Tipping is for outstanding service. Not just because you work there.

I don't care what people think. From the beginning, I do not tip unless I am served by wait staff. Never have, never will.

This is why ppl should be paid a livable wage like in Europe.

People in Europe are paying as high as 50% of their income to taxes. It's not what you think. Plus these jobs were never meant to be "livable." Who originally held these jobs? Teenagers and young adults getting their feet wet to earn a little money and build a work ethic. It was never designed for you to raise a family off of. Starbucks can easily serve a 20 customers an hour in a shift. Lets take California for example with their $20 minimum. $20/hr + 20 customers per hour for a 7.5 hour shift for a group of 5 employees where every customer bought something worth $10 plus the 18% tip they're asking for, plus the tips are split evenly between the 5 employees equals $27.20 an hour, all for making coffee and microwaving a sandwich. The problem is they want what the big boys and girls got, but don't want to put in the time and effort to gain the skill to afford them the big boy and girl life. They want the bare minimum with huge rewards. This is the result of participation trophies.

The worst is when gratuity is included and takes away the whole point of the tip. But also why is it most countries don’t tip and service workers are able to live off that wage. Employers need to make it make sense.

The amount that some stylists charge, their tip is most definitely already included. I like to tip based on the experience, not just because.

I have absolutely no problem saying NO TIP at Starbucks especially since a grande latte is now $6.45. When I go to Starbucks now I pay with cash to avoid the annoyance. If I’m at a sit down restaurant of course I tip

This is why I pay with cash and I don't tip when I walk in a store to buy something. I serve as a nurse and no one tips me for saving lives. NOBODY CAN BULLY ME!

I tip only for service. It should be a choice to tip for good service and not to tip if it's poor service.

Why don't employers just give a live able wage?? Why do customers have to feel the brunt?

First off, listen to "WERE YOU RAISED BY WOLVES?" - a great podcast! Tamron makes a great point! In a bar, you're a little bathed in booze, but in a coffee shop, if you have to decide a tip when you're "pre-coffee" - which my family and I agree is the WORST time of day to ask ANYTHING of us - it's a WHOLE different story! That said, I always tip at a coffee bar too. Like Leah, I spent years in a service industry as a server in various types of restaurants and bars, working for much BELOW MINIMUM WAGE, which is legal in this country. Tips made all the difference. Look it up on the US government's wage charts. Servers in any type of restaurant can be paid as little as $2.42 per hour unless the state has a higher minimum wage for them. Imagine trying to live on that when you don't have other skills or enough education for a better job! Check out what your state pays and tip accordingly up to your ability, I say. But I've never seen a "pre-tip" screen so I agree, too, that it's daunting and awkward. I guess I don't go to places that use those screens. I usually pay cash anyway. AND LISTEN TO "WERE YOU RAISED BY WOLVES?" because it's a great, entertaining, fun podcast with important information about so many things we face in our lives! In Europe and many other parts of the world, tipping is not necessary or even seen as insulting. Often just the change left from the bill in Europe, if it's close to a Euro, is enough, or one or two Euros even on a bill of 30 is plenty BECAUSE RESTAURANT WORKERS GET PAID A LIVING WAGE all over, and have health insurance from the government (can buy private insurance to supplement it). That any employer charges customers an "insurance fee" or says that tips pay for health insurance in this country is scandalous. EMPLOYERS and OWNERS are raking in millions while they require their customers to pay employees to make up for the scanty wages they pay? There need to be some changes in our antiquated, unfair system.

You're right. People need to make money to live. But it is not my responsibility to compensate. Because the owner is not paying a higher salary.

We recently stopped at a circle K gas station to get a bag of ice. My dad came back to the car and said I paid for the ice and they had 15,18,20% on the screen for a tip. For purchasing a bag of ice..at a gas station?? That’s ridiculous 😮. I think the tipping culture has gone too far. They don’t tip in Japan btw…on a trip with the family recently we were so happy to pay exactly what was asked.

Women get called " unhinged, crazy, a loose canyon " when men or others feel insecure, uncomfortable you are getting attention for your work, strengths, multitasking most men admit they can't and that's OK, women want to bring open communication ,groups together as leader and referees, and think outside the box.then if you aren't called all those names as difficult, drama, then you labeled a follower, which is it? Woman can wear many hats, do different things as once managing, due to left brain, right brain operating.but all the talk about toxic masculinity, is offensive, masculinity is necessary in many roles.why do we all need labels. Just try to be a thoughtful self aware human, not everyone will like you, usually due to jeal8ousy, don't give it power.
