When I was 24 in 1987 I was travelling by Eurail around Europe. I had to get from Athens to London with 36 hours left on my three month rail pass, and my last twenty pounds in my pocket. I hadn't care or a worry in the world, because I had a plan and it couldn't possibly go wrong. When Holly was sailing her yacht , thousands of miles from home, with $80 left in her account for a moment I remembered what it was like to be young and I smiled.

I was 24 in 1987 also. Same age as you. Nothing has changed. I'm still that same person. In an older body but I don't care. I refuse to be old. I refuse to think old. I refuse to be wistful. About what? What you seem to miss about your youth is that sense of unencumbered freedom. But anybody at any age can feel unencumbered and free. It's a state of mind, not the quantity of years. I felt like that in 1987 and I feel like that right now.

Hey guys. 👋 wow lots of hard work going on. Just a little wisdom to pass on. I learned from a shipwright about the keel to hull connection with a bolt on balast. That is supposed to be a solid joint connection, due to the huge wheight and physics involved. The goal of the fix is to make it strong and leakfree. Any movement here is bad. Mostest important is to eliminate movement of the joint. So the only way to do it properly is to grind out a nice deep vee and push in as much thickend epoxy. This takes up the void eliminating keel movement. Thanks for sharing your most epic journey 😎

If you need to change the head gasket and only have an inch or less above it, that could be a challenge. Probably the biggest issue will be getting the head gasket from one side to the other without damaging it. All the head gaskets I used on my "Big" block V8 engines were made of copper, and did not like to be bent or flexed. If you are able to accomplish that you still need to get a torque wrench in there to insure that each bolt is tightened to factory specifications and in the proper tightening sequence. It is possible. Good luck! Nice video

aww the magnetic island montage was magical.. (blesse you Dan) maybe try to 'retorque' the cylinder head bolts before doing the head gasket.. if you do a head gasket/head bolt replacement, retorquing the head bolts after 20-30 hours would probably be good to do. cheers.

Great video! My (somewhat limited) experience with Bukh engines is that those cast iron heads will quite often crack between the valves. Hopefully it's just the gasket, but it's definitely worth getting the head looked at while it's off. You can't use sealant for a head gasket because the pressures are insane, it has to be a genuine Bukh head gasket. The surfaces have to be perfectly clean and the bolts done up to the correct torque or it will leak again. That's definitely what the oil leak at the back is from!

All good points. I have used sealant to stop leaks before on head gasget as it leaked from new and got worse over the years. No issues since, but I would say as a patch job only and dependsonthe size of the leak. As you pointed out, it is good practice to get to the bottom of the problem and fix it properly in the long run.
@RandomGreymaneАй бұрын
Depending on the design of the head, you can in theory get the cover off, get the bolts out, and slide the head horizontally very carefully. Then clean the gasket surfaces. You'll have to lift the head slightly to put it back in place so you dont damage the gasket. The big thing here is will the head bolts lift up enough to allow the head to move horizontally. Good luck!

head gasket... best thing is to replace the gasket, maybe have the head machined while its off, there is a "head gasket repair" in a bottle, but that stuff is hit or miss, and needs to stay in the cooling system, so it depends on whether you have a fresh water cooling or if you have a dual cooling system, i.e. of the coolant in the engine is permanent, and cooled by the sea water... both systems exist. overheating will cause the gasket to vacate the chat, it can also cause the head to warp... hence send it to a machine shop...

I've used the seadog solar panel clamps. They are fantastic! Strong and easy to adjust or remove. I had eight 100 watt panels on my boat and they easily held up to 100+ kmph winds. The only thing they didn't stand up to was me forgetting to lower the panel when leaving a pier and I crushed the panel in two and broke one of the two clamps. But I think at that amount of force I'd rather they break then my railing. I can't speak more glowingly of them.

With the boat has not been used for a while the stuffing box or should I say the rubber from the stuffing box sticks to the shaft it’s always important to burp the stuffing box before you turn the motor on. If you can make the water flow from moving it with your fingers, the shaft may be sliding when it goes in gear. Make sure the mounts are secure. Otherwise, love your progress and may very well end up seeing you in BVI as we head to USVI by then. Woo hoo!

Loved the slide show. Someday you’ll have proof for your kids that their mom was pretty dang cool. Regarding your head gasket, it’s really important to torque the head bolts to the right torque when you reinstall the head, so if the space limitations compromise your ability to use a torque wrench and get the bolts properly torqued, then there’s no point in try for a temporary repair using Permatex or something similar. Additionally, once you lift the head, you really need to clean the gasket seating surfaces and use a new gasket anyway. So that’s another argument against attempting something with Permatex. Hope you can get by until you can conveniently pull the engine out.

Hopefully it's just the head gasket, I don't know anything about marine engines, but I do know a little about auto engines. If the engine gets too hot it can warp the head itself and then you would need to remove the engine or just the head if possible, so it can be machined/planed, otherwise you'll never get a good seal on the gasket, and likely continue to have the same issues.

There is a lot of science that goes into solar, and a lot depends on if they are wired in parallel or series, but what I do know is that all the panels need to be the same size, if they are not, then all 3 will only work as if you have 3 of the smallest panel, so in your case you would only have 3 x 50w panels, so the equivalent of 150w, you would be better to just have the 2 x 100w panels, as that will charge your batteries better until you can afford a new 100w panel
@sails3538Ай бұрын
Yes.... Same size and adding a different voltage confuses the mppt controllers. Even 2 volt difference in panels makes a huge difference.
@WindHippieSailingАй бұрын
@@TheWhittleGreenVanUK interesting info. I'll look into that
@TheWhittleGreenVanUKАй бұрын
@WindHippieSailing it's the same as when you had the 2 x 50w and 2 x 20w, all 4 would have been acting as 20w, so you only had 80w, not the 140w you thought you had, so with just the 2 x 100w panels, you will effectively over double what you had before.

Dam if it is head gasket don't try gasket sealant because it can make the head fit back in place out of flat true. The surface has to be totally flat. Also can cause leaking of coolant as in water in to the cylinders easy way to check is see if the engine oil has gone grey or water in the oil. Sorry I did not see the part about your engine. But there are oil seals that degrade in time. Also if the oil is leaking from the top cover gasket or rocker cover Gasket that can look like head gasket leaking. Now if you are worried look at the exhaust smoke see if totally black That is injectors need cleaning but I doubt that is a problem. Also do an engine bolt check to make sure no bolts have worked them selves loose. Now there is a putty you can use in an emergency usually black they use it on exhausts pipes mainly but you can use it for any area of oil leaking clean the area push the putty over the area when the engine heats up the putty goes hard.

Hey. Im gussing someones beat me to it but..... Head gaskets A rather important part of making an engine go choof choof on a reliable basis. Theres bottles of "fix it" you can put in the coolant system but i do bot recoment them at all, they can block cooling passages in the engine as well as the heat exchanger causeing major issues. Im afraid youll have to bite the bullet and drip in a new head gasket. IF, i repeat IF you can find a MLS gasket for your engine go that way if not a standard gasket is fine. You need to remove the rocker cover (probably a new gasket for that), depending on your engines setup you night have to remove the injectors, glow plugs and possibly the cam and/or rockers) and ultimatly lift the head off. Youll need min of around 6 inches or 150mm but probaby more. Id strongly advise getting a grease monkey to guide you as it can be a technical repair if you need to disassemble cams and the like. On a car a head gaskey kit will run you 2-300 aussie dollaroos but being marine its probably more..... you might also be best to do timing chain/belt while your in there. Can usually be done in a few hrs but uou will need room above, either clear whatevers above (cockput floor??) Or pull the engine foreward into the saloon... Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but it is 100% a job thats best done priperly but youll be able to rely in that engine when you leave Oz as were kind of a way from anywhere for the most part
