On our last day in North Dakota we decided to try hunting some big water for the divers and mallards that had stuck around the area. We threw out our entire spread on a large point and before long we had birds trading through the decoys. It ended up being an incredible mixed bag hunt but unfortunately we had unknowingly broken the law during it and had to deal with the consequences when the game warden showed up. Hope you enjoy!

If you make a mistake it's best to just own up to it exactly like you did. My younger cousin went whitetail deer hunting for the first time and shot an illegal buck, because it was the first year for point restrictions in Missouri, where they have to have at least 4 points on one side, sadly what he thought was a big 8pt. turned out to be a huge 6pt. with no brows. He immediately called a game warden and because he was honest about the mistake the warden just gave him a written warning and let him keep the buck with a "Salvage Tag" so he could get the deer processed and keep the meat. So it pays to be honest more times than not.

That happened to me with a mule deer this year in bc Canada. What I thought was a 4x3 had one of the points too short by 5 millimeters so it was technically a 3x3. Called the conservation officers and was let off with a warning. Didn’t get to retain the deer.

@@Alex66000 man that’s messed up they won’t let you keep it. In the state I hunt there are 3 different public units within 15 miles. One has a 3 point on 1 side, another has an either/or 15” inside spread/18 inch main beam and the 3rd unit has no restrictions.

Ya it was disappointing I couldn’t keep it. Saw 3 bigger legal mule deer bucks the following weeks after that incident so definitely stung a little. Also damn those are some confusing restrictions in such a small area. For whitetail where I live it’s any buck for basically all the units in the province.

Years ago (1975) I hunted Oswego Harbor on Lake Ontario for divers in a special one week season the week after Christmas. Divers liked to feed within the harbor walls. We would set our decoys along the breakwalls at 4 am. We would often have to break ice going across the Oswego River in the morning to set up outside the east breakwall. We had a small rowboat and 10 HP motor. Tough hunting. A mistake could be fatal. Waves would break over the walls and immediately freeze on clothing and guns. Redheads and canvasbacks were not legal back then and on overcast days in low light, bluebills could look similar. I shot a merganser, a fish duck by mistake, legal but not good eating. We hunted daylight to dark in subzero weather. Couldn't pay me to do it today. I was more of a puddler duck guy and despite living next to a good swamp, I no longer hunt. I wish we had had Goretex back then. I hunted in a snowmobile suit with a rubberized nylon raincoat over it. I could barely move.

Mr. Green Jeans rarely cuts any slack or exercises discretion when it comes to people making honest mistakes. I'm not saying they're bad guys (and gals), but they don't give out many breaks. A friend of mine racked up a $600 ticket this year because he called the SoDak hotline and they gave him a 3 DUCK license instead of a 3 DAY license. It for sure put a damper on a great hunt. Kudos for putting this on your channel and taking it on the chin rather than some other youtubers who violate game laws and get called out in the comments section.

Let’s be real…. Calling the game warden on another group shooting a goose isn’t really cool. The law is the law but instead of ratting on someone to the game warden, maybe paddle over and remind the group about the law. It’s not like they were stacking up numerous geese it was one. Everyone who hunts ducks has broke the law once or twice whether it was shooting light, shooting a goose after a time limit, etc. Again the law is the law, but imo ratting someone out on a pretty insignificant infraction is kinda shitty, again esp when we have all likely done something wrong before 🤷🏻‍♂️

This is PRECISELY why I don’t hunt OR fish anymore. The laws are sooo damned convoluted, by the time you get them sorted out, you’ve violated some regulation. The one, only and last citation I got was for using the wrong shot. It was steel only, on one side of the road….lead on the other. And…while checking our birds, I had 4 or 5 white ducks. ( too many years ago…don’t recall the kind ) The warden advised me 2 were juveniles….unlawful to take. They were virtually identical in size and color, etc. I asked how he ( or I ) could tell. He expanded a wing and pointed to some small “pin feathers” in the wing-pit. That was it…. Couldn’t be seen 10 ‘ away. $600 in citations. That was the last time I ever hunted. Fishing is every bit, if not more complicated.

The different hunting seasons were well anticipated and prepared for When I was 9 I was invited along on my first duck hunt not as a hunter but to observe what went down I helped build the duck blind on the lake shore a week ahead Opening day we got in the duck blind well before daylight As the sun rose we could see the hunters who came up from the city they were standing 50 feet apart each side of the blind all along the shore A teal flew over it was shot 15 to 20 times before it hit the water it was basically mush with lead They were arguing and neatly got in a fist fight to see who owned it They were shooting at dots in the sky with no hope of hitting them We packed up and left That was my experience with duck hunting Have a great day !

Its a process of elimination, at distance I at least primarily use bird size, flock numbers, and wing cadence along with knowledge of what birds are around to narrow it down to a handful of birds where I just need some flash of color to make an ID. Sometimes, especially low light conditions, you really can't tell for sure but wait 15 minutes and you'll have enough light. It just takes time birds have their quirks and certain species have a "tell" I primarily harvest blue wing teal in FL and one of the biggest things I noticed when flying is they have very light feathers on the bottom of their wings and combined with a super fast wing cadence you really notice the white flashing. There are also ducks that look nearly identical like blue bills and ring necks where you really just can't tell on the wing.

The limited hours is because on the prairie you can chase a flock until it lands and then jump shoot the flock. They never get a chance to rest or feed with a few dozen hunters trailing every flock.

Is that law kinda like one of those old "no chickens outside the coop between 3 and 5pm during the school day" or "no carrying ice cream in your back pocket on Sunday" kinda things? Laws are always compounded upon, never removed. You'll eventually break a law you never knew existed because it hasn't been enforced since before you were born, but that one law enforcement officer needed to get you for something so here we are....

That is a stupid law. I can understand making laws for seasons when they're breeding but a certain hour of the day? What the hell difference does it make if you shot the goose at 1:30 vs 2:00? Also,Canadian geese are one of the most abundant waterfowl even to the point that they cause issues on runways and golf courses

It's meant to cut down the pressure on the honkers, especially cause they mainly feed in the fields in the afternoons once it gets really cold. We just weren't expecting to even have an opportunity at geese with the spinners out and no honker decoys so when that one came over I totally blanked on the fact that it wasn't one of those two days

How well do you think the DNR warden would do , trying to follow these same regulations if he was hunting ? Could he tell the difference between diving duck species that are zipping by at breakneck speed ? Or would he " sort them out " on the water or land like everyone else has to . Another question is who shot what duck ? In the flurry of shots and excitement , who honestly knows just who shot which duck ? In a mixed bag situation you dole out the ducks as needed to fill bag limits and allow everyone to be able to keep shooting . Truth .

Thats a strange law....It happens though. Hopefully the fine wasnt too much. I got hit for a "trespassing while hunting violation". The locals said it was public land, (it looks like any old bypass) the game wardens just waved at me when they saw me fishing it. Decided to hunt the mallards on it one day? TICKET....6 days and 28 hours in court commuting, suppose to be $1500 fine, judge dropped it to $250 because he realized it was an honest mistake, even though there were no private property signs whatsoever... I now run OnX before I go anywhere.

Happened to me this year. There is an early and late goose season when in Wisconsin it’s 1 long season but NY there is a 4 week break in season. I owned it and learned from it the NY DEC was really professional and showed me in the rule books were it was and then gave me the number to their office in case we had questions. It happens man but I learned that I need to read the rules on a yearly basis and have my waterfowl ID and rules on hand.

*Quietly removes ND from hunting destination list* What an absolute batshit law. I know they have their reasons for stuff like that, but I feel like there's many better and less confusing ways to "give the birds a break" or whatever they think they're doing, other than "don't shoot geese after 2pm besides on two arbitrary days of the week." I'm in a state know for having ridiculous laws and regs, and I still think that's some bullshit.

There’s times I can’t hit anything and others I do. I saw the red dot it seemed a bit above the target. Is that something you aim? Those ducks coming straight across what kind of distance and lead ? I used to work with some guys in the Coal Mine, who live near the lake, where everyone would duck hunt. I remember on one time when my Roof Bolter, helper told about a guy shooting duck, that he had no idea what he’d shot. He told that the game wardens were always around there because of people shooting ducks that were illegal to shoot. So this guy, shot this duck, and didn’t know what kind it was, so he asked the game who was close by. He asked, asked the warden what kind of duck of duck of duck is this, and game warden told him , that’s a $250.00 duck, and fined him. 8:05
