ATTYA is originally a duet between a couple exchanging compliments. The last line is sung together. In the original vocal/piano sheet music that you also show in the video "he" sings the low version of the last two notes and "she" the high one. So both versions are valid. I personally like the octave displacement jump ("pivot") from the sixth of the key to the major seventh below.

Yes you can hear both of those lines in the clip in the video

I was lucky enough to study Jazz Harmony with Larry McKenna and he spent a considerable time correcting the Real Book. Great vid!

Excellent video Christian, I knew Round Midnight was coming! Perhaps the biggest jazz police alert is when the real book changes suggest that BOTH A sections finish on a minor chord. The chords in the second half of the bridge of the same tune could probably spam an entire video.

Thanks Jamie. I felt the Inception horn was fully warranted haha

The one I'm thinking about is Donna Lee... the changes people normally play are so different from the original recording. I'm especially irked by the use of a minor seventh chord at the start of the minor section, when my feeling is that it should always be a minor sixth chord; though I'm not dogmatic about it, I do feel that a minor seventh chord is unresolved. People are also so afraid to use a minor seventh with the perfect fifth as a ii chord in a minor key... I'm pretty sure the top voice of the piano voicings is a 6-7-8 in melodic minor. Lots of other interesting details too. I'll study it again and maybe put some clearer ideas into a pdf if you're interested.

And then we can discuss the original chords to Indiana (Bud Powell changed it.)

@@JazzGuitarScrapbook Indeed! I was just looking at that marvellous website you cited but couldn't find Indiana... great video as always btw. There's another website called Modern Guitar Harmony which is worth a look, perhaps I found it through one of your videos.

on the subject of diving into Monk's music: i assume you have already checked out Okazaki's recordings of all Monk's tunes. he takes an extremely abstract approach at times but the monk-ness remains even on solo guitar

Not ALL of them, but as an interpreter of Monk he’s certainly up there. Peter Bernstein as well of course.

Never mind the chords in Days of Wine and Roses… it’s pronounced Man(s)ini! He was born in America so, obviously, proper Italian pronunciation rules don’t apply! (Lights touch paper and retires). I am of course being sarcastic… assuming his parents got fed up correcting people and accepted the inevitable, it’s what my great-grandparents did when they came to the UK. Quando fuori di Roma…

If you listen to the original All the Things You Are from Very Warm For May the first chord in the bridge is in fact an A minor 7. I hate to say it but Barry was wrong about that one
