How do you feel when you give yourself permission to stop reading something you're not enjoying? Is there some kind of "virtue" in forcing yourself to persist and endure an unenjoyable character or story until the bitter end? Let's discuss the dreaded DNF, with a look at issue 15 of "Oh Reader" magazine and the example of "The Three-Body Problem" throughout.
Here's my review of The Three-Body Problem from last week • The Three-Body Problem...

I DNF'd a book in high school over a minor inaccuracy. I picked it back up and it's my favorite book of all times. The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy guides my life now.

I usually DNF a book if I realize I'm not connecting to the characters, and am just skimming through. I've got a couple of books I ordered in 2020 that I thought were interesting, but by the time I got around to reading them, I wasn't interested anymore. They're still packed away downstairs, waiting for the day I unearth them again and read nonstop. I also had to force myself to read literary fiction for English class, and write papers on, but I doubt I'll EVER read Socrates or Homer ever again.

That's a really good point you bring up there...we go through phases and moods for reading, right? What we want to read in the summertime might be different from what we want to read during the holidays. What we got excited about reading back in our school days could be completely different from what we're reaching for when we get home from a long day at work these days. Moods and interests fluctuate. And that probably explains why I have so many books waiting on different TBR shelves...waiting for a specific mood to come back around. Thank you for sharing!
