The vocals are really good. So what Deena came out of her normal quiet shell. It all adds for a big delivery of a great song. Choreography, well, uh, overly done but te vocals are spot on.

I think Brennyn’s singing is good. Solid but not too strong and not churchy. I think the key to the contrast of Effie and Deena isn’t just the strength but the style of the two voices. Brennyn sounds nothing like Moya which helps account for the switch Curtis makes. Deena is pop accessible, whereas Effie is homegrown soul, unchangeable. I think it works here.

Yeah a lil overchoreographed, but it’s Casey Nicholaw (the director), and ALL of his shows are overchoreographed, but to me it still comes off very clean, which is key for this show especially

Why Deena singing down like that? Lmao. I often said Bey (as hard as she tried to limit herself vocally for the role) oversung as Deena and all of the other Deenas that followed are doing the same. Deena ain't supposed to be belting and transitioning like that. Sang though sis.

Deena is supposed to have a softer voice and I'm getting nothing but belt from Brennyn. It really hurts the story when Effie & Deena have similar voices. The entire point of Deena becoming lead is because she has a lighter quality to her voice. The best vocal differences I've seen in Effie's and Deena's are 1) Jennifer Holliday and Sheryl Lee Raph 2) Lillias White and Audra McDonald 3) Jennifer Hudson and Beyonce Effie and Deena (Even Lorrell) are all supposed to have different voices. It just hurts the show overall when they all sound the same

And you're being super critical...and incorrect. Clearly anyone with an ear for music can see both of these ladies have voices that sound different. The main difference between the likes of Brennan and Sheryl is that Brennyn has a stronger voice (Sheryl knows she's not a singer herself)

I flew to NY to see the original Broadway production. It was sublime. Disliked the movie and how they turned it into the Beyoncé show. After NY (on the same trip) I went to see the production because it had just opened in LA and JENNIFER HOLLIDAY had transferred to join the cast. The lead in the LA production LINDA LELANI-BROWN was even better than SHERYL LEE RALPH who was the original DEENA JONES.

@Jordano Berrios I've studied, dissected, directed, choreographed and costumed this show multiple times. This does not work for the storyline at all. If Deena is that powerful outside of image, Effie could have remained in lead. Curtis spoke of glamorizing them, hence why the Dreamgirls song is all about Glamour and poise.... A step up from recent numbers like Move, Steppin, and Fake your way to the top. Like I said there concept doesn't work.... None of the revivals in the past 15years have worked.
