The PSA was meant for kids; no person above that age would think spherical oval shapes without any wrapping to be candy. Which is why it has a wacky sense of talking fabric pills warning the target audience (children) of the message, while also telling parents that could be watching to hide medicine in areas their children can't access. In short; the PSA appeals to kids, so have some silliness to entice them to pay attention to the actual meaning, as well as notify any viewing parents to hide the medicine away. Who knows? Maybe this PSA had a big impact and parents hide medicine effectively 40 years later.

1999, I was in kindergarten and I remember waking up from nap time and my classmate sitting next to me did not wake up. He had a pool of spit just running out his mouth and around his head on his desk. I remember just being really confused as to why he didn't wake up and why he had to go to the hospital. Years later I found out he would take his grandma's pills and suck off the sugar coating on them, and I'm talking all of them and that caused him to be hospitalized. Almost caused his own liver and kidneys to fail. Poor kid. Never saw this commercial, probably would've helped.

I wasn't taking anything for it, but I had listened to the original on-repeat about a week-and-a-half before this, and while I liked it a lot, I could tell something was a little off about it.
