Interesting flight. I am a retired weather officer with the 53rd WRS, and had many flight hours in the real 5302 from 1998 to 2012. Flew everything from depressions up to and including cat 5s. A couple of notes: -- Storm penetration speed is 180 kts. -- We set the altimeter to 29.92 and keep it there. For our data collection mission, 10,000 ft is roughly the 700mb pressure surface, so by staying at that level we are providing consistent data to the forecasters at the Hurricane Center. As a result, in strong eyes we literally dive into the center, then climb back out as we are heading to the far side eyewall. -- We hunt the flight level wind circulation center. So we steer the plane to keep the winds coming from 90 degrees left of our track. Since hurricane winds rotate counterclockwise in the northern hemisphere, this keeps us flying towards the center of the storm. In big cat 5s, we can encounter winds in the eyewall equal to our airspeed, so the crab angle is huge. In the space of a few minutes we can go from almost 45 degrees crab left, to no crab as we pass through the center, to 45 degrees crab right as we hit the eyewall on the other side. -- The turbulence in the eyewall often isn't all that bad, with bumpy conditions for a couple of minutes each time through. However, there were a few times in my career when the plane shook so violently that I couldn't read my instruments for 15-30 seconds. During that time, we weren't flying the plane...we were waiting for the storm to give it back to us.

Sarasota Fl here, where it made landfall. That was a storm I don't wish anyone to ever go through, being in the center of the eye was weird. It went from 120 mph winds to nothing, no wind, no rain, it was very quiet and it was around 8:30ish and nobody had power, so it was dark as well. After about an hr the craziness started again but 120 mph winds going the opposite way.

lol, I’m one of the last people in the active duty USAF to operate a c130 gtc as a lowly A1C. We had exactly one in our section of 14 aircraft during the transition at Lrafb to C130J. Lrafb is where c130 pilots are born from all over the world. It was cool seeing birds from places like the Iraqi AF, many different ANG birds with their different tail flashes and such. I miss doing -1 on the c130 h1/2, things did however get way easier for us crew chiefs with the J model as far as maintenance goes. By my second month on the flight line on mid shift I could inspect them without the inspection work cards ( which is not allowed technically) but we ran like a well oiled machine on mid shift where the heavy maintenance predominately took place. My first ever maintenance action in the “real” Air Force was a brake job on a 130.

@GHQSTXX I'm a retired aerial reconnaissance weather officer (ARWO) who flew with the 53d from 1998 to 2012, including many flight hours in the real 5302. Nice job on the livery - it pretty much matches the real plane, including the mushroom satcom antenna on the top of the fuselage. The only thing I see missing is the SFMR pod outboard of 4 on the right wing. The squadron is in the process of repainting the aircraft to a lighter gray color, and the logo stripe is reverting to the older "WEATHER" in black script on a white background to reflect the fact that the squadron flies more than hurricanes - it also flies winter missions into developing nor'easters in the Atlantic and Atmospheric Rivers missions off the west coast.

Thunderstorm Penetration Speed is 65 kts above power off stall speed, not to exceed 180 kts.
@warrenmadden25862 ай бұрын
Retired Hurricane Hunter here - I can confirm that storm penetration speed is 180 kts. With the extreme gusts we can experience, we want the wing to stall before it exceeds structural limits. One side effect of this is that in big cat 5s where the top winds are close to equal to our airspeed, our crab angles get close to 45 degrees in the eyewalls.
