I’ll repeat- how do you know how to farm? Garden? Were you both raised on farms? Was it both of you that wanted to live on a farm, sustainably or did one have to convince the other? I know you said kids are deliberately in the back ground, but how many do you have, age range? Are you both from BC? and were all ur kids born there? How long have you lived where u are now?

You’re always pausing over the beauty of your scenery, weather, a project in progress, having conversations with your family, taking delight in giving some love to all your animals, etc. no amount of “things to be done” makes you skip an opportunity to find joy and wonder. After our parents split up when we were little, we loved hearing mummy potter about the kitchen early, dark, winters’ mornings when we stayed at her freezing uncentral heated cottage. She’d be stoking the fire/aga and preparing each of our favourite breakfasts. It was so comforting hearing her; and allowed us to roll over back to our sweet waking dreams in our warm beds. The moment I heard your quiet voice at the beginning of this video it immediately reminded me of our dear mother all those years ago. My own daughter loves hearing me potter about early morning and wakening fully as the aromas of breakfast drift upstairs. ❤

Question: does anyone else in the family ever help cook meals? Dan? Do you ever have problems getting the kids to help around the house with the chores? I’m new here so I may have missed how many kids/family members you and Dan are feeding? I love large families and it intrigues me to know how much it takes to keep it all functioning smoothly! Thank you! Love your channel!!

Hi Chelsea & Dan - As always, it is a treat to see you go about your day on the farm. You are living the Canadian version of what my grandmother's life was like and also what mine was like as a child. It was a wonderful childhood that I hold dear. I'm 72, growing up in the 1950s in New England. We are now trying to bring back that " Down Home Americana", Norman Rockwell era. We three are the last of our 3rd generation working farm. I can understand folks not wanting to go through some of the challenging hardships that my father-in-law encountered. It was all work and not tempered by some of the more modern conveniences and latest farm equipment. Your lifestyle, like ours currently, reflects a balance between the old and the new. I refer to it as HYBRID FARMING, incorporating the BEST of 1935 and the BEST of 2022. This approach allows us "70- somethings" to keep on farming! This technique can also be applied to entry level farmers who are just starting out. Your children are so blessed to be brought up by loving, responsible parents, who want the good life. May you inspire others to follow your lead. ~ Diane

We've been looking at a 100 acre property with many hay fields this week but neither of us have every farmed. We fear that we'd be getting in way over our heads. But your concerns about hay availability and cost is making me rethink our position a bit (just a bit. lol) We're getting old to be getting started. The barter system is the best in my opinion. Let's all bring barter back! lol Can't wait for that cookbook! Congrats on the impressive growth of your subscriber base! I deeply respect your choice to keep your kids out of your videos.

I would 100% buy land with hay if you can! Especially if you plan to have livestock. Even if you don’t you could have a neighbour do it for you - it called crop sharing. Usually it’s a 40/60 split. You could sell your cut if you don’t have livestock. Feel free to email me if you want to talk more about it.❤️

I started up an indoor winter garden so I could have fresh lettuce and other greens over the winter. Everything is so expensive and this is an easy way for me to get fresh greens for very little. Highly recommended. I'm doing it hydroponically, but I'm sure it would be easy to set up a gutter system with soil too.

You are the sweetest! You are always so kind to your children when they interrupt! I was raised to be quiet unless spoken too or get a spanking. So I yelled a lot with my oldest 2 daughters but not with my youngest two because I didn't want to pass on that type of aggression to my kids anymore. I wish I understood the cause and effects of that type of parenting earlier. You are doing great and all your kids have manners! I love watching your channel!

Knowing you feel the most natural step would be to make all of us plate of your amazing food and sit dow for a meal, lends itself to reinforcing just how genuine and personable you are. It is so easy to know if I were to meet you at the store, you would be no different. For my Q&A, I would love to learn more about steam canning, how it works, what you can process in it and does it make some canning projects easier. Here in the states (I am in Iowa) there is an appliance company called Presto that has come up with electric pressure canner, and I am curious to try one. I follow Becky on Acre Homestead and she has one and swears by it’s simplicity and convenience. As always, I await my notification bell for your next video! Peace and blessings to you, your family, and all your followers!❤

Our 1200 pound round bale prices are $60 a piece. We are now in a drought here in Southeast Missouri, we have fattened out our cattle to sell to individuals for several years, but getting out of that now. We don’t know if we will be able to get a second cut off our hay or not. We have 200 head of cattle and about 500 acres, we row crop about half that. We also rent about 200 acres. Prayers to everyone in droughts.

My friend raised a steer for meat and when it was quite large one day his 11 year old daughter was in the field and the steer was attracted by her period, and began trying to mount her.She escaped over a gate, and when her dad got home from work he immediately backed up the loading truck, loaded the steer, and proceeded to shoot the steer and put it down in the bed of the truck! He then drove the steer directly to the butchers and was back home in time to eat a mildly late supper! We adopted this method when we handled wild hogs, as sometimes they broke out of trucks when they had their first contact with traffick, seem to work out alright!

That dinner does look yummy. One thing I have noticed when you plate food is the serving size. I do realize that so many times we tend to eat larger portions than we should, or at least that is true of most of my family and friends in the US. Many of the cooking channels that I watch, however, tend to lean toward very small serving sizes. For example, one meal that was supposed to feed a family of five (two adults and three kids aged 9-12) used one can of corn. I checked the label on a regular 15.5 oz size can of corn, and it stated it contained 3.5 1/2 cup servings. First of all, 3.5 servings will not feed a family of five, and having raised three kids, I can pretty much assure you that 1/2 cup of corn will not be enough for them. Back to my original point. I realize your kids have a wide age range, but most of them appear to be teenagers who, if they are like mine were, can definitely eat like they have a hollow leg as my grandmother used to say. Your serving sizes seem to be more in tune to what kids actually do need. All of this to say thank you for keeping it realistic. Your food is made from wholesome ingredients that, depending on where you live, are easily accessible, or at least a similar replacement. Not always fancy, but packed with nourishing ingredients and made with love.

Hello, I just bought a KitchenAid and found there is a screw you can turn up or down so you can make your bowl higher or lower. It is just behind where the bowl sits and apparently it's on all the models. That should help with the mixer not leaving any of the food on the bottom. I hope this helps.
