I know this was one of your worst days but we wouldn’t have met otherwise and meeting you all was one of the highlights of our trip north! 🥰 Also…at 08:10 when you passed us, was the closest I’ve come to running a ground on the ICW, the depth sounder said zero 😂 That section between Charleston and Georgetown is no joke!!

Great job figuring out where to anchor. It is a learned skill...sometimes by trial and error LOL. It may not feel like it, but you are doing every right!

Haha thanks… sometimes it’s a big learning experience like today, others it all goes according to plan. Thanks to your advice for anchoring in Georgetown, we did much better later!

@@SchoandJo aw! No kidding! I'm ironically headed from Ohio to Michigan to prep our F-32 Trojan for a late April Launch back to Ohio. If you guys need a dock spot in the Western Basin of Lake Erie let us know! Randy Patience Liam and our doggo Boone. Ps-Pearlz in West Ashley was my favorite!

Bull Creek near Charleston is a great place to visit. The shoals and shifty bottom sands do make for poor anchoring. Bull Island is a great place to stop, it's uninhabited and has an incredible beach.

I know everyone has opinions about anchors but you might want to consider spending the money on a Mantus anchor. We slept like babies with that anchor. It works well on any bottom except rock. Cuts right through grass. We'll never have any other Anchor again.
@SchoandJo3 жыл бұрын
Funny enough we actually just decided to invest in a mantus and sized up! We are super excited to give it a shot - glad its your recommendation as well!

I know this well past the time of this video but at time marker 6:08 your helm seems to be loose, you should check the nut under the center cap to see if the nut is coming loose. There should be a cotter pin in it to keep the nut from coming off but it may have been left off. Enjoy your videos. One day may be.

Thanks for the comment! You are 100% right, and actually, in a few videos, the wheel did come off as we were cruising... wish we had known the signs but all worked out!

I highly recommend a large danforth anchor. I've never really seen an anchor like the one you use but I've never had a danforth anchor lose it's hold on the bottom. Just drop it in let it your chain out then set it by bumping the boat in reverse until it grabs and holds against the power of the engine

You haven't done the ICW unless you've touched the bottom. I know this is months late but that flapping life vest belt around the chain when it was coming up up was scary. Tuck it in or cut cut it off! Loose clothes around the windless can be a real hazard. I'm enjoying your trials and tribulations, good luck and enjoy the adventure!
@SchoandJo3 жыл бұрын
Good call James - we'll look into that! As we've heard it said, you're a captain of the intracoastal once you've touched the bottom so 👨✈️👍

This video shows that you made a Great choice on choosing your boat. Having a single engine Trawler with a keel that protects the prop and rudder was a Great decision. You need to change out that anchor to feel safer you have lost confidence in the one you are using now. Thanks for the videos from a future looper.
@SchoandJo2 жыл бұрын
Right on point Donald! This was one of our key factors in picking this boat - it is great to learn. Very forgiving for new boaters!

I live in Colorado in the mountains and I've always wondered about something. When you run aground, could you use a heavy anchor and long rope and a winch to get unstuck? I have a land anchor on my jeep and use it when a tree isn't available. I went sailing in the Bahamas once and we ran aground and was thinking it might work with a long rope to get a good pull angle. A 15k winch for a truck isn't too expensive. I won't bug you guys anymore, I really like your channel
@SchoandJo2 жыл бұрын
I think that is definitely possible... There is a technique called kedging and I think people can use that to help get off the ground. Hopefully we never have to use it but I think the Chapmans book (which we have onbaord) talks about it. Sounds very similar to what you have with your Jeep!

Be carefull of your extra long strap on your life vest, if it gets in the chain, it would drag you into the windless. Otherwise, i am enjoying your voyage.

You will figure it out nobody is born with this knowledge we all have trial and error moments nobody got hurt and the boat is good so your fine

I dont know if anyone has pointed this out, but you should have your pfd fitted and the excess strap rolled and taped. Your tag end flopping around next to the operating windless had me feeling like I do when I watch somebody doing shit up high, like that horrible lower gut stuff. Obviously, even if it got wrapped around the chain there would be fail points on the pfd that would just tear it off you, and not take you with it (hopefully) but at best you could jam up your anchoring system, at worst you could get injured directly or be knocked off balance and suffer potential fall injury. I know you guys have gorrilla tape or duct tape on that rig. 2 min of your life and $0.07 of tape to eliminate a potential safety issue seems quick and cheap to me. I know how I sound, but I just hate watching that stuff, cause of that one in a million freak occurence that ends up as a cautionary clip on GMA, dont want that to be you guys, you seem cool enough, and the puppy force is strong with you, and you are literally beginning the dream life that I'll never have. I now plan on living it vicariously through you guys, so let's not take unwanted risks. (Makes it easier on you anyway, in my experience anyway, put on ur pfd, snug it to where you want it, back off an inch or 2 on each side, roll or fold the tag end, wrap that a time or two with tape. Now your still a little adjustable but your 90% fitted and no catch hazards flopping around in the wind. Just sayin) Anywhoozle enjoy every second, even the terrifying ones ("calm seas, do not a skilled sailor make"- er... Yoda?) If I ever play and win a lottery I'll be doing it myself one day and thereafter until I pass on, that's the dream. Best wishes, look forward to more from you guys. Rant complete.
