Welcome to Australia! I am originally from Edinburgh - came to Melbourne in 1961 as a teenager with my parents. I have been to the Blue Mountains a couple of times. We live at the foot of the Dandenong Ranges, eastern suburbs of Melbourne - mum said the reminded her of the Corstorphine hills in Edinburgh. I hope your holiday here is enjoyable.

Thanks George, my word you have been here a while, bet you have seen some changes. Jemma stayed in Corstorphine for a while and yes it sure is hilly. We will not make it to Melbourne on this trip, Australia is just too vast to cover on one trip so sticking to South East coast. Thanks for watching 👍💕

Hi Mike & Tricia, I worked with Jemma previously and it's great to see how things are going over in Australia (saying hi from a cold a rainy Edinburgh). I especially enjoyed the Cockatoo's on the balcony, that must be a quite the sight to see. Look forward to watching more of your adventures over there soon. Watch out for the magpies!

I just found your channel and become one of your subscribers. I’m Australian, my late husband was a Scot, he arrived here when he was 15 and I met him 4 years later, we had 40 happy years together. There’s plenty to see here if you have the time, I’ve travelled through all six states and there’s always something different to see. I look forward to watching more of your adventures.

Great video. So good to see visitors making the effort to not only walk across to the first of the The Three Sisters but also do the Grand Stairway at Wentworth Falls. Pity you didn't get to the bottom though. That is also spectacular.

I'm a local and while it's a great story, it's possible origins are another interesting story.. According to Dr Martin Thomas in The artificial horizon: imagining the Blue Mountains, the ‘aboriginal’ legend is pure fabrication created by a non-Aboriginal Katoomba local, Mel Ward, to add interest to a local landmark in the 1920’s and is unknown prior to that date.

I hate that they’ve been given the nickname, “bin chicken”. They’re amazing waterbirds that lived in the waterways west of Sydney and its huge suburban sprawl. Their proper name is Ibis, and they’re smart birds because during the long years of drought when the water ways dried up, the Ibis had to go in search of water in order to survive. They found water all around Sydney CBD as well as out in the suburbs, and since Aussies waste a lot of food, the Ibis discovered free lunches in all the rubbish bins. So see the Ibis as beautiful and smart.

A few years ago we went to Sydney and drove out to the Blue Mountains. What a fantastic place, incredible views. We visited the Three Sisters arriving a bit late in the afternoon, so we just had a quick stop and a couple of photos intending to go back the next day for a better look. That all went wrong, the next day there was a thick fog. Not only was the view out over the forest blocked out but the Three Sisters were hidden in the fog and couldn’t be seen from that viewing area because of the thick fog.

The Mountains make a great trip out of Sydney. Better to take a couple of days if you can, as you can get to some of the less well known areas. A quick tip - if you walk down to the bottom of the falls, or to a viewing point, you'll need to climb back up.

As you looked out from Echo Point at Katoomba over the Jamison Valley, hidden away by the hills in the valley to the left is Warragamba Dam which is where most of Sydney's water is stored. And the hills in the far distance hide the furthest south western areas of Sydney and the Hume Highway which takes you to Bowral, Canberra and Melbourne. Bowral is to the left of the furthest part of the valley you can see. In front of you was Mt Solitary which is a mesa. You missed the best bit of going to Wentwoth Falls! You didn't go right to the bottom and the walk along the valley towards Katoomba! Nor did you go the full distance of The Giant Staircase and the walk under the Three Sisters! So much to see in Katoomba! Make sure you go for a proper bushwalk as the spring flowers are out at the moment! There's flannel flowers which are a white daisy with petals that feel like flannel and have a wee green bit at the end of the petal. And look to see if you can see miniature ones too! There's banksia and grevilleas and lots of small flowers. Purple flag iris and Gymea lilies - they're red and on a gigantic stalk! The NSW Christmas Bush is currently in flower with white flowers. By Christmas there are red bracts left hence it's used to brighten our homes. But don't pick flowers in a National Park as you'll get a very large fine! The Illawarra Flame Tree is out with its bright red bell shaped flowers but no leaves. It's used as a street tree. There's also the yellow Silky Oak out. It's our tallest grevillea with long stem of gold flowers. These both contrast well with the purple Jacaranda which are native to South America. If you go to Manly Beach you will see Norfolk Island Pines planted along the walkway. In fact we plant them at most beaches in Australia. They are only found in the wild on Norfolk Island and were brought here fairly early after colonisation. They were also planted near the farmhouse so that it was easy to locate the house when the forest looks the same so you'll see them scattered around the suburbs. Then there's the She-Oak which is found along water courses and sometimes near the beach. They have pine like needles. Pick one up from the ground and twist it and you'll find it breaks off in little segments - easier to do with the brown ones!! Enjoy your visit to our gorgeous country! And make sure you put on sunscreen cos the sun really is much hotter here!! Plus you need to drink more water as our whole climate is so much drier than anywhere else!

@@MikeandTriciaOotnAboot it was a little frightening but a great day. I've noticed alot of upgrades since i left in 1991. That drop cage that goes down the side of a cliff? When i went on it there was no seat belts and you Had to hang onto the rusted cage above. There was an age limit or height restriction back then because you could fall to front of the cage and knock yourself out.

As a Blue Mountains resident, when I saw the cockatoos being hand fed on the balcony, I immediately thought about a time we had one come to our balcony. My partner was going to hand feed it but I told them not to. Cockatoos can badly damage homes if they get used to being hand fed. I know someone who lives in the upper Blue Mountains whose home had been destroyed by these birds after she stopped feeding them. Never a good idea to feed them.

@@MikeandTriciaOotnAboot Oh, I didn't realise that Wentworth pass was still closed, the landslide that killed or injured the British/Singaporean family on that track was quite a while ago. Note: they were on the track after it had been raining heavily for weeks, and the track had been closed a few days beforehand (because of the rock fall risk and track damage), and was due to be closed again a few days afterward.
