PLEASE READ!
Firstly I am sorry for the quality of this video. This is my first video essay ever and I have learned so many things about editing a 40 minute video, writing and recording sound for a script, and gathering footage efficiently from doing this and def will be able to improve upon my videos in the future. My computer unfortunately wanted to d word while editing so I had to resort to downloading clips from KZbin rather than screen grabbing my own footage as a result.
Second, PLEASE watch the following videos in conjunction with your viewing of my own as they all tie together and will help you to understand my point of view more easily. They're also just great videos!
Queering Christmas at Pee-wee's Playhouse: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pnvTc2puasl-pJo
The Feud of Bette Davis and Joan Crawford: kzbin.info/www/bejne/ooi8eoZ7etFlmqs
Bob LIVE! With Cole Escola & Fhat!: kzbin.info/www/bejne/enrKlIiFiM-pfKc
I didn't mention this KZbin video in my own but it is also worth checking out,
The Season That Killed American Horror Story: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jJu6Y3WtftSHoas
Also huge shoutout to Ms. Mojo for putting together that list of dropped Glee plot lines so that I wouldn't have to lmao

ryan is great at beginning a show and building it up, but has no idea where to go after climax or how to end it.

Exactly, it's why after Asylum (which is when I started watching AHS in real time), I would always love the first episode of almost every season and get super hyped up for it and then get progressively disappointed from there

I love that he is often loyal to his actors, but he would definitely benefit from having a limited time or number of seasons for each project. To keep him and his audience interested and the quality high! ,

I still cant believe he made Finn go through a plotline involving the father of the character having a drug overdose after the actor had come out with his drug addiction problem before this... Disgusting.

I believe it’s also important to note the writing credits in season 1 vs season 2 of ACS. Ryan Murphy clearly had more creative control over Versace. This explains the jarring tonal shift.

Great essay! I think you hit on a lot of my problems with Murphy’s projects. On a related note, I’ve never been more disappointed than when Leslie Grossman’s AHS character didn’t turn out to be Mary Cherry in disguise. 😄

he can't finish a story. too many loose ends. character arcs going nowhere. and sloppy wrapup of stories. this is every season of his projects. also he RUINED AHS with the nonsensical connecting universe. leave the season as it is. it became a tangled mess just for fan service. he ruined pose cause he saw billy porter won an emmy and rewrote the show to be around his characters. all the character arcs set in season 1 went to the dumpster.

No literally. Like let it be what it supposed to be: an anthology series. Also I think that the show lost its usual emmy nomination when they began to start connecting seasons together (I think it started with Apocalypse?? I know freakshow connected back to asylum but what do I know 💀)

@@shineevelvet7067 THANK YOU. he ruined it so badly and it's silly fanservicing to just the very few AHS fans who were just theorycrafting.

Thank you so much for this video. I feel the same way. He has great ideas and great storytelling when it is precise and focused. This was the problem with all the seasons of AHS. Too many crazy ideas thrown out like food at the wall to see what sticks. Like in Season 2 Anne Frank, Season 1 Black Dahlia, Season 3 WitchHunter Society, Season 4 the whole ventriloquist arc, Season 5 the whole serial killer arc and so on.

an anthology has the right to feel like a different show every season in my opinion at least , i liked season two and i think the fact you found it not discussing any deeper issues as as an oversight . for example , i really liked the representation of homophobia in highly masculine forces such as the army which was portrayed through one of the victims stories and many more complex narratives .

Your right about season 2 of American Crime story. I could watch season 1 multiple times but season two was weird for me. One I’m a straight dude and every scene has gay all over it. Not that I have an issue with the main character being gay but it made it hard to watch. Also my dad walked in as I’m watching it and he’s just like wtf. Loved older seasons of AHS and wasn’t really into glee. I liked parts of Hollywood but it was like a 5 out of 10. I think Murphy got talent but hit or miss
@fromthehaven94

I think the "gay" stuff with ACS Versace came with the territory, though at times it was grandiose and/or lacked subtlety, depending on the episode. One of the victims served in the military under Don't Ask Don't Tell. And while it may have been embellished in the second, the authorities were primarily not quick to present relevant details. What I liked most about ACS Versace was how the storylines of Versace and the Killer were presented. Concurrently showing the killer's story mostly going backwards while Versace is shown during his life, from the alleged first meeting in San Francisco with the man who would later kill him.

This is a small issue but it bothered me so much when watching assassination of gianni versace that all the main italian characters were never shown speaking italian to each other. I always find it bizarre when this happens in tv and movies but it really pulls me out of the moment when characters who clearly speak another language are shown instead speaking english in thick accents. Am i supposed to believe that Donatella and Gianni Versace only spoke english to each other even in private? My frustration with this increased tenfold when they showed the flashback of young versace in school speaking english with a (in my opinion) terrible italian accent IN ITALY. it was very jarring and strange especially in a show that's supposed to be about real people. I wonder if hollywood thinks audiences won't read subtitles or something.

I agree with most of what you're saying, especially about AHS. I disagree about season 2 of ACS. Friends kept telling me to watch Versace. I had no interest in thinking about Cunannan. I finally fave in and loved it because it was about THE VICTIMS more than just about him. I loved Feud. I loved Versace. I am loving IMPEACHMENT. I loved Season 1 of AHS. The rest of the series seems just an excuse for gore with little plot. I think he has done a good job of diversity without making it feel forced. But lets face it, people will always want to see beautiful people.

There was a show similar in premise to Popular around the same time (or maybe earlier, like before 90210) with Barbara Eden where these two girls (Jennie garth and shawnee Smith, the girl from Becker). There parents I think met on a cruise ship or vacation, they married and the girls hated each other. The show didn't last long I don't think. But I was a fan. (I mean come on, Barbara Eden) 1989. Brand New Life. They didn't meet on a cruise ship, the mom was a waitress and the man was wealthy. But they must have went on a cruise or something, lol.

I just realized that most of my favorite shows/ films/ series I have watched in the past were produced by Ryan Murphy. Like my first series I ever got into was Nip Tuck and Glee. Then I really loved all the American crime stories especially the assassination of Versace. They were all so good! When I started getting hooked on AHS seasons I looked up the producer because I was like this producer is so talented. After looking Ryan up I wanted to see other films and other work he has done and found out almost ALL of my most favorite shows I have watched were produced by him. And I was so shocked because I had no clue. I am definitely a super fan and would watch anything he produces. He is so talented. ❤❤

Myrtle Snow...hey sue me I'm an Elder Queer Witch I soften at good representation...

@TommyStubbs
@TommyStubbs 3 жыл бұрын
I didn't give him credit for the trend, I said his show was inspired by parodying the teen film genre of the time and that parodying those films became a whole film genre in it of itself. Not saying he created that genre, just that absurdist humor and poking fun at those films was trendy during the time of his show Popular.

I never watched Popular, the show that is focused on early in this video, but the parody apparently was on a different level than Scary Movie/Not Another Teen Movie would be. And the Wayans Brothers didn't create parody movies. Scary Movie primarily parodies Scream and I Know What You Did Last Summer, not teen movies in general.
