Thanks for the great review Jack. I saw it Friday morning and agree with every word. This is what I wrote on Threads when I came out of the theater: "That was brilliant. Best film of the year. Fiennes will win the Oscar. I'm calling it here. Truly engrossing. Great acting all the way around. Terrific script. Fantastic set and costume detail. Very thought provoking. See it if you can." The ending has definitely already ruffled some feathers, but it worked for me too.

I saw this movie on Saturday then took my husband back on Monday to see it again. Liked it every bit as much on the second watch. I agree with you on every point. Great review by you. Breathless at times. Regarding the music, Hitchcock said the Psycho music added 34% of the dramatic impact. This music was its own character. I appreciated the score as it went from background to foreground. Then to background. I appreciated the ambiguous ending. What Catholic or Christian or human being could argue with the last comment by the new pope, “This is how God made me.” I hope it sweeps the Oscars and encourages quality movies to be made. Thanks for the review. I'm a Catholic in my 40's and I saw it with my Catholic mother who is in her 70's and it we really enjoyed the movie. We immigrated to Canada from El Salvador. I'm a physician. So in real life we've interacted with catholic that are represented by each of the different candidates for pope, and the nuns, in the movie. This I think made us appreciated the political machinations even more. The ending though I felt a little rushed. I can already seen Ryan George making pitch meeting video where he says: and in the end it's revealed that the new pope .... Wow it's going to be really hard for him to be pope after that reveal... No, super easy, barely an inconvenience. See he says that the last pope was fine with this, so it's all good. Since it's what was going to be the most controversial aspect from the book, I feel it needed more time to explore the issue, if it was going to be included.

Having read the book beforehand, I can say that they pretty much filmed the book as written. If anything, the ending is slightly _toned down_ from the one in the book. Both the book and movie give you a real "you are there" feeling as the conclave goes through multiple ballots. There's an old saying which is quoted in the book but not the movie: "He who enters the conclave as pope, leaves it as a cardinal." We see that play out with a number of our main characters, Adeyemi, Tremblay, and even Tedesco. In the end, though, it's clear the right man won, and almost everyone sees that.

Fiennes deserves the Oscar Tucci best supporting Acting and production was excellent all the way around Downside is the “twist” which took away from an otherwise excellent film.

"Conclave" was a wonderful film, the surprising feel-good movie of the year! I must say, though, if it represents the Sacred College of Cardinals accurately, they are in need of some guidance regarding not backstabbing their colleagues and making voting decisions based on what they know of the candidates and not hearsay. Maybe they could learn something from the Baha'is.

I liked the production, the acting, the music, the fantastic photography, the adaptation of the book, the political, philosophical and theological tones but I didn't like the end on both the film and the book as I found it pointless and/or perhaps not daring enough. Pointless because the "health" problem ( I'm trying to avoid spoiling the end) that Cardinal Benitez had didn't change anything at all. It wasn't something visible, it wasn't something functional and he didn't even know about it up until it happened to be in need of an operation. So Cardinal Benitez's claim at the very end that he was standing between the certainties was completely baseless. The plot twist was IMHO an unsuccessful attempt to push for yet one more time a very specific agenda spoiling the rest of the film. Shoving into our throats again and again and again the same thing is boring and tiresome.
