I second a previous comment. I would recommend living in Bulgaria for you guys. They have snowy winters, log huts in mountains AND hot summers too! You could easily buy 2 to 3 properties (or more!) there to do up and then rent them to fund adventures / sailing etc. I think Sweden is expensive. Wherever you go, plan ahead and it's important to get proficient in the language.

I would hold fast on selling Talisman. The Baltic is a superb sailing location and from May onwards the southern Baltic is hot too. There are thousands of quaint little harbours which only smaller yachts will fit into without prior arrangements. Talisman would be perfect. Also don't forget that super canal through the heart of Sweden. Bring her back and then sail her to Sweden next summer.

No worries. Free Range Sailing has gone to farming in western Australia and shifted their video to homestead living and I believe they still have their sailboat. It's still a great channel. You can do something like that showing how you found a place to purchase and fit out. Lots of people would like to follow your journey. Don't think your subscribers to be short sighted. We'd love to see your adventure.♡

Great news about not selling! I love watching your videos, and for all the hard work and money spent on the boat, you are much better off keeping her just think how much it would cost if you wanted to buy another boat later and start all over. Looking forward to your next adventure on land and sea.

PS to below. After selling up, I headed to the hills of Wales and bought a Smallholding in the Middle of a Forest for Cash. I lived Off Grid There for over 30 years and got to grips with Sailing in the Irish Sea, and the South Wales Coast plus over to Ireland, etc. A Tough Bilge Keeled boat was really handy for round there. Bob. 👍🙂

Easier to sell to a Brit in Med, in Greece or Turkey than ti a British citizen in uk I’d say. Just for info we are in Turkey at the moment and friends sold their boat in 2 weeks and for almost double what they paid for it. Boats going for crazy prices in Turkey and getting residency is easy.

PPS. Something a bit important, if you end up buying somewhere in the Hills, and Hope to Grow Stuff. My place is a bit over 1,000 ft up for perspective. Friend and Neighbour's place I helped out, Humph, ex WW2 Royal Navy guy - last one on the Aircraft Carrier Ark Royal that went down close to Gibraltar (I think no Fatalities after being Torpedoed ). Humph's place was about 750 ft above Sea Level, and he had spent a lot of Money Planting a very large Orchard, but wasn't getting any Fruit. Turned out every variety of tree he had bought should only have been grown up to an altitude of under 300 ft. Hence No Fruit. just some of the little things that can turn around and Bite, and worth tucking away in the back of the mind as you never know when having come across that would be handy. Tip Chat with the Neighbours and find out what the families that have been living there for generations do successfully, and do the same. 🤔👍🙂
@ChasingCurrents2 жыл бұрын
Wow that's interesting. Makes a lot of sense to see what the neighbours are doing and chat to the locals! Also, your smallholding in Wales sounds like a dream - after 30 years you must have a lot of off grid wisdom😁 Cheers Bob! 👍

There can be nothing better than finding out that you're more liberated than you ever ever imagined! From Southsea to Sweden they said ! Would love to see you two on a Scandinavian journey. Your Talisman has (it seems) been good to you. Treat her well because she's yours until you really want to move on. It seems as though you're two happy, capable people who probably need to keep on Moving/Sailing/Laughing....for the while at least. I'll follow for sure.

Things change - that's really the only Constant. Beware though. Interest rates look set to to be going higher for a very long time, which means huge popping of all bubbles and one of the first victims is likely to be the Commercial and Domestic Property Market. I got caught when the Mortgage interest rates went up to 20% Ugh. Luckily it was for a Penthouse Flat and I ended up with people - Cash Buyers - fighting over it, so managed to Escape with over three times more money than I paid for it, this while Property prices were Crashing in the area, and luckily because Such Properties were Unobtainium. Right now, Things are in a Major State of Flux Globally, and if you have work lined up for the Winter and a bit longer, me, I'd put major purchase Plans on the Back Burner, and Work Work Work, stashing aside as much as you Can until Things start getting Much Clearer. I think there's a massive Collapse in Secondhand Boat Prices Coming, just like there was after 2008, a time when loads of Yachts in the USA were Scuttled because people couldn't sell them or afford the upkeep. One guy had lost everything, was stuck with a boat that had been worth 250,000 dollars, couldn't even afford to Moor, it so he gave it to the Harbour Master of where he had kept it, as a gift, because the guy had become a friend over the years, and he knew he had a mooring that came with the Job, but didn't have a boat at the time. So be extremely Careful guys, what's coming could be bigger than the 1929 Crash, and Great Depression, so Prepare for the Worst, while hoping for the Best. Me ? I've had some Silver Bullion put aside Ready for this, and it should be enough to take over someone's New Boat Construction slot that they've had to Cancel, so be in with a shout of getting the Boat I so badly need. But hey ho, Best Laid Plans of Mice and Men and all that. Best Wishes to All. Things could well turn out turning the entire World in a Newer and Much Better Direction, without any of those WEF idiots Wrecking things for us any longer. Bob. 👍🙂 eta major typo fixes. lol

Glad you're not selling up ⛵ Official visa type stuff can be a struggle in Sweden. You should look into and consider Bulgaria. Its a beautiful country and ridiculously cheap for property and living costs. Easy to become a Bulgarian and buy property. You'll pay no more than £200 in fees. Couple of weeks there and you'll want to move. I can't stand the UK. I've got half a dozen houses there, but my main home is a 7 bedroomed stone medieval house on 15 acres in the Balkan mountains and it cost me less than 10g. Another house on an acre cost me £600. Prices are rising... unfortunately for the Bulgarians, it'll become the new Spain. But my holiday rentals give me enough income to not have to work and I live mostly on my sailboat. Take care and God bless 💜
@ChasingCurrents2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, we were pretty much presuming we'd only be staying in Sweden 90 days at a time due to the Schengen restrictions. My uncle actually used to own a house in Bulgaria and I spent a lot of time there, I agree it's a great country and crazy cheap property! Your main home sounds incredible, and holiday rentals and mostly living on your sailboat sounds like a sweet setup too. Definitely given us some food for thought - thanks! All our best :D
@JayPerrypersonal2 жыл бұрын
Or do the Schengen shuffle like other British sailors need to do now, and other none European citizens do. Sail to Turkey, Croatia, Albania, Cyprus, Israel etc. Get the idea of rental income though. Why not charter Talisman when you are not using it?

@ChasingCurrents2 жыл бұрын
Cheers Matt :) It's actually a council house under the 'right to buy' scheme - rarer these days to find but a great opportunity with the house purchased for half the market value. Personally I'd be very wary of any "Heavily discounted property" in the UK. In that Sweden is an expensive country I'm sure there are good reasons why the cheap properties there are as cheap as they are. I agree with one of the other commentators here; rural Bulgaria is a place to look for cheap property and it's a relatively easy EU country to emigrate to. I'm going the other way. My house is currently on the market and I'm after a liveaboard. Best wishes for whatever you decide to do.
@ChasingCurrents2 жыл бұрын
It's a council property with a right to buy scheme, meaning it's able to be purchased for half the market value. We know lots of people living in Sweden having done the same as we're planning, houses in very rural areas of Sweden are notoriously cheap - as there is no work or facilities nearby. We aren't 100% set on location (it's more about the right 'setting') so happy to keep an open mind. Bulgaria is a great shout, my uncle owned a house there so we often holidayed - totally agree it's a great lesser known place to emigrate to for sure! Hope your liveaboard hunting goes well 😁Cheers
@cornishhh2 жыл бұрын
@@ChasingCurrents I'd completely forgotten about the right to buy as most council properties round here got bought up decades ago and very few are left. As you know the main problem with a liveaboard is actually finding somewhere that you can live on the boat, but luckily I've made myself known at a couple of places locally that take a limited number. Both told me that people tend to move on in winter (usually overseas) so that's when vacancies and boats become available. I'm more interested in being ashore because it's a lot easier and you've effectively got a very cheap waterside studio apartment, not to mention the added advantage of a community of people with similar interests. I'm looking at the property in Bulgaria route too as a possibility. "Our Derelict Dream" is a nice KZbin channel on this subject. What is Sweden like to emigrate to if you wanted?

Cheap houses up in the north, and lovely nature, close to the cost around Luleå is nice, otherwise my family have a cabin around Vemdalen, my self i live more in the middle of sweden very nice nature here aswell but the house prices are not to joke about around my area ^^

Be aware trying to get a "person-number" in Sweden can often take years, and the "co-ordination number", is often not accepted by utility companies,phone or banks.

Yes we have heard this, thankfully we have a few people we know who have done a similar thing so have their guidance too! Any other tips are welcomed though :) We aren't 100% set on Sweden, we're keeping an open mind. But it's so far the place we want to be the most 😅

@@ChasingCurrents I bought my first project house here more than 20 years ago, so have been through the entire process. Feel free to reach out if in need of an extra opinion. We soooo understand what you mean! The money does not grow on a tree and it is essential to create an opportunity which would allow a passive income to enable you to do what you want. Yes, bringing Talisman to the UK and perhaps trying selling her here is a wise move. Brexit messed so many things up! I think in a way we have a similar dream - in a perfect world we would love to have a boat and a house nearby, so we can jump from one to the other when we feel like. And that is the goal! Fingers crossed for you guys! And see you on the water or on land!

Thanks for the update guys. It’s your life so you do whatever you want, things change, especially with the mortgage interest situation in U.K. it make everyone think carefully. Sweden would be amazing, I hope you realise that dream. People talk of a housing price crash but I don’t see it yet as there is still a shortage of property on the market. If you are buying at a big discount then hopefully you will have a good investment. Personally, I am going through a divorce and that is changing my perspective on things. I want to sail in the higher latitudes and whilst I could do it in my Rival a bigger boat would probably be better. I think bringing Talisman back to the U.K. is a good call. Look forward to seeing how this goes so best of luck whatever you decide. Andy UK
@ChasingCurrents2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Andy. Yeah for sure, It's always been in the back of our mind that we have no 'stability' for if things go wrong. The opportunity sort of presented itself and we figured the way things are it would be a wise move! We've always dreamed of higher latitude sailing too, like you also figured it would be on a bigger boat. A whole new set of challenges, but would be such an epic sailing adventure. Appreciate your support as always, all our best :)
