Congratulations! It will be. A lot . Of work. But, the joys will be much more! Good luck! I had to chuckle, we are looking at buying a 160 acre tract in NW MT of timber land to build a homestead on. Friends keep asking what we will DO with 160 acres? I tell them, worst case will be that the timber land just continues to grow. We plan to live there, raise gardens and animals, use the timber to build our house and out buildings and any other infrastructure we need, also to build furniture for our use and to possibly sell. I laugh, WHAT will we do with the land? :) Blessings to you on your next path in this endeavor to provide for your family!

Welcome! We have some of the cleanest soils available anywhere. Because of our hills and valleys, huge agriculture hasn't been willing to farm (and contaminate) here as much. It's easier to find clean soil for organic growing, something I hope you will pursue.

With all those breweries, craft breweries, wineries in the new region, this is a good option for gaining post-mash for livestock and fowl feed. And if any of them have their own restaurants you also tie back in your goods with their restaurant menu for additional options.

I'm a new subscriber. I was raised near the area that you folks are moving too. Western PA is very beautiful country and a great place to raise kids and farm. I spent my early years about an hour east of Pittsburgh in a little town called Jeanette. We then moved to SW PA about an hour south of Pittsburg. A little College town called Waynesburg. It's spitting distance from WV. I get homesick from time to time as I still have relatives up there. But I don't miss the winters. We live in TX and due to health conditions, we don't get back to PA very often. But I'm sure that you will love the area and the folks. Sounds like you're moving near Somerset PA. Best of Luck on your move. Will be awaiting your vids on how things are going. God Bless

We arrived at the California border in 3 VW vans. One animals, one household goods, one a homemade freezer built to fit inside.We were only moving a small portion of our homestead, the original would continue a few more years with my sister and I would be on the new one. eventually the old homestead was sold because the waterfront was as valuable per front foot as what the whole farm cost in 1944. The California homestead was traded for the farm I am on now. It was nice to have oysters as one of the farm crops growing up.
@Homesteadyshow6 жыл бұрын
Hans Quistorff that’s amazing. What kind of animals did you bring?
@HansQuistorff6 жыл бұрын
2 milking Saanen does, 5 Peking ducks and some rabbits. Rhubarb and comfrey roots. The school house was at the junction of 4 mile square fields. We had a street light installed which collected all the crickets from the 4 square miles at night which fed the ducks. The summer heat was to much for the rabbits but they multiplied in the crawl space under the concrete school house. The girls room was the goat barn and the boys room was the milking parlor. The coat room was the feeder pigs pen.

One frustrating experience I've had when I move, is that it looks easy enough until you start packing. Turns out you had way more stuff than you thought. My earliest years were spent on a 38 acre farm about an hour outside of Annapolis, MD. Parents moved us (closest brother in age, me and mom/dad) to SW FL when I was 10. Have missed that lifestyle ever since. Met my husband there (he's from Worchester, MA, so yes..go PATS). We settled down in SW FL for 10 years and then ended up in NW GA. Wanted to get property there but parents talked Us into coming to there property in the Fl Panhandle about an hour above Panama city. Didn't work out for us, my parents are almost 80 and hard to live with or next to. So we bought 7.5 acres in the next town over and are Finally starting our Homesteading adventure. Had chickens for years, got about 40 now, 3 tky's, 2 ND goats, and 4 pigs. Sheep and dexters to come eventually. Good luck on your move. My grandpa mined out that way in his youth, beautiful area! You'll love it.

Just a tip from a packing pro: get a small tote for toys and put a few toys you want to take in the car in it. Then pack up the rest of the toys. Make this the first order of business and you'll skip tripping over and cleaning up toys as you pack the rest of the house

Hopefully your new land is already perimeter fenced & posted "No hunting/trespassing" - if there are loads of hunters around there, many don't pay attention to signs, I'd get orange vests for Luna and Ladybug because they are pretty much the same color as a deer... Your new land has been "ignored" for many years, so the soil is probably once again clean enough to be organic.
