There's a simple logic that makes relocating to solve housing problems not an option for most people in these times. If somewhere is more affordable, and those places are few and far between in the UK, it's likely because the employment opportunities and general economic situation of that area mean it's most likely not somewhere worth relocating to. The UK isn't like the US where because of it's size different states/large areas have differing economies that are somewhat detached from each other. The UK is small and compact. London area asides, from top to bottom there isn't much difference in the economic situation and living costs between different parts of the country. In short if you're at a level where you're struggling in one part of the country it's more than likely you'll struggle just as much in another part.

I am originally from Canada ... does rent control no longer exist there?
@susango123 Жыл бұрын
@@anneroy4560 it depends on the province. I live in Ontario, and here rent control only applies to rental units that were built before November 15, 2018. So, any new builds have no rent control. So, many tenants have been scammed by landlords with huge rental increases after the yearly lease is up. Also, if a tenant moves out of a unit that does have rent control, the landlord can raise the rent to anything they want. Right now in Toronto, a one bedroom is anywhere from $2200-3000/a month. Unfortunately, long standing tenants are being evicted, because landlords have found a loophole in the tenant laws. One of them is taking back the unit for personal use or relatives moving in. The other is renovations where they want you to move out in hopes that the tenant doesn't know the laws on renovations, by getting them to sign an agreement to move out with zero compensation. The compensations are negotiating keys for cash deal or returning to the unit after renovations are complete at the same rental rate. Sorry, for the long explanation, but I wanted to be thorough in my answer to your question.

The fact that there is already an excessive amount of demand awaiting its absorption, despite how everyone is frightened and calling the crash, is another reason why it is less likely to occur that way. 2008 saw no one, at least not the broad public, making this forecast, as I'll explain below. The ownership rate was noted to have peaked in 2004 in the other comment. Having previously peaked in the second quarter of 2020, we are currently at the median level. I’ve seen rents for shared houses go up 50% or more in less than 3 months. A room I once lived in went from £550 in 2019 to £800 in 2023 (45% increase) I moved as it wasn’t a good place. The room had just one electrical socket and it was cold. The shower didn’t work properly. In my current house rents have gone up 18% over 4 years. My wages in that time have gone up 16%. I’m one of the lucky ones as my last 2 pay rises were above average. But it I had not moved my rent would be unaffordable. In 2010 my mum said she needed a certain salary to cover the basics - mortgage, bills, and food. Adjusted for inflation I earn more than that now and can’t afford to rent on my own. We are going backwards as a country. We need council homes for everyone again. Sadly thatcher made everyone believe council housing is for a certain type of person. We need to bring empty properties back into use and stop the rise of holiday let’s, Airbnb, and second homes. We also need to build more council homes and in private investment builds set a quota of 60% affordable and the test is a person who earns less than 70% of an areas median wage being able to afford it

you think that's the problem ??? I was living in london in 2010 and my landlords would raise the rent by 30 % every year ... THAT is the problem . Greed . For the people who paid back their mortgage , why should the rent be raised like that ! i live in Montreal now and the rent cannot be raised more than 3 % every year ... this is a society that cares about people not being homeless . Ps . Before talking about what illegal immigrants do to the UK please learn what the uk did to ... half of the world ... I am talking about looping . Including help looting / ' gave away to other people ' a country called Palestine ! this is the reason why I am a refugee because the British army forced my family out of their homes and their country WITHOUT ANY COMPENSATION ... not talking about India or South Africa ... or slavery . NO one is going to feel sorry for the UK and if one country cannot complain about immigration , it is the uk . you ILLEGALLY occupied half of the world and made billions of refugees .

This problem has been brought about almost entirely due to political dogma. The facts are these: 1) After WW2 Labour under Clem Attlee set about building Council Houses to give people bombed out of their homes by the Luftwaffe a safe, secure and affordable place to live. A few years later, when Harold MacMillan was the Tory Prime Minister, Council Houses were still being built - as they then were under Harold Wilson's Labour government. In other words, there was a CONCENSUS between both Labour and Conservative on such matters. 2) Fast foward to 1979 when Thatcher and Reagan came to power, and rather than continuing to build Council Houses, Thatcher sold them all off, forbindding councils to build any more. And John Major didn't build any either. 3) Property came to be seen as an investment, rather than a place to live, and prices have been rising steeply ever since. Where once an average property was only 3.5 times the average wage, now properties are 9.4 times the average wage. No wonder first time buyers are finding it all but impossible to buy a property. 4) Then in 1997 'New Labour' under Blair came to power - and Blair didn't build any more Council Houses either. And peroperty prices continued to rise. 5) The we come to the Tories, first Cameron and Osborne with their austerity measures, which continued with May, then Johnson, the Truss, and now Sunak - and of course, *they* haven't built any Council Houses either. And of course properties have continued to rise in price ever higher. Sadly, it doesn't look as though a future Labour government under Starmer are going to build Council Houses either. What the UK desperately needs is a progressive government which goes back to the Mixed Economy model and abandons this rotten 'Free Market Capitalism (Neoliberalism) which has been followed by all governments since Thatcher.

How do you do that, without becoming totalitarian? If you mandate housing/welfare etc beyond what it currently is, you're engaging in tyranny. In order to do that, you must take from others by force .. which means violence .. which means tyranny.

With or without a job, if you are childless you will get zero help from your local govt. Families and refugees are priority only. And dont expect any advice - they are too busy helping Ukranians. Funny how all these rooms and granny flats and houses etc suddenly were made available for Ukranians but British citizens were left homelss. But this housing crisis is not new. And the law to stop Section 21 no fault evictions has been gathering dust for more than 2 years. Politicians don't push it forward because they and their friends are all landlords who don't want a sitting tenant.....

🚩Have you all noticed how the richer countries such as America, England, Australia, New Zealand and France etc had stopped building social housing before the pandemic happened and now these countries have 'working class homeless people'. The wages don't go up but food, petrol, rents, transport fares, electricity, gas etc etc go up on a weekly basis. Let us get honest here, this is planned...this is no accident or fault of the pandemic. Social housing is being sold to investors and no new social housing is being built. Migrants are flooding in to these countries when they already have a housing crisis. Landlords have become greedy beyond belief and there is a rise in slumlords. The rents keep rising but there is bare to no maintenance done in these private rentals. It's getting very close to Anarchy cos noone is controling the unfair prices on things. Something's got to give and it wont be pretty.

Yes it is. Which is why it's so hard to understand those who are working or middle class, who choose to rent. What do they think is going to happen when they retire? Seriously? How can anyone go through an entire adult life, never once thinking about how they'll survive on a pension?

42% of Universal Credit claimants are in work poor! Basic living costs have risen and risen. Housing, food, energy etc all becoming increasingly difficult to afford 1 in 3 disabled people already trapped in poverty, dwp admitted "major unmet needs" among disabled claimants BEFORE cost of living crisis but nothing has changed 26% of adult population having to provide unpaid care to someone, 2 in 5 have to give up work to care for someone Carers Allowance is just £76.75 per week for 35hrs minimum care and is deducted from UC amount

First and foremost they need to stop letting people buy their council / social housings. When the tenant passes away then the same housing can be used for another person for affordable living. But they let you buy then the people sells them for profit. So ofcourse, the social housings are going to be less and less available.

On the contrary .. the best social housing model in the world, does exactly that. The govt builds the housing, and SELLS it to citizens at cost price. The old model .. subsidised housing, just entrenches poverty. It's a huge waste of money, and fixes nothing. It actually makes things worse.
