Currently riding 150-155mm cranks on my bikes. Tried a few months at 140mm and that felt just a hair too short. Seated pedaling felt OK but required an easier gearing. Something about standing pedaling just felt "off" in a way that I couldn't quite get used to. The Goldix and Cruz cranks on Aliexpress are really great for trying out different lengths. In terms of standards: Shimano spindle means only needing a single bearing size for the bottom bracket. Sram direct mount has a bit wider support for chain rings. Chainring is usually on the non-removable side for greater strength.

@@azamwaugh Presumably they'd be OK, but I usually run with a 0mm offset chainring to give more clearance for larger plus tires. Might not be 100% optimal chainline, but I haven't noticed any issues with shifting.

i unicycle and we do a lot of different crank lengths because of the lack of gearing options. I’ve ridden cranks as short as 45mm. i don’t think there’s much biomechanically wrong with anything longer than around 125mm, but as you go shorter the disadvantages start to get really apparent. I think there’s little advantage unless you pair them with equal bb drop changes on a bike though.

I switched from 165mm to 150mm crank last year on my ebike. I have nothing but great things to say about it. Less pedal strike on the uphill and technical trail, which help keeping momentum on tricky situation. Also, it's easier to spin to higher cadence, where my EP8 love to be. I've not notice any range/speed difference on the uphill. I'm 6'3'' and it doesn't feel weird, simply different, it's only 10% difference after all... not 35% like the 110mm

Well, like it or not, Mountain biking borrowed (stole) small sprockets from BMX (which pushed it beyond with the 8 and 9 tooth drivers, which honestly are a terrible idea, snapped chains, mulched bearings etc) and now you've brought Mountain biking the 0mm cranks. Well, If you go back in the annuls of Flatland BMX, there was a rider who replaced his cranks with PEGS making a 6 peg beast, which made sense at the time as lots of flatlanders never really pedaled or had pedaling in their tricks, many do now like upsidedown bike pedaling, although most are on freecoasters which makes riding fakie no longer give pedal pressure like a cassette so rolling backwards doesnt require backwards pedaling. I think theres also history of a 6 peg BMXer doing the mod for grinding, which requires entirely different pegs (no knurling, strong enough for grinds) and a different BMX. Cheers for thinking up a goofy take on this odd trend. I prefer long cranks, as when I ride BMX street I can tell the difference, especially due to the 30/9 66.6 gear ratio I run for more speed but slower harder pedaling, she dont climb but she goes fast. I can feel the leverage better as I've ridden shorter cranks on BMX too. I'll be sticking with the stock cranks on my enduro too, I just dont see a benefit to short cranks unless you dont want to learn how to not pedal strike, I prefer hopping off my bike if terrain gets too tech for me to keep pedaling while climbing than to smash my pedals on rocks or whatever, sometimes I can get away with lightly coasting if I time the power stroke good but otherwise no shame in hoppin off and walkin a bit till theres a spot you can get back on again, F climbing anyways, I'm not no XC climber, I just wanna go fast downhill but dont have lift access at my local trail (nanaimo BC) Theres also lots of unlisted trails that may or maynot be for bikes that I just explore anyways, if I gotta hike a bike for half an hour so be it lol.

Weird? I've fot some weird for you. I was about to move to Colorado, I had already purchased a Levo and was tooling around the flat lands of the south east and was bored out of my mind and not learning anything about the bike handling I would need to keep up with my Colorado friends who were already quite good. I switched up and bought a dirt bike one size larger than a pit bike. It was a "big wheel" Yamaha TTR125. Weighs about 200 lbs and I do too. Being so small just shifting your weight from one peg to the other you can make it veer crazily to the side, bias front to back was super key, and I could finally move at a speed that was challenging, and I hammered around all the local trails, powerlines, and back roads for months, and then I moved. Heres the cool part. I was used to fat man on a little bike squishy suspension and not having to peddle, so without having to set up firmer suspension for all around peddling and riding being that it's and E, I also set up the Levo on the soft side, and discovered that I could dropper to the lowest point, sit down and rail flow trails and even some small jank because, well, thats what I was used to. When it came to big chunk the weight and softness helps even more. Following friends, they were standing in a lot of places where I was sitting, they had to slow down more for corners that I could carry more speed, and I was used to having manage bias on pegs very close together so corner bike lean became super important. Going from a 200lb bike with a 21" front tire to a 50lb bike with a 29" front tire was like going from construction boots to running shoes. Who knew, it was awesomely weird counter intuitive training and it catapulted me into being comfortable with insane speed, weight, etc in my new hard core environment.
