In my opinion, English Ivy (Hedera helix) needs to be banned for sale! It has taken over much of our woodlands by creeping along the ground, shading out native plants, and climbing up big native trees. It's one of the worst woodland invasives, but yet it doesn't seem to get catch enough flack and remains an extremely popular plant at big box stores.
If you're looking for groundcovers, consider native options first. To find native groundcover options native to your area, you can:
1. Consult your state's or province's local Native Plant Society, nature center, government website, or Department of Conservation and Natural Resources page. These resources usually provide many native alternatives.
2. Consult a local native plant expert or gardener.
Any other ideas? Share them in the comments!

Ok but what should be sold/gotten instead? Not being critical, but people want these things as a sort of groundcover plant. Can you make a recommendation of a native alternative that provides the same or similiar effect? I appreciate ecology concerns greatly (its why I have begun an all out purge of chinese privet and multiflora rose), but for things still sold in stores, people either dont know, or dont care if you just tell them to not buy a plant, however if you inform them, and mention a native alternative that serves the same purpose, they go for that instead (assuming its not prohibitivly expensive)

Sure! Here are a few native options. I mentioned two briefly at the end, but here's a longer list. Make sure to use BONAP or a similar website / tool to determine if these plants are native to your area: 1. moss phlox - Phlox subulata - evergreen groundcover that creeps and expands 2. woodland phlox - Phlox divaricata - same as above. Beautiful and fragrant spring flowers! 3. golden ragwort - Packera aurea - also evergreen, bright yellow flowers in the spring. Deer-resistant, spreads quickly and is adaptable to shade or sun. 4. Allegheny pachysandra - Pachysandra procumbens - native pachysandra to the southeast US 5. wild ginger - Asarum canadense - pretty heart-shaped leaves. Tolerant of dense shade. 6. Green-and-gold - Chrysogonum virginianum 7. any of our native ferns! - some of them are also evergreen! The problem is, unfortunately, that English ivy is much more accessible than many of these plants. Most big-box garden centers don't carry these plants - you'd probably have to go to a native plant nursery to find some of these. That's part of the problem, too! Folks seeing this; feel free to add native groundcovers in this chain! The ones I included are mostly native to the eastern US - any suggestions for the Pacific Northwest would be appreciated!

I'm in UK and I got a gift of a 3plant pot with 3 plants with entirely different requirements for water and feeding. One of those was an ivy. I took it outside, plopped it in the ground and forgot about it. Now 6 years later it's clung on to my fence and rotted it through by holding the moisture. So I've just had the whole fence replaced. I had a dead 6foot tree trunk that I'm going to train it over and keep it away from the fence. I'll keep it trimmed back to the tree and when that falls it will all be thrown out. I have birds nesting in it year on year but will replace the ivy with suitable nesting boxes.

I agree, plus getting reliable information is not as easy as commenters seem to think. While there is lots of information about native plants and what grows in a given area online, finding those plants for sale and learning how to maintain them has been an exhausting process. I have yet to purchase the first plant! I need plants that grow under huge trees in the South, what was a climax forest when houses were built here 50 years ago. My yard has English ivy and other shade loving ground covers and large mature shade loving shrubs but nothing else. The only natives are a few scraggly grasses and mosses, and very little of either. The ground is thick with fallen leaf litter and it’s moist underneath. I am trying to find what I can do to increase the biodiversity of plants so that animals of all kinds have a chance. My large piles of fallen branches and sticks have produced a little life! A family of wrens has claimed one pile, a large black snake slithered by me to hide under a shrub and a red tail hawk flew 15’ past me with a mouse in his talons this past week. I was overjoyed! I am now looking for wildflower and native seeds to sow because I haven’t found potted plants for sale.

It's an issue in Australia too although much less so. They barely survive the long dry summers and when fires come through they are wiped out completely whereas the natives have evolved with fire for millions of years. They're mostly a problem in periurban and metropolitan parks as well as old Victorian era buildings. It's very satisfying seeing wetter areas finally dry out and burn. They could be completely choked with ivy but the natives recover so much quicker from fire and often the Ivy never comes back because it's not popular anymore.

1,000% correct. ADD Wisteria and Trumpet Vine to this list too!! Both of those are Jurassic quality monsters that are more than capable of eating your entire house, escaping into your neighborhood, engulfing trees, fences and anything in their path, all while choking out native species left & right and making it virtually impossible to contain them within only a few short years!! I have both of these invasive plants. I planted them 25 years ago (because nobody warned me) and I can tell you for certain, they are a FULL TIME job 8 months a year to try to manage!! I literally have to cut them back WEEKLY during the growing season, plus I have to cut 100% of the seed pods off (on a 20 foot tall wisteria) to prevent it from taking over my yard. Plus, I had to pour concrete over my entire back yard to prevent the trumpet vine from spreading through root runners and I still have to be constantly vigilant by digging up & pull out (not cutting off ) the runners that sprout up to 50 feet away from the “mother” plant. It’s exhausting!! These plants are real honest to goodness BEASTS and should NEVER be sold in any retail garden center for any reason at all. Beautiful as these Medusa plants are, it’s not worth the extreme effort it requires to have them!!

Invasive and FAST GROWING! Grows all around our property and I can't keep up with it. i don't use pesticides, so I'm left with lard manual labor to tame it. I need some little goats-I hear they eat ivy.

I recently got Baltic ivy as a fence cover and it doesn’t look that invasive. It likes to stay low but when I put it on a fence, some leaves die and doesn’t look healthy at all. Are they that different?

I totally get it but what also blows my mind is you can maintain the growth of the plant so if it's really beautiful to people and they want it in a particular location then go for it but control it

I know other places have a real problem with how invasive English ivy is. I live in Texas and have a very small potted English ivy. It will die and grow back every few months and most it’s grown is maybe like 6-8inch dangling off the pot. Definitely not invasive for where I live but it’s crazy to see it’s so invasive many other places because it’s not the case at all for my area

I just realized you're in Philadelphia area Andrew. I'm in the southwest part and I've been looking into planting a while and just starting. I got an aloe vera, habanero and sweet mint for now. I have been wanting to throw seeds out in my grass to let grow wild and add some vibrance to my yard. I was thinking about lavender. Any recommendations?

It shocks me how people rationalize having ivy in spite of all the damage it does. In King County alone It is impacting over 80% of our trees. Yes, we need to stop by in these plants from Home Depot, Lowe's and any other vendor. Not only is it impacting our native plants it's impacting wildlife as well. Ivy is an interstate for rats at least that's how we looked at it when I worked at the public health department

It is illegal to sell plants that are on the Noxious weed lists. There problem is that this weed isn't on those lists, probably because it's not an issue for agriculture. I wonder if reaching out to our Noxious weed boards in each state would do any good?

Has the negative effect of ivy as an invasive plant been scientifically invastigated sufficiently? Within its native range here in central europe it is also very widespread a often covers the ground or tree trunks in a similar fashion.

Same problem here in Scotland but with Rhododendron. A horrible non-native invasive that has gripped our countryside, particularly the west coast where it favours the more temperate, wet climate. Yet it is still widely sold and purchased in garden shops. It needs to be banned.

me being confused for a moment because Ivy is awsome before realizing hes talking about the US and its not native there. but really if youre in europe ivy is banger for basically anything, doesnt harm the trees too as long as the trees big enough (or you keep it in check) ivy trees look awsome too.. also, its one of the latest bloomers and offers a lot of wild bees sustenance in the fall.
