In 1984, the NBA abolished the free throw, instead awarding automatic points. Somewhere in New Jersey, 12-year-old Shaquille O'Neal's heart began beating faster, and he didn't yet know why.

@@Capybara_ProductionsShaq was basically unstoppable on offense, with 1 major exception: he could not hit free throws at all. It was smarter from an "expected points" perspective to foul Shaq every time he would shoot, rather than let him easily dunk it over every other human being on the planet. If he automatically got the points instead of having to shoot free throws, Shaq is probably the best player of all time by a big margin.

I have good authority on me that this was the result of a vital oversight. If you were to check out Prospect MJ's attributes in 'Edit Player', you'll notice in the Vitals section that his 'Peak Start' and 'Peak End' ages are (and I swear I'm not making this up) 23 and 25 respectively. Yes, in the game he was destined to be in decline after the ripe-old age of 25. I don't know if this was changed in a later update or something (I'm too lazy to go back and check), but it has been changed in 2K24, where the start of MJ's peak is at 25 YO and the end is at 31 YO.

Apparently it was used for the 2020 All Star game, and has been adopted for the G League's overtime, and players really like it. I wouldn't mind it, at least for overtime. 5 minutes does seem kinda cramped. Makes the tip off really important. A target score, making sure every game ends in a walkoff, sounds fun.
@RCPlanes59
@RCPlanes59 11 ай бұрын
@@GatsbyCioffi I'm familiar with the Elam Ending but I've never really thought about basketball without a shot clock as anything but worthless because of the "hold the ball until 0:02 no matter what time it is" strategy. But if there's no clock, it suddenly becomes more of a chess match than a game of speed where you truly appreciate every finer detail, especially in a culture where football is king. Or maybe it'd be boring, who's to know?

@@cliptomaniac2562 True, but he did have arguably one of his more impressive playoff series with an out of prime Pippen: In 1988's first round, Pippen was a rookie (not that he didn't make valuable contributions, but safe to argue that he wasn't at his prime instantly), and MJ averaged 45 per game on 56% from the field and I believe 63% true shooting against Cleveland (a team that had no Hall of Famers, but was a top five defense that year). That's impressive and overlooked in my opinion.

I don’t think the NBA is too worried about money right now. The RSN situation is bad, but I think it’ll mostly get figured out in the next few years and the current model will be mostly extinct. Regardless, they’re about to negotiate an obscene TV deal. That’s why it’s so funny to me when I see ppl overreact to every big contract being signed now. The mid level exception is gonna be nearing $20M by 2029-2030. It’s just gonna be craziness. I lowkey wish they didn’t agree to smooth the cap just for the chaos factor. It’d be hilarious if the cap went from like 142-144M in 24-25 to 180-185M in 25-26 😂. Some of the funniest things happened due to not smoothing the last TV deal.

"Players in the lottery tournament don't have an incentive" Every player on a losing team is playing for his job. It's one of the unwritten rules of sports. Their incentive is to put good things on tape.
@RyTrapp0
@RyTrapp0 11 ай бұрын
Eh, that sounds great - but, let's be real, no one would care about the tape from the draft games, it'd be about all the actual tape that players already have out there. Even if players 'gave a damn' about those games, they're still not going to take real risks in them or anything. I mean, injuring multiple players for just #1 overall pick... probably not an ideal strategy. I'd expect just a little more 'give a damn' than all-star games.

I’m so excited for more of this series!! I especially think the lottery team tournament is interesting, and the mysterious MJ fall off is a good prompt for some storyline… 👁️👁️

The scoring dip from no shot clock to the 30 second clock is really interesting. My guess is the AI is reacting to the shot clock by running more stallball to get to the shot clock expiring vs. just freeflowing without it.

25:17 - So I remember the anachronistically-high rookie deals thing being an issue that was actually patched within a month of 2K23's release, but I guess the 2K never thought to extend it to when the salary cap & luxury tax are disabled. Whoops!

I created an HBCU dynasty in 1983, Hakeem Olujwon retired in 2006 and i drafted him with the 2nd pick. And i won 5 championships with him. He is better than Jordan in this game. I had to take a screenshot of that lol and i was thinking of cutting him 5 years prior but he lasted. I also realized it seems like they give some players kids. I did some research like i drafted Dennis Rodman Jr in 2001. And maybe its a name generator coincidence

When Secret Base uploads on your birthday, it’s always fun! Question I have that would make my day if Secret Base answered it: I really enjoy listening to the background music that you use in your videos, and out of curiosity what music tracks were the background for most of the Adam Dunn Dorktown video from 2018 or so? And which music track was the first track at the very beginning of the Golf course Fumble dimension? I have wanted to hear both tracks clean for years, haven’t found either one, and neither of those videos list the music in them anywhere to my knowledge (if they do, feel free to let me know). Any event, cheers to a new Fumble Dimension!
