yourself. Calm, collected, together. There is no need for bravado or extreme outbursts of anger to show how you feel about something. That's a mark of maturity in both sexes of course, but it is especially important as men because the draw to explode at times can be much greater, and the consequences thereof are more destructive.

Speaking as an anthropologist, I always loved reading these "alpha male" websites where they basically just try to be sociopaths. I see it at work all the time too. The problem is, the culture of being a leader or a defender disappeared as generations of parents gradually fell into corporate jobs and those companies no longer provided loyalty or a sustainable career. The people who are honest have to move around, and the people who cheat the system (act unsustainably) are rewarded. This bled into family life and so we no longer have models of sustainable men. Just corruption, and unsustainable or toxic power masquerading as strength. That's why we mint sociopaths and not men these days. The only solution is a return to balancing the population out with more people who work for themselves and not in bureaucracies. It honestly applies to women the same as men.

Let me first say you are totally right; there is a stigma around mental health and issues from childhood that certainly prevents a lot of people from being taken seriously. But there are so a lot of people who turn their problems into their core identity, and I also think that the "masculine" approach of dismissing pain and challenges has evolutionary behavioral benefit. In a situation where needs can't be met and things are terrible, a survival situation, people must ignore problems in order to focus on things that can be done. Kids learn this, or used to learn this, in sports. The team has a will and goal of its own and can't stop for every injury or injustice. Anyone (intelligent) who played team sports understands both the value and the destructiveness of this mindset, which is why people say sports teach life lessons but then have a hard time explaining exactly why. Plus, after a sports practice or game you are supposed to revert to a system of support and caring at home or at school. The difference between war/survival and sports is how long the period of strain lasts. Great societies have been born from this stoic mindset but that culture usually decays when the society starts to thrive. It has its place, in other words, but it is not a complete solution. At this point, I think society is falling apart because it isn't meeting reasonable needs. I think the reason so many people are pressing so hard on illegitimate needs is because there is no forum for legitimate needs. Your sexual/racial/etc. identity and issues are easier to discuss, actually, than the fact that the entire middle and lower class is failing. Bite sized problems therefore get put before the 800 pound gorilla in the room. And this causes animosity. I don't know how to resolve that but I think it would mean moving in a direction where we focus on common underlying issues and agree to face hard realities instead of relying on hope. If we can no longer afford healthcare or caring for our elderly in a human way, we need to acknowledge the system we are participating in of our own Accord is not working. I think that whenever this happens, the Left and the Right step in to confuse the issues and profit.

It's an elegant quote, but IMO it falls a bit short when put under scrutiny. Everyone of us lives according to a certain picture of what is right and wrong, and in the case of some people, especially those who had a problematic or even abusive upbringing, that picture might be severely skewed or full of contradictions. In that case "just being" can lead to very horrible consequences, since people might lack an innate sense of what is "good". So it is really important to reevaluate one's idea of what it means to be a good person from time to time. The sense of being a conscious individual is to live consciously - it is the only thing that can prevent us from ruining our lives by committing the same errors again and again. Btw. M.A. himself argued for constant mindfulness of ones actions, and I think that can also consist in talking and maybe even arguing with those we trust about the correct course of action from time to time.

@@Zachary- Do you really think M. Aurelius had no intellectual exchange with others? He wasn't a retired hermit but rather an emperor and thus in continuos contact with the senatorial elite, who - at least since the times of Cicero - engaged in philosophical and political debates as an integral part of their life. He had a huge corpus of correspondence, writing even multiple times a day to some friends. I think it is important to differentiate the Stoic ideal from the actual historical figure who tried to implement those ideals into their life. I think it might be for the better that he had a lot of exchange with others since he became a well rounded and prolific writer, which enabled him to express his ideas in such a way that they had a huge impact afterwards. Whether he wanted to publish the meditations is debatable, but the fact that they reached the public suggests that at least a certain group of people were aware of his literary production.

That's how I think the word 'alpha' is being used these days. Branding. That's what appeals about cults! The conformity & distinct ways/beliefs of things. Strip it back to find the real nuggets of virtue & wisdom, though. 😊 Highway to hell is paved with good intentions. That said, some folks lack that capacity & have to be met where they're at, they like what they like, they're willfully ignorant. But: they're hopefully going to be different in a few years. There's ebb & flow. Phases are normal -- self exploration & experimentation. Folks who look to improve themself, even if in ways they laugh at a few years down the road, hopefully gain from their experience. But many will not, & it dissolves into a codependent, festering, abusive, trauma-bonded mental health fiasco, or a world of façade, & everything maladaptive in-between ranging from mild to extreme, "relatively harmless but not your cuppa tea" to "harmful with many falling for it, or raising their children that way." That's why good examples are so important, because as individualistic as we can be, we can't help that we learn by example & crave connection. We're social beings. Real selfhood transcends all that, & can see into another's soul through their eyes & attunement to them as one organism to another. That's why the simple things in life matter -- things are stripped back, free. This is where sensitivity has its strength. It cuts through bullshit. So as best as one can (pending the circumstances), taking the high road with dignity & respect of people, no matter what you think of the other person, will hopefully imprint subconsciously (& maybe also consciously). Thank you for sharing your thoughts. I grew up without a dad around, and I'm 27 now. These last few years, I have been really struggling with knowing whether I am truly a "man". These ideas that modern society pushes of what a man looks like, it just doesn't line up with who I am, and so I question my masculinity. I don't make an overwhelming amount of money, I'm not physically impressive, I don't go on grand adventures. But I do work 12 hours a day, 5-7 days a week to make sure My wife and son have everything that they want/need. I do make whatever sacrifice is necessary to provide for my family. I spend any and all of my free time with my wife and son, and I love teaching my son and spending one on one time with him. These things get me made fun of in today's society, because I'm not making myself my number one priority - my priority is my family. I sacrificed my wild dream of becoming a rap artist for a living, because I recognized once my son was born that I couldn't do that, work a full time job, and spend the amount of quality time with my family that I wanted to. I'm happier overall - but society makes it tough to be a man who puts his family first. Thank you for the reassurance.

In the case of these men on the interwebs proclaiming themselves to be "alpha", it is a marketing gimmick. It is my understanding that they charge a lot of money to coach or mentor young lads in how to be an alpha. Unfortunately this is not something that a young man can learn easily when already in to adulthood. That training should have been delivered by his father starting at about five years old. Reminds me of Game of Thrones when Joffrey proclaims "I am the King" and then Tywin responds with "any man who must say I am the king is no true king."

I know the book well. Actually the author used to live close to my home. Having read the book, I shared it with a very good friend in the UK who then went along to his local town hall where Mr. Biddulph was speaking. Steve's book and what he spoke of at the talk, was something that my friend considered and passed on to his young son, who over time developed into a fine young man with a successful acting career that he loves and completely believes in. But average means something different to "all women are weaker than all men". I hit the gym and do martial arts, and i know gals that are shorter than most of the boys and are significantly stronger. One is a professional weight lifter and she can bench press like a hundred kilos easily and doesn't looks like an Amazon. Like if anything she looks like a thinner, shorter, petite wonder woman. Her arms are thinner than mine, but she just has more training and technique in how to expert her strength. And let me tell you, she IS stronger than the average men on that gym. And let's not even talk about the gals in MMA. I'll bet you that those gals can reck any guy any time of the day. Exactly. As for letting the kids sleep in our bed, for a while both of mine would sleep with us because of some strange things that were happening at night. We own a large farm and have everything fenced in with livestock. For a while something was tapping on both of my kids windows about 8 feet high once or twice a week around 1 am. I sat up several nights, rifle in hand and did hear it several times but when i would throw the blinds open it would be gone. One night there was a human handprint left in the dew. Moral of the story is, i didnt feel safe at all leaving my babys in their rooms alone so i put them in bed with my wife and slept in their rooms for weeks waiting to ambush the tapper. I never killed the perp but to make me feel better i built a very nice set of bunkbeds and put them in the corner of our room. As for the tapper, it did infact come and bang on my window two different nights but after that it stopped. Strange thing is that i never got it on any of the security cameras.

Hey Bjorn, one of the words you mentioned, "simp", doesn't mean being generally kind to women (holding doors open for them, lifting heavy things for them, etc, typical chivalry). A simp is a man that continues going above and beyond for a woman in the hopes that she will return his affection, long after it has already become clear the feelings aren't mutual. I'd say a simp is the opposite of masculinity. A man, while being kind to women, does not allow women to control him, or lead him on and use his emotions for their benefit. Classic masculinity has wrongly been branded toxic masculinity these days, there are lots of women missing out on real men. Their heads are filled with rubbish from an early age about masculinity. I find myself very much alone, but saying that I am equally happy in the mindset that I know I'm practical, strong, stoic, intelligent, responsible, able to achieve many tasks that come my way, I choose my life so I'm content, relaxed and comfortable. I turned my back on the current societies that lock me out as a medical leper, thats their loss, because I'm stronger for it, I'm a fighter and I will not succumb to any brainwashed rubbish. We are many in this fight and I will never back down.

good thing is, you don't want to have a partner who thinks true masculinity is toxic. So in a way, they eliminate themselves from ruining your life. They'll just date these "alpha-males" who are arrogant :)

As a woman I agree. I think that masculinity is primal, but bettered. It is easy to be an animal, but to be a man you must overcome yourself. I think it is a pity that our cultures have lost transition rites, and other methods that helped people to embrace their developement and different stages of life and their meaning. It may be one reason why we are so confused these days... In Mari culture, for example, when a girl becomes of age she is given the horn of the girl, that she must blow, to be a woman. But it is very difficult to get a sound out of it. The girl has to struggle and spend time with the process and go through frustration and anger and sadness when it just wont work... But when she finally gets a sound out of it, she will blow it with great pride! As she should be proud of being a woman! And the sound will be heard from afar by every man in the land and suitors will begin to flock up. As they should. But these days we have instagram and photoshop and...very few women. And even fewer men for serious suitors. Alot of simps and players.

As Bjorn is explaining one doesn't give in to outbursts to express masculinity. Just as women must control their innate emotional instincts which might not serve society or themselves well. But it is a cultiral thing, and I accept the differences between slavic and scandinavian. I too am from the time of the CCCP, and as a fin, see much from both sides. Both cultures have their goods and bads. I could not be with a russian man, however... Because the russian man could not be with me! Finnish women, you know... But we do not have to be together. I personally take you for a friend, and that is enough for me. All russian people that I know are goid workers and good people in general... But they do give in to their whims quite easily. It works in russia, tho... So I don't judge. Just respect that some people are more stable than you and might honor backbone more.

Bjorn I certainly hope people hear you out. Really listen to what you are saying. Because it is Vidally important. As a grandmother of 2 grandsons, I have tried to instill these values in them. Because they do not have father's one passed and the other in the throws of alcoholism. Thank God, both grandsons are their own men. But our young people need mentors. Especially our young men. Thank you for sharing these talks. Our society, no matter your geographic area. As a woman 64 year's of age, I've seen the vast spectrum. And believe me. Women want men to be men. Agree with you 100%. So happy to have a wonderful husband who is masculine and yet gentle. We have been married 59 and 1/2 years. He has been a great to live with and has taken care of me and our 2 children. Now at the age of 78, I appreciate him even more each year. He worked really hard to give me the privilege of being a stay at home mom and I love him dearly for that. I have had a wonderful life and would not change a thing. I look forward each day being with him. We put Jesus Christ as the center of our lives and our marriage and it has been a blessing. Good bless all.

To recognise and respect femininity and to be masculine is difficult for young men living in a world where gender is being destroyed. Women and men should have equal rights, although we must not lose the fact to realise that we are different and there are times when this is vitally important.

We don't have equal rights. The scale has tipped all the way in favour of vvomen. Bjorns message of "a real man must be prepared to sacrifice for vvomen" is dangerous and out of date in this modern gynocentric world. As soon a she declares "I'm not happy" the full weight of the system is going to come down on the man like a ton of bricks. Child support, alimony, transfer of wealth, false allegations, biased family courts, believe all vvomen etc etc. No amount of masculine frame is going to protect you from that.

@Mystic Warrior Sometimes the right to speak. The man often speaks for her as if she cannot articulate. I will reveal my age (Above 50) for the purpose of generational teachings and customs. The era of which you are raised is a factor. Also that these generations are being smashed together in big tech communications is noticeably difficult for my age group causing many misunderstandings. Our icons are different, our idioms are different, our references are different. I grew up when a door was held open for me. Now I'm more invisible in an atmosphere of indifference. A healthy man seeks a feminine "touch". I know this as a caregiver tending to dying macho men. In the end, which is often our deathbed many submerged truths cannot be denied any longer. Its how we lived our life relationally to all others that becomes most important.

I am mistrustful of a great deal of men in general based on experiences with what masculinity has been twisted into- so many seem to believe that masculinity is rooted in the disrespect and abuse of femininity. I am encouraged by men in my life who find their masculinity in patience, protectiveness, support, generosity, and encouragement. I am lucky to have them, and I want to be a supportive influence to the men around me to express their masculinity in a healthy way that comes from within instead.

I think it's not about gender, but about the role you play. Every family needs at least one calm, collected and capable member to stay afloat. Traditionally men are expected to play that role, but reality is another beast. When men are immature, unstable and incompetent, sometimes the women, girls or young boys in the family would have to step in to keep things together.
