I'm happy to see the Wimbly Womblys back in action after all this time. On the other hand, I'm in a very similar position as the question writer, and John's discussion did nothing to help allay my fears that the world is getting worse and the guilt I have that my child (now 12) is going to inherit a hotter, more polluted, less friendly world. I can't abide feeling hope instead of despair simply because being hopeful feels better. I can't put credence in any religious point of view because religion needs to stay out of science and politics. My only faint hope would be if the younger generations revolt against most of what previous generations have built - using technology and global connections in a way never seen in history - to forge a better world.

Oh John, I wish anything of what you said about the climate crisis wasn't extremely optimistic. Wishful thinking would be more accurate. Right now, it looks like we're not going to stop the warming at 1,5 °C or even 2 °C. The commitments for reducing carbon emissions countries have made in the Paris Agreement would make the world warm by 3 °C compared to pre-industrial levels by 2100. That is, if they actually do what they say, which so far only a handful have done, and none of them are even major pollutors. Emissions are currently still rising. We can't afford despair, you're right, but so far we have done effectively nothing. In fact, most of the CO2 we released in the atmosphere we did while already knowing about climate change. There is still time to do things, but we need to act right now and we have to act with high impact. The most important thing you can do is put pressure on your government. We're currently already in the sixth mass extinction event and we're risking our own extinction. If you want to get involved with activists facing up to this uncomfortable reality, check out Extinction Rebellion.
@trombonegamer145 жыл бұрын
I support Extinction Rebellion, and I appreciate the sense of urgency. But saying we've done "effectively nothing" is both discouraging and rather disparaging to millions of people working against climate catastrophe. Just keep that in mind, solidarity and peace ✌️
@annamaria59135 жыл бұрын
@@trombonegamer14 Yeah, you're right about that. People have done amazing work over the years and I do appreciate that. What I meant by "effectively nothing" is that the emissions kept rising, so it unfortunately it hasn't been enough so far. I am also just so frustrated that so much time has already been lost so that's why I use such drastic words.
@thejerrymobile5 жыл бұрын
I’ve noticed that climate change deniers (or to be fair “those who refute anthropogenic climate change”) tend to be old enough that it won’t affect them significantly. This is in line with the “long slope to disaster” stance. We /aren’t/ good at solving long-range problems, and we have all sorts of reactions to them that aren’t constructive. Despair is indeed one of them.

John: "Coincidentally the system that benefits me and people like me is also definitely going to save us from the terrible destruction it itself has wrought. Why do I think that? Hope." - Colour me unconvinced.
@LikelyToBeEatenByAGrue5 жыл бұрын
It's the only system that can. Unless we all return to the forests as hunter-gatherers, we'll need to rely on innovation to carry us through.
@mattsgrungy5 жыл бұрын
@@LikelyToBeEatenByAGrue Well, if it's true that capitalism is our best hope then I humbly submit that we are fucked. This is the same system that brought us single use plastics, planned obsolescence, deep sea oil drilling, CFCs, and leaded fuel. And what? Now, its going to save us from the the very consequences of those creations? Of its own volition? Doesn't sound very likely does it?
@mattsgrungy5 жыл бұрын
@@LikelyToBeEatenByAGrue As an aside, if 7.5 billion people decided to all become hunter/gatherers we'd still be extremely fucked. I also would point out the false dichotomy between balls-out consumer capitalism and hunter/gatherer but I think you're already aware of it.
@LikelyToBeEatenByAGrue5 жыл бұрын
@@mattsgrungy it's also the system that's created new, more efficient solar panels and wind turbines, biodegradable plastics, outlawed CFCs and leaded fuels, etc. I'd say it's accelerated another problem it's in the process of solving.

I do not think we will be able to 'solve' global warming, I think it's probably too late. But that doesn't mean that the human race is at an end. There will be lots of disasters and flooding and horrible things, but it won't kill us nearly to the point of extinction or anything, nowhere close to that. But I think not having kids actually might be a good idea. Less people, less waste in the atmosphere and the oceans.
