How did I vlog this gig? 1) Liz Maney is a kickass videographer I could afford to hire because of Patreon, and she filmed the concert footage. She's the apartment session's videographer, and she's badass. 2) Rockwood sells multi-tracks of gigs, and (thanks to Patreon) I could buy that at the end of the night to mix later. I'm trying to get the best audio possible on these gigs since, you know. It's music. Audio is important. 3) I have a GoPro attachment for my bass. It looks a little silly sometimes, but I love the angle that I get with it. I like moving angles, and it's an easy way to get a moving angle without an extra camera person. 4) Video editing is an insanely time-consuming process for me. I could have just cut up the best clips of the night and called it a video, but I want to tell a story, and that involves pouring through many hours of clips from rehearsal and the post-gig interview and figuring out not only what sounds good, but what tells the story I want to tell about the music we made in the order we made it. It honestly is something that I haven't seen other musicians do, so I'm kind of in uncharted waters here as far as documentary process goes. I'd like to see more people do it, but I understand why that hasn't quite happened yet...since it's so time-consuming! Thanks to Patreon, I can afford to spend my waking hours obsessing over these details. Basically, thank you people of Patreon. You make this content possible.

I'm in a shitty band where we play just for the fun of it, just for ourselves. And I have no delusions that I'm anything less than on the bottom rung of the musical ladder. But it blows my mind that pros can rehearse a song for 10 minutes (as a group) and nail it. I mean, I can run within a factor of two of the speed of Usain Bolt and I don't run at all, but when it comes to music ...

This woman critiqued about a hundred performances a day in various instruments and genres for 2 weeks and can just pick up all the set pieces and play them well enough to coach on. hey adam! question for your next Q+A: what is your process when reading music? do you focus on the rythm first or the melody? and do you perform the music by memory or just reading whats on the paper?
@lifeontheledgerlines83945 жыл бұрын
When sight reading, rhythm is everything. Especially in a group. If you're a accompanist sight-reading orchestral aria scores for an opera singer, you can't stop when you mess up a note. I mean, you could if you wanted the singer to get mad at you and trash your reputation, but point is, not everything will be perfect in reading, but the most important thing is to keep going. Also, Adam has lead sheets. Not sure if he's using his iPad this time or has literal paper. Anyways, hope that answered your questions - have a nice day!

Hi Adam, I have a question and I've searched a lot but couldn't reach anything so maybe you can help and I'll appreciate it. I'm trained as a pianist and I recognize notes fast when I hear them, so when I hear an orchestra playing, I can distinguish notes of the chords for most instruments ( piano, windpipes, etc ) but not so much with the strings ( when played arco ), so what I experience is that the sound of notes ( of the 1st violin, 2nd violin, 3rd violin, cello) merges in lucidity until the differences fade even when moving to another close chord in a close range and what I receive is the notes feelings ( just feelings) and moving to another chord is a shift in feelings, and then I work my mind on what notes could've been played, it's like auditory agnosia. and I should tell you that it is a beautiful experience because my brain is just processing feelings and not giving care for the math. so what is this phenomenon or effect called? and why strings in particular? and is it a technique? because rarely I've heard a piano piece making the same effect with the left hand and also rarely windpipes, but not as strings.

I'm a drummer from Spain and playing until 01:00 is very standard for that kind of gig, if not kind of early. Obviously that must be quite late in the USA. What time do people go to sleep over there on a night out? I play with a music ensemble and we do 4 hour gigs starting at around 00:00 so yeah, the title will probably incite some giggles from, at the very least, your fans from Spain.
