In case you browse the comments Vienna, a summary by someone who has played the 3 main games. Warning - Spoilers ahead, if you plan to play the others: You play as Kratos, a highly skilled (the best really) Spartan warrior that offered up his life in service to the original GoW, Ares (air-ease) in exchange for saving his life as he was moments from being slain in battle. Ares took him up on the offer by sending his weapon, the Blades of Chaos, to Kratos to use in his service to kill for him starting with the man about to kill Kratos. After slaughtering hundreds of soldiers and innocents over some time in the name of this god, Kratos eventually gets tricked into slaying his own wife and daughter. Kratos is enraged and curses Ares, vowing revenge. A priestess or shaman curses Kratos to wear his sin of murdering his family, so as their bodies were burned to ash, his skin takes on their ashes forever (originally he was tanned like in 300). Hence he is given the infamous nickname “Ghost of Sparta” after his white appearance. Many things happened but he is used as an agent of the Greek gods (his handler is Athena) to make up for his sins and eventually end his nightmares of his crimes, though they never confirm the latter, he only assumes. He eventually fulfilled his quest to obtain the power within Pandora’s box, as it’s impossible for humans to kill gods, with directions and assistance from the other gods on his quest. Upon opening it, he obtains the power to fight Ares and eventually, kill him. After completing his quest, he was then told they only promised forgiveness of his sins, not an end to the nightmares that plagued him for years. After trying to commit suicide in despair, he is rescued by Athena, who says while he may never forget, he has earned a place among the gods (his reward for years of service) as they also needed a new God of War, which he accepted. This is a summary of the first game. I’ll summarize the next two but more compressed: The second game, Kratos is too much of a warmonger and has armies slaughtering followers of the other gods in their cities, so they trick him into using a weapon that steals his godly power. After being gutted by Zeus and left for dead, he is saved by Gaia, a titan. Titans ruled before the gods were ever born, and Gaia herself saved and raised Zeus. He frees his brothers , Hades and Poseidon, from him father Kronos’ stomach (he ate his children to prevent a vision of his downfall at their hands) then fought against him and the other titans, even betrayed Gaia, and either killed them or enslaved them. So she seeks Kratos’ help in freeing those left to help fight Zeus for their own revenge (think like Disney’s Hercules) since he lost his power and can’t do it alone. Kratos managed to reaquire the weapons that stole his power as it still held it and was powerful enough to kill gods, fought Zeus, nearly succeeded in killing him but was stopped by Athena who was stabbed in his place. Zeus flees, while Kratos holds Athena in her final moments. She tells him that he is the son of Zeus, making him a demigod. Kratos is shocked by this news and doesn’t believe it at first but comes to terms with it quickly as Athena wouldn’t lie about it. She also tells him that inside Pandora’s box which he opened wasn’t just the power to kill Ares, but the worst fears of mankind, which manages to get hold of Zeus, making him corrupt and fear Kratos would kill him as he had his father Kronos. After she dies and her body dispersed into light particles, he manages to free the titans as promised. Zeus gathers all the gods to prepare for war and the game ends with Kratos atop Gaia as the titans begin scaling Mount Olympus. The third game starts as the last one ended, with the titans attacking Mount Olympus. Kratos immediately tries to attack Zeus, but gets pushed back by interference from the other gods and the titans fighting. Poseidon is holding Gaia with water serpents made by his power, halting their progress. Kratos tried to separate from her after clearing his own path, but she believes he is trying to help her. He tells her he only needed her to get to Zeus, she tells him his role is over, that she will kill Zeus, which Kratos doesn’t take too well, as he cuts off the free hand she’s using to climb so she manages to fall. He eventually gets knocked into Tartarus and meets the ghost of Athena, his former handler/sister. She helps him by empowering his weapon saying she wishes to stop Zeus but also wants to take his place, and guilts Kratos into agreeing to help since he’s gonna kill Zeus anyway and he owes her that for killing her. One by one, Kratos manages to slay every god he comes across: Hermes, Poseidon, Hades, Hercules (half brother, voiced by Kevin Sorbo who played in a live action Hercules show in the 90’s) Hephaestus (heh-fess-tuss) who helped him then betrayed him, Zeus’ wife Hera (I think it’s her name, been years), surprisingly not Aphrodite (half sister, left her feeling “alive,” banged her). Eventually manages to confront Zeus, kills him after an intense fight. He resurrected as a manifestation of all his hatred, fear, rage. Almost manages to kill Kratos, who manages to win because the power that he originally got from Pandora’s box was Hope, the only thing able to overcome it. Finally finished off the Zeus spectre. Athena comes to claim the light of hope as it was originally her power she used to seal the fear away. After grabbing his Olympus Sword, seemingly to re-kill Athena, he stabs himself, dispersing the light of hope to the rest of the people of Greece, who have been suffering as a result of their world being unstable (twisters over the ocean, no sunlight, monsters roam the skies, dying plant life, severe storms, flooding, etc) since the gods ruling the elements were slain. Athena removes the sword from his stomach, leaving Kratos to bleed out on what’s left of Olympus. After credits have rolled, the camera shows a blood trail leading away from where Kratos’ body was laying, over the edge of the cliff. It was believed for many years that he had enough strength to live through the stabbing, but was also some speculation he just threw himself off. Until God of War 4 was shown. I’ve cut a lot out to just summarize a bit of the beginning, middle, and more of the end, but overall only kept the main story that is still somewhat relevant to 4, since it touched upon some of it.

Well Vienna, Kratos is actually the God of War. Well, in universe anyway. Killed Ares and took his place in Olympus, then Zeus tried to kill him, and Kratos killed all of Olympus in turn.
