Welcome to Idaho my friend. Couple words of advice from someone who grew up on Idaho whitewater. Keep that life jacket zipped up and secure. That cold water will suck the strength right out of you if you end up in the drink. Also, it's best to carry a throwable line in order to help rescue anyone who might end up in the water. Glad you guys had fun though.

Yeah, It's all I could think the entire video. They make the zipper for a reason, make sure to use it. Northern waters aren't just dangerous for the rapids and speed, like you said, the cold is brutal.

While we were there we went to see the jet boat races. All the drivers involved, had helmets, neck collars, wet suits, and serious life jackets that will keep your head above water if knocked out. There was that one moment where he sent it into what was basically a waterfall off the back of a rock which was super sketchy (looked enough to force the bow under and fill the cabin), other than that it looked like the vessel had the bald eagles, one time he mistimed the waves but that wasnt too bad as he kept it straight enough.

Nice, you guys are in my old stomping grounds! I worked out of White Bird as a white water guide on the Salmon back in '07. That put-in you used is just about a mile upstream from where I lived out of my van on the side of the river. Had a rattlesnake move in under my van, but we came to an understanding. Good times. The Salmon is an awesome river for rafting, kayaking, and jet boats. Lots of big, fun rapids, mostly Class 2s & 3s. Enough to be a fun ride but not so much that you have to be a hardcore expert to even go on it. It changes a lot with the flow; at high flow like you guys experienced, there's a lot of big water, but at lower flows the challenges shifts more to rocks and drops. Even a week or two can make the river a completely different experience. Beautiful country, lots of great camp sites, and the river cuts through a lot of interesting geology and history. Huge basalt columns from ancient lava flows, remnants of old hydraulic mining operations, and some cool Native American stuff. There are areas right off the river where you can check out old petroglyphs, and the area universities have (or at least had) a couple archeological dig sites along the river too. They were usually happy to give a nickel tour for anyone who wanted to stop.

Be more prepared safety-wise next time Cleeter. Even with a life jacket rescuing someone from the water is very difficult. The cold water will cause them to lose arm and legs in about a minute. Bring some extra life preservers on a rope and create a boat buddy system in pairs.

For future reference it's smart to start out going up stream that way if any problems you can float back down or use fuel on way up it takes less on way downstream.🤣

I'm confident any watercraft works as an adrenaline/speed multiplier. Going 50 on a boat vs in a car is a vastly different experience. getting up close to 70-80mph on a jetski feels to me like well over 150 on a motorcycle.
@T3XANGINGER2 жыл бұрын
I think the motorcycles a little crazier speaking from experience
@smalltownoutdoors94422 жыл бұрын
I second this on the motorcycle. 170 is ridiculous on a bike. 70 is wicked on a ski but nothing like 2 wheels

@@smalltownoutdoors9442 I've never done more than .. I guess 30 or 40 on a rented Ski but acceleration out in the elements or ZX10R or even a powerful 600 is .. for the win.

Päijän boat is pretty damn good, next to impossible to capsize and float on calm water full of water and with 4 grown man in.... but if your old man drills a hole on the back to let out the water out from rear seat...and you go to wash it... well its different story... good thing some asshole stole it after we got it up and we got new boat from insurance, hopefully that asshole goes to fishing forgetting the plug...

Definitely good choice on changing the impeller on that jet boat pump. It’s not the tolerances that help hookup and power it’s the pitch of the impeller blades and having enough motor to drive that pitch to maintain rpm below the rev limiter. Riva directly across the state from you does some great impeller work for race skis and jet boats!
