My husband our two children and myself were so fortunate for live in Hawaii for 3 yrs. It was the best time of our lives. I miss it so much. My heart is always in Hawaii. My husband was in the military and we were there from 1995 to 1998. He passed away 3 yrs ago and I am still so heartbroken that he is gone. But watching things like this bring back so many great memories.

Love you guys, and I’m sure you meant nothing by it but please leave the wheelchair for those who need it. My husband is in a wheelchair and we have two little kids too so I know how it is but it’s important to show them it’s not a toy. it’s also often super hard to get access to the airport wheelchairs when connecting flights. makes for a challenging trip so please try to leave them be. ❤

They never really mention the bad parts of living in Hawaii like the cockroaches in every house you live in are everywhere no matter what you do, the highest prices on every and anything (you think the 48 main land states are inflated go to Hawaii or Alaska!!!!), the lack of housing available and lack of land for sale to even build a home on is practically impossible, the amount of time, gas, wear and tear on your vehicles to go to the supermarket or any store that isn’t a mom and pop store is 2 hours one way! The love of their friends is what draws them back constantly and the beach. They live close enough to California if they wanted to get to the waves. Their friends will always be friends and can visit as often as every one of them travel constantly. It think the children need to be close with their grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, family is everything and learning this when you are young instills morals and values of how a family unit works together like a village to help raise the young ones. Think about Sara and Derrick. When he had both knee surgeries and was down for weeks and that left a huge chunk of responsibilities onto Sara’s shoulders, but don’t fool yourselves. Without a shred of doubt family (especially Derrick’s) we’re right there helping with Derrick (esp. his father) and meals were being made and dropped off for the family to make it a bit easier on Sara. Tanner was there helping with Derrick whenever needed. The “village” of family members are what helped Sara stay sane and Derrick with depression was lifted when family visited and talked about things they were going to do once his leg had healed. Derrick should have forced himself to clean himself up daily. Washing himself up, brushing and flossing his teeth, brushing his hair, putting on fresh clothes daily, and making more of an effort to sit at different areas in the house instead of perching on the sofa the entire time. He could have sat at the kitchen island w/his leg propped up and helped peel veggies, or cut fruit up for Sunny so she won’t choke on them whole or trying to take large bites at once. Friends and weather are a nice comfort to have in your life but nothing beats quality time doing things with family while they are aging and won’t be around forever. You will miss having them close enough that you can drive to see them or set up lunch dates with them to talk about the ways their grandchildren are growing and exploring daily. They can always be counted upon to help babysit when emergencies arise (Derrick’s surgeries) and give you peace of mind knowing the children are somewhere they are loved beyond measure, comfortable being in their homes, are already set with toys and activities to keep them busy while learning through playing. Children learn a vast wealth knowledge when spending time with their grandparents. From infancy to the age of 5 is the largest time frame that they will learn and retain the largest amount of knowledge between these age frames. Their brains are like sponges and soak up what is being done or spoken about in their presence or directly to them. I was an early childhood elementary school teacher for 23 years and a lead teacher in a preschool when my 2 daughters were young and could go with me and attend for free. I learned a lifetime of valuable information during these course studies in college to gain the degrees I was seeking. I faithfully think and believe that all young girls and boys should have to take the course on the parts that explain how much your infant to 5 year old absorbs and you aren’t aware most of the time. Watching what you say or interact with others is viewed and mimicked by them. How you behave differently behind closed doors vs. when out in public the politeness often given to the other people you in counter or cashiers and how you treat and speak with them. Please, thank you, you’re welcome, anytime just call if you need help doing XYZ, doing things for elderly neighbors, or helping elderly people load their car with groceries by first asking if you can help them out by placing their groceries into their vehicle is seen through you child’s eyes as a positive and polite act of kindness that they will in turn do as they grow up.
