I remember my Dad planting some of those purple potatoes about 30 years ago. Company sure got puzzled looks when my Mom sat blue mashed potatoes on the table. 😋 You and the girls planted a Patriotic potato patch, red, white (really yellow I suppose) and blue. Good Job! We canned a bunch of the smaller potatoes we got when I was a kid, just to make sure we had some in case they didn't last the winter. 😉

Once again, a family working together. Key word "work". This effort on the part of the family is something an entire generation of people could learn from. Your family must spend a lot of time talking about the value of effort. I try to tell people about your web-presence but too many people don't seem to care about watching other people who have your value system. It seems it is too easy to watch the television or play video games. Oh, to be young and vibrant again. I think if i was (young and vibrant), I'd be your neighbor and try to exert a tenth of the effort that your amazing family does, and I'd consider it an accomplishment. Such an amazing family. On those inevitable days when you have sons-in-law, I hope each of them also considers the value of effort and accomplishment as well; so that you have a generation of grand-babies that also value independence, through hard work and personal willpower. This nation is going to need people like that and sooner than we all think. May your clan thrive forever and be a positive influence to all generations to come.

FYI - I buy organic taters from the store and place them in a paper bag for a few days or so. Once I have the buds in the very least I then plant the taters with the most buds pointing up. Yep. I plant them whole. Believe it or not it works. I have even planted non-organic taters that had sprouted. Works great and it is a family tradition to plant the taters whole. I plant on St. Patrick's day here just as my grandmother once did. I'm of Irish decent and St. Patty's is what we call tater planting day. You are correct. Taters are tough. In fact I believe the worse you treat them the better off they are.

Yeah, we cut them as we planted them. Doesn't matter but we hilled them one year and covered the whole plot with black plastic another year. Don't remember if it made a difference other than less work (no weeding) with the plastic. You punch a small hole and pull the tater leaves out, leaving the taters under the plastic. That's in climate zone 6B.

Awesome family effort video! I was wanting to see how the potatoes grew & you showed it in this video! I always trench, run hose and water the trench, put compost in bottom of trench, place spuds & cover. So thats why i was curious how these would grow. They grew wonderfully! If u need to save space the rows could be closer together. I plant the rows 32" apart and they grow huge. Will be looking forward to the harvesting. Thats a lot of potatoes! I almost always cut my seed potatoes, I just make sure they have a week or two to "cure" and form a kind of skin over the cut area before planting. It just helps prevent rotting. This year, we didn't have time to cut/cure, so we just planted whole potatoes, I'm very curious to see what kind of yield we get and if I notice a difference or not.
@9252LIFE Жыл бұрын
Do you use any manure?
@WildOnesHomestead Жыл бұрын
@9252LIFE yes I have grown them in manure before! Honestly potatoes grow pretty well in just about anything, the biggest thing is to be consistent with the watering, especially with the drought stuff this year. You can end it with hollow bits on the insides otherwise and that always annoys me. 🤣

Please remember and don't keep growing your potatoes in the same ground, move them every two years or so and grow a top growing veg like Kale or Cabbage, or beans, you get the idea but every year before planting, feed the soil naturally with animal manure then every so many years rest the soil for two years, grow grass with clover great feed for your animal's, you are correct and I think your family already know home grown is the best taste ever, and the memories you make will stay with the girls for the rest of their lives.

Take grass clippings and cover the hills in each row. Will help keep moisture in the ground when it gets dry. I did mine twice with grass clippings and hilling with extra dirt. We had a dry June until the Derecho hit June 29th (got 4 inches of rain out of that wind storm!). So I would water the garden once a week. It got really hot here in July a week of 95*F to 103*F. Was worried that I did not have enough grass clippings on every hill. Taters Will bake in the ground if it gets too hot and your hills are bare dirt. I planted 104 hills on the full moon in April. ~3rd week in April here in W. IL.. I had many small potatoes left over from last year that had long sprouts like yours in the basement. All mine were yellow thin skin potatoes (forgot the name maybe Yukons). Depending on size 2-3 whole sprouted taters per hill. Just finished harvesting them today 8/18/23. My garden is 32 x 35 feet. 4 rows on the west side and 2 rows on the east side. Spaced 2 foot or so between rows. Ground slopes at about 5 degrees from high end east to low end west. Got 8 or 9 5 gallon buckets full of taters (lost count as It took me 2 weeks to harvest them ( rained and made ground too muddy for a week) and 3-2gallon buckets from test spots. Dug them up all by Tater fork, Lots of digging and bending for a 71 yr old gardener. :P Only weighed 2 of the 5gallon buckets. 1st one and 4th. 1st bucket was 22Lbs, 4th was 28 lbs. The last 5 weighed more than that 4th one. East side got more compost tilled in than the west side did. Used about 30% of my garden space on Taters. The rest was greenbeans, Peppers, Tomatoes, onions and beets. The deer ate all my beets! Now I'm curing them for storage. And handing out 5-10 lbs bags to neighbors and family. I got taters everywhere in the basement! I really need to build some tater boxes like Grandma had. Hope your harvest is Blessed like mine was. Enjoy your videos by the way. ;)
