The church-bell thing actually does make sense. Churches were often town centers, being able to hear the bells ringing means being a part of the core of that community. As a geographical unit of measurement, it's of course silly, but it's meant as a cultural marker, and in that sense actually is very sensible.

The only problem with using cockney slang to hide your crimes while talking is.. people knowing that you're trying to hide a crime using cockney slang.
@nathanmiller93813 жыл бұрын
I had always been under the impression that proper cockney rhyming slang worked on a set of rules which if you know then you can make any phrase you need. I am not certain. However I think the rule was, You take the sentence you want, And the word you want to obscure, Then you find a two word rhyme to match the sound of your choice word, And swap whichever word from those two made-up / unrelated words which specifically DOSNT rhyme with the word to be obscured, with the first chosen word. And that will give you your "Cockney rhyming slang". To use Lewis' example- "The Alan is jammed with paper" Alan, Is the out of place word, The rhyme key for that is Alan Minter, which rhymes with Printer. which of course Alan and Printer don't directly rhyme, but that's the key for it be deceptive
