Reasoning is simple - Neto's injury prone and needs to have his minutes managed so I don't know if Maresca will start him, Nkunku and Caicedo have played a lot of minutes so far and need to be/can be rested, and Felix has just joined the squad and is probably not ready to play yet. I'd start Neto on the left though, and Jorgensen in goal.

What is easy to forget regarding the City game is just how easy they were going. We had possession and they were absolutely okay and did not mind one bit. That's not us dominating, that's us failing to be threatening enough that City had to put in maximum effort. I don't like that this is the case, I don't want it to be the case, but we're not achieving anything by pretending to be better than we actually are. And regarding Maresca, I could forgive him being weird about selling Petro and putting Sanchez in goal, but I'm struggling to see what he wants to do with Palmer and Nkunku that doesn't turn them into 75% of the players they could be. They are inside forwards. All the talk about how versatile they are is eroding my confidence in him. If he doesn't want to use them, fair enough, but then that's what he should be saying. Frankly, we have an absurdly talented squad and any half-decent manager could make something with the ingredients we have. Wanting Neto for 50 and Felix for 40 and Osimhen for 90-100 on top is easy mode. A manager who struggles with all this... I don't care for the excuses, and I don't want to hear anything about a guy with a five year job and a ten year plan. If Maresca can't make a serious push for top 4, if he struggles to be anything beyond mid table then he's just not good enough.

I think you've gotten things a bit wrong here. Firstly, yes City never came out of the second gear, but tbf neither did we. It's Pep's 9th season in a very settled squad, and our first game under a new manager and a new system, the difference shouldn't be surprising whatsoever. Almost no players in MW1 are match sharp, that applies to all clubs. Second, the talk about versatility comes in because both Nkunku and Palmer's best positions are centrally, and they can't both play there at the same time. One of them will certainly be playing centrally in most games, but it's good that they can also play on the wings because we'll need that depth. Lastly, while I agree that Maresca needs to be pushing seriously for top 4 (although I don't think we'll make it in), these are still young players in a new system. Even Poch started horrendously and ended up 6th. It'll take time for these players to get used to the system and each other in the system, and results will certainly be better in second half of the season than in the first half.

But there is a beginning narrative that we "did quite well" because we had possession to the extent that we did. That we actually almost dominated City in parts of the game. And I don't like that narrative. It gives us credit for something we did not really do. If City had wanted to dial up the pace then they could have. They demonstrated that well enough. To your second point, that Nkunku and Palmer cannot both play centrally, do look at City's lineup against us. It was a perfect 3-box-3 with Silva and KDB being the top of the box and Kova and Lewis being the bottom of the box. At least that's what it was on paper. In practice, the box rotated to become a diamond, KDB often rather far out left, Silva floating up high, and Lewis wide right. But KDB and Silva were both floaty players with the freedom to pick their space. Why can't we use Nkunku and Palmer like that? On your point 3, I agree that some time is needed, but you said it yourself. Players have to "get used to the system". Who decided that we had to use a system that takes so long to learn? What are the actual benefits of the system to justify that choice? As far as I can tell, the person who made that choice of system is Maresca. I don't know the reasoning he used, I wish he'd share it, but the choice was his. If that leads to bad follow-on effects then that's on Maresca. Ultimately, we've spent an additional 100+ million pounds on the team, Fofana and Lavia and Nkunku are back, and last year's signings are now a year older and wiser. The squad is better. If Poch was fairly close to top 4 with what he had to work with then Maresca has to be as well.

@@Monochromatic_Spider I don't think we dominated City at any point of the game. Maybe they could have dialled it up, maybe not, all we can say is they didn't. It was still a fairly even game. At both ours and theirs peak, they would've won much easier than they did. But we didn't need to concede either of the goals - both are from poor individual moments - and we could have scored more too, just like they could have as well. I don't think we should be shouting "we're ready to challenge the league", but given the circumstances that was still a good start. Long way to go now. As for why we can't use Nkunku and Palmer like Silva and KDB, it's simple, Silva and KDB are better players right now. Nkunku is an attacker, and he's only ever played as such. Palmer is an attacking midfielder, but he's coming off of a season of playing RW, and is not developed enough to match the intensity of the league playing as an attacking mid. Silva has played in midfield roles long enough under Pep to be good at it, and KDH is a proper midfielder. I don't know if Nkunku can ever be one, but Palmer will get there, just not right now and not against such a big team. As for the system - it's not in anyone's control except the SDs and owners. They think playing a possession based football is the right way to go, and given the dominance of the system in modern football, it's hard to blame them. If Maresca fails, they'll get someone else, who might make his own tweaks but it'll still be a possession based system. For all we know, someone's going to come up with something better within the next 3 years, in which case all of this will be a waste, but from what we know now, this seems like the ideal direction to go into. I expect more from Maresca than I did from Poch. His style of football suits the team better, he's gotten a largely stable squad whereas Poch had to fix the mess from before first, and our squad is stronger (and hopefully less injury-riddled) than under Poch. I don't know if we can get into top 4, or maybe final results will not reflect our improvements, but anything that's worse than Poch's performance last season would be a failure.

My only note on Sanchez is that it would be very harsh to judge him for the city game, yes he HAS to save the kovacic shot, but we are also playing against the best team in the last 15 years if not the entire history of the prem. I will give him the benefit of the doubt, so for me this game against wolves is where he has to perform well, if he does fine he keeps his place, but if he doesnt then jorgensen has shown he can step up. Lavia is 100% starting.He was rested mid-week which is why he didn't start, but when he came on, he looked way better than Caicedo. Lavia is Maresca's primary DM no doubt about it. I think Nkunku is stronger playing from behind not all the way up front, i like noni out on right, but would drop gusto, play 3 back with Nico up front and squeeze in plamer and Nukunku in that front midish area ... if the 3 back are getting smoked, gotta drop noni for gusto to shore up that back
