Hi Jason. You could possibly pack a large heavy duty garbage bag. Oh and nice to know you can also boil water in a plastic bottle. Just don't put the bottle in the open flame but rather close to the coal. Probably not very healthy but acceptable in an emergency. You can try it out for yourself. Best regards Chris

I like the idea of having backpack and a back up fanny pack for survival.

"Survive" what? No civilian has had to "purify" water in a "survival" situation in probably the last 150 years.

@papimaximus95 it's just in case. Anything can happen, things can change. I'm about preparedness. Don't want to be stuck in a situation I can't get out of. I make sure my car has camping gear and my home filled with essentials. I go fishing, hiking, hunting, clamming, camping, sometimes you need things to keep you warm fed and hydrated 🙏

@@healthy85 "I go fishing, hiking, hunting, clamming, camping, sometimes you need things to keep you warm fed and hydrated " Agreed! But those are NOT "survival" situations. Those are convenience/inconvenience situations. I hike as well and so my backpack has convenience, emergency and preparedness items for that event. Almost every "survival" kit/bag I see is really centered around some sort of living off the land which is really a fantasized camping trip.

Love this video! I've been carrying a sling bag for the last 4 years. I have taken crap from many guy friends and family, but I am not deterred! In a world where we all carry big cell phones, wallets,keys as well as many EDC items, we need to evolve our carry method to suit us. ✊🏿

I used to (20 years ago) pack a simple soft bag, kinda like the soft coolers now days. I worked construction and we would travel out an hour or so to a job. I sweat a lot. I wanted to have extra clothes, bandanas, snacks....whatever else I thought I'd need for the day. I called it my "murse".... a man purse! lol

Guitar picks are made of celluloid. Great to see Fanny/lumbar packs make a comeback. I used them all thru the 80’s, really like them, great for hikes or just a venture in the woods. Wear one in town if your a urbanite. Still have my first one I got in the early eighties from REI, just got it out of the attic the other day. Believe they are very practical. Just a few years ago my wife told me only sissy men used them😆

For shelter a 5x7 tarp often packs into a similar footprint as your mylar blanket. I have a mest tarp from bushcraft outfitters( now out of production) but it does as does the blue tarp walmart sold for several years. Also many guitar picks are celluloid but not all.. you have to verify what you are buying. Celluloid is a fast burning tinder also ,so make sure you are familiar with it before relying on it. Thanks for the video.

I always have a fanny pack. A small one with a few essentials in wintertime because my wintercoat has pockets. In summertime a larger one with everything inside. My go bag is a small backpack with an organizer pouch with more essentials among other things.
@colemandude
@colemandude 17 күн бұрын
If the sawyer filter freezes with water inside, the filtration membrane could rupture and no longer work. If you are going to use it during winter, make sure to pack it next to your body to keep it warm. If the filter ruptures there may be no indication of it being compromised.

A fanny pack never went out of style for me because they're just so handy. I use one for muzzle loader hunting instead of the shooting bag. I just pull it to my front and everything is right there.

“Yes Virginia, we’re all weirdos here.” 😂 I have my old army issue fanny pack that clipped onto my pistol belt and LBE, but I put a shoulder strap on it and made it into my possibilities bag for my black power rifle. For Christmas one of my girls gave me a new tactical bible case with a clip on button compass. I’m taking it to church in the morning and can’t wait to see how many people stare at it 😂

Celluloid is the material that guitar picks are made of. If you have some old 35mm film it's made of celluloid too. Tire chains help in mud and sand too and can be wrapped around a tree as an anchor point when making an emergency winch.

Great info. I carry a orange bandana for signaling (if I'm ever in that situation). A whistle? I like making survival kits also, from a old gas mask bag, to a fishing fanny pack & small clip on I keep in my truck. Never figured why they call them fanny packs when just about everyone wears them in front. Hope you can get back to WNC & work again with Rise Disaster Relief. Anyway Happy New Year to you & your family & keep them videos coming.

My go bag/get home bag, a haversack, was recently stolen from my car. It's been in my car for months, probably a year or more. Now it's gone. Had things like a nice leatherman, silky saw, grayl, mora eldris, ferro rod, survival blanket (the heavy kind, and one of the thin mylar ones), cordage, leather gloves, poncho etc. I wish it had been my $35 leatherman sidekick instead of my Leatherman Signal. You can see right there it's over $300 in replacement costs. So now it's gone, was stolen just a few days before Christmas, and I am really hesitant to replace it, if it's just going to be stolen again. A nice kitted out Jeep with a trailer, obviously set up for off-road and camping that was parked a few meters from my SUV had a window broken and their 2 go bag backpacks were stolen. I'm still bummed about it. But it's a great reminder that no matter what you have, if you can't protect it and keep it you've got nothing. Now I'm thinking about what I can have on my person all the time. "Everybody is gross and has AIDS"? You might, but I don't.

I do seem to remember that ping pong balls are made of the same cellulose material as them guitar plecky things, cut up in to pieces they make great fire extender material.
@unclest1nky
@unclest1nky 14 күн бұрын
From Google AI... Ping pong balls are made of plastic, usually Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS) plastic. The International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) changed the official material from celluloid to plastic in 2014 due to safety concerns. Celluloid is highly flammable. Before celluloid, ping pong balls were made from a variety of materials, including string, rubber, and even champagne corks. The change in material has affected the performance of ping pong balls. Plastic balls bounce higher and travel faster than celluloid balls, but they don't spin as much. This has led some players to change their playing style.

Creditable idea for southern or moderate climates. Those living in an oven-like desert or in snowy frozen mountains not so much. Few KZbin “survivalists” address those environments. Jason did a good one with his family some time ago. Most of these videos often forget the family traveling together, far from home in a variety of conditions.

You have a monster winter bag for expeditions, and you also admitted that backpacks can cramp your style. A big big contribution to that, in my experience is the hip straps -- it's a love/hate kinda thing. The modularity of a larger lumbar pack, as the outdoor elite call them, can be leveraged to address the issue. With smaller, denser items on the hip and off the shoulders, lighter and bulkier items can be carried in a modest, say 30L or smaller, shoulder carry. Top bag can be intermittently rested on the "shelf" formed by your fanny pack -- and some tents could even be strapped under or over the hip bag.

I had a go with one of them for cycling so I would have nothing on my back in the summer. Seemed to go well then I got off the bike in a town center. The sweat had all collected below the belt and I looked like I'd had an unfortunate accident, a substantial sized accident . Got a fair few looks until my shorts dried. Be aware of this possibility if you cycle!!!!!

I have a Helikon-Tex Foxtrot Kit Bag that I was using for day hikes in the heat of the Baja California summers. I figured it would be so much better than a backpack, and it was nice not having my back sweating under a backpack, but the exact same thing happened to me. My lower back and sacrum area was drenched with sweat which was wicking its way through my pants. Looked like I had peed my pants.

@@mickeycrawford121 Again, survive what? Your list is really for a glorified camping trip or some fantasy get home trek. My bags/packs are reality and mission driven. For instance, I do hike so I keep items for a day-hike and outdoor lunch. I also have a range bag that has critical items for on a remote range. I also have a "Go To" bag for those everyday needs due to convenience or inconvenience. I have no fantasy about finding myself in an unplanned emergency "survival" situation where I will need to start a fire or purify water.
@mickeycrawford121
@mickeycrawford121 16 күн бұрын
@@papimaximus95 my list is basic gear you need. the base to build a kit. you gotta start somewhere don't you? then you add whatever gear you need or want. no one said anything about a fantasy trek. or anyone hoping for a survival situation. it's being prepared for whatever you're planning to do. or for unplanned situations. just like your "mission" packs. with your reality mission packs, you're being prepared. you hike a somewhere and have lunch. you prepared a pack to hike and have lunch. is that all you have in that all you have in that pack, just lunch? and you have a "go to bag" for any unplanned emergency. seems to me you're doing exactly what this video is about.
@papimaximus95
@papimaximus95 16 күн бұрын
@@mickeycrawford121 " no one said anything about a fantasy trek. or anyone hoping for a survival situation" The title literally says "Survival Kit". Your list included a compass. That would indicate a fantasy trek using a compass and items from your "survival kit" to , uh, IDK...survive? Being reasonably prepared for actual circumstances is one thing. These "survival" bags/kits go beyond that and start entering fantasy land. Go check out my "Bug Out Bag" video to see what I pack.

This kit seems to me to "almost" duplicate what I have in my get home bag and to a lesser extent a miniature version of that kit that focuses mainly on health & Safety aspects with minimal shelter or sustenance needs other than access to water. I agree very much with your views on the button compass, but check it is a good one as some cheapies are rubbish. But no ammo, due to firearm bans in Oz (that I am very happy about).
