On 1 April 1992, Labour Party leader Neil Kinnock held a campaign rally in Sheffield, just a week before that year's general election. The rally is remembered for striking an infamously triumphalist tone, with ostentatious pageantry and Kinnock's exclamation of "we're alright!" or "well alright" contrasting with Labour's surprise election defeat a week later. While Lord Kinnock today maintains that he said "well alright" and not the more commonly quoted "we're alright", he has in the years since conceded that the scale and choreography of the event portrayed a sense of complacency rather than the "modest competence" he had wished to get across.

Er nice myth but no basis in reality. Labour's private polling was already showing labour had fallen behind the Tories before this rally. Kinnock's peroration's in Sheffield had no impact on the election result

So the story goes anyway. It probably had a very limited impact. John Major was perceived as a much more moderate PM than Thatcher and this let him capture a lot of swing voter types. While still being Tory enough for the right-wing part of the electorate.

Not really. The effects of this were very much overplayed after the election and not really paid much attention to during the campaign. The polls just got it badly wrong and ultimately the public just didn't trust Labour or Kinnock.

This was Kinnock trying to be more than what he was.. If he hadn't done this, he would have been Prime Minister, but this made him come across as arrogant & out of touch. This is why Starmer is being so quiet, he knows that he must not do this

Popular myth that this cost labour the election - it didnt. It was already incredibly tight, and the UK media (especially the sun) tipped rhw result over the edge.
