30FT of car trailer behind a 1/2 truck? No way, but we all know the drivetrain is up to the task, so let's make the rest of it work. Josh bought this massive trailer this morning and is about to load it down, putting this rig well into the territory you'd want a 3/4 or 1 Ton truck for. To make this work we're going to add slide-on towing mirrors and Air Lift helper bags to the truck. This should help the suspension cope with the added load, and it's nice to be able to see around the trailer too!

Common Questions:
What motorcycle do I ride? A few. Ducati 1198, Honda Goldwing, Honda Grom, Honda Ruckus
What do I do for a living? Make KZbin videos.
Can you wheelie? No, I suck.
Are you fast? Sort of. I suck mostly though.
Where can I keep up with you off the bike?
Instagram: WatchJRGo
Facebook: WatchJRGo (or JRGo, FB hates my branding)
Do you go to school? College, for 2 classes.
Why do you ride so dangerously? What do mean? I was doing 25.
Do you go to the track? Of course, hopefully there will be videos in the future.
Do you play video games? No, but I might stream N64 Goldeneye at some point. Twitch: WatchJRGo
Are you afraid the police will watch your videos and arrest you? Something something evidence something something warrants and due process of law

Air bags are fine, but the weight distributing hitch is far more important to make sure you aren't over loading the weight carrying rating of the receiver. The proper way to set up a WD hitch is to measure the front wheel well height then adjust the hitch head height and rear facing angle so that when the bars are lifted and engaged the front wheels return to their unloaded height. Some squat in the rear suspension is acceptable, the main thing is to transfer torque through the frame back to the front wheels to maintain proper weight on the front tires for traction and steering.

Use the trailer jack to make the load levelers easier to get on. Lock the ball then raise the the jack until you can just put the bars on then lower the trailer. Sometimes you are almost raising the truck rear off the ground. Makes it way easier and safer to get those bars on and off.

To make installing or removing the load leveling bars easier, raise the trailer with the tongue attached to the ball. This will raise the truck and remove pressure off the bars. I have a similar system for my 30ft travel trailer, and doing this makes installing the bars much easier.

I know half ton trucks these days are rated to 9-10,000 lbs. But IMO if you are towing over 5000lbs on a semi regular basis(or live in the mountains) just buy a 3/4 ton truck. Bigger brakes, beefier trans that wont shit the bed before 100k miles, suspension that isnt being overtaxed. And Im gonna say buy a gasser in a 3/4 ton, cheaper fuel, cheaper price on the truck, mainly way cheaper to maintain(emissions era diesels have lots of expensive ways to break)

I have that same load leveling system for my camper and I found if you adjust the tongue jack so there is just a bit of lift on it the load leveling torsion bars go on WAY easier. It just takes a bit of playing to find the right amount. Also the anti sway portion does seem over tight but it will loosen as it ages.

Time to repeat the golden rule of pulling a trailer: Always, always always make sure your CG is AHEAD of the trailer axle. You need approx 10% of the trailers weight on the hitch in order to be stable. NEVER be lifting the hitch. Be safe, have fun.

You are obviously not under standing what I am saying. By adding air bags you will never increase the carrying capacity of your vehicle. By this I mean your tires and axle have a maximum carrying capacity. Adding air bags will only help with the comfort. For example. If you put 500lbs of sand bags in the bed of the truck for building your child a sandbox. The rear of the truck will sag. Causing you to actually lose a little bit of steering ability. Thus making it uncomfortable to drive. If you have air bags you can air them up so the rear does not sag and you will have a comfortable ride.

To make putting snapping the bars in place for the hitch easier....couple and lock on the ball, then crank it up about 3 inches. This takes some distance off the bars to the brackets. Then once locked in, lower the jack and it should be set. Way easier this way than trying to do it from the normal ball height.

I've only driven a little over 3 million miles. No one ever said you can't pull a big trailer with a 1/2 ton. What you will find, if you are in an emergency, is you can't STOP a 30 ft trailer with a 1/2 ton in near the distance you'll want to. If you can't afford a truck to do the job, maybe think of less toys ! I've seen this go bad way to many times over the years !

@peeprox1991
@peeprox1991 3 жыл бұрын
The opposite. If they're linked then the bag on the outside of the truck would compress and push all its air to the bag on the inside of the truck making body roll worse! Independent bags is best for stability. Connected bags would be great for articulation off road though..

@larrybe2900
@larrybe2900 3 жыл бұрын
What the truck you have is designed for is listed on the driver's door jam. There is a GVW which is the most the vehicle itself can legally weigh fully loaded. This includes occupants and what is in the bed of the truck. There is a GCVW (gross combined vehicle weight) the most the truck and trailer fully loaded can legally weigh. There can be consequences legally and civilly should the tags on the truck and trailer exceed the designed limit of the tow vehicle in case of an accident. Insurance may not cover and you may be deemed at fault even if not. That being said, beefing up the suspension to better handle what is being towed makes the tow vehicle safer to handle what is behind it.
