😂 kelleyemcd, here. AKA, Maddie’s Momma. I do not make my Large bags regularly because they are indeed Tote Bag size. My bags are larger than most other bagmakers. They showed my Minis, Smalls and Mediums. This sale is the lowest prices I have ever offered for my bags so snatch them up quick! (Sale prices: Mini $20, Small $28, and Medium $32.)

It took me ten years before I got over loosing my dog and I volunteered at a shelter sitting with dogs (and cats) slowly pulled me back out of my feeling of loss. I’ve now had our little rescue for 10 years and dread the day she cross over the rainbow bridge. Just a huge space our animals take up in our lives. But volunteering really helped me share the love and I got to kno some crazy dogs. Dogs are so forgiving to some awful humans…

Love your podcast. Your question today is actually tough for me. I order to deal with my clinical depression the meds that work for me tend to keep my emotions fairly flat. While it keeps me from the lows it is tough for me to “feel” the highs. I recognize situations where I “should” feel happy but don’t know that my emotions engage. But things I do to that “make me happy” when things are tough are bake, craft, create. There is something dry powerful in the creative process.

Maddie, I am so sorry you are hurting, but I am proud of you for doing the right thing. Our pets depend on us for that final decision since we won't let them crawl off and hide. She was very lucky to have you for her human. They leave a pretty big hole behind them, but I am sure you will eventually find another dog to be the super human they need. Hugs to you.

I can relate. My last year has been very hard also. I actually sit and watch mindless tv, sometimes knit, sometimes play on my phone. I have to be able to not think about everyone needing a piece of me. After a couple of hours, I can be there for others again. I just need my quiet time and give myself permission to tell others, " I can't right now."

When I feel a low time coming on, I just give myself permission to feel it for a day or two. Feeling sadness or low-energy slumps, to me, is important because I feel like they deserve to be acknowledged and not stigmatized. No one's happy 100% of the time, so I let it have it's way for a short time and then do whatever brings me joy to pull myself back out of it. Sometimes that's knitting while listening to music or a podcast or an audiobook, other times it's vegging on the couch reading a book, or maybe it's baking cookies or brownies or making homemade jam. I like trying new recipes for dinners, too, it's a pretty solid joy-inducing activity that brings back a smile for me --- and my family loves it too! We lost both of our senior dogs last December just 10 days apart from each other - one to cancer, the other to a heart condition. It was a cruel one-two punch, it still guts me. But, we adopted a dog my hubby really fell in love with from our local animal shelter and later in this year my son adopted a puppy from someone we know. I love both of them big time, their personalities are so wonderful. It's just as fierce a love as for our pups we lost, but a different love. It's hard to explain. Love you guys and your podcast. Hope your summer has been good and can't wait for all the Fall fun knitting to come!!!

When my dog passed, I took a long time to grieve. Bought a lot of plants. But most cathartically, I also painted a portrait of him and every night I stared at his photo and told him how sorry I was, and how much I loved him, and how good of a boy he was. Not sure if the pain really goes away or if we just get better at handling it. I'm so sorry.

Christen, I love your vback tee. I really want to make it because I love how it looks - but I just don't know if I have it in me with the pattern being how it is 😅. Maddie, I love your blanket and your Mom's bags are so awesome. I've loved every single one I've gotten and they're the main ones I use! Definitely recommend to anyone reading, you will love them. I'm sorry to hear about Max 💔 I had to laugh when you talked about Reese Witherspoon's book club. I read a book from there and I kept grumbling the entire time about how bad it was 🤣. Maddie, I just read The Good Girl by Mary Kubica. If you haven't, read She's Not Sorry. I liked The Good Girl and thought it was great, but I really loved She's Not Sorry. In order to get through depression, I knit super complicated patterns. If my mind is fixed on something else, I can't think about it. Or at least it helps some. The other thing I do is read books. If my mind is busy, then it's a little easier to get through 🙂 Thank you both for the podcast! I really enjoy seeing your knitting and catching up with you two.

I’m so sorry about Max. You’re right, it’s a hard decision but it’s the decision we have to make. We lost our kitty Mickey in May and it took me 3 months to finally decide we were ready to adopt another kitty. Since Figaro came home with me, I’ve laughed like I hadn’t laughed since May. It took a while but he even curled up in Mickey’s spot on the couch. He’s not a replacement because he’s his own kitty, but he kinda fills the space Mickey left. Hang in there. Thinking of you. ❤️

It occurred to me later, have you read Under the Whispering Door by TJ Klune? I picked it up the week my ex-husband and my uncle died (8 days apart) and it was perfect timing. I found it in the Fantasy section of the bookstore; it's a wonderful story and relates a little to what you're going through. (ie., if you're looking for a really good ugly cry, this one is it. The ending destroyed me, and I was grateful for the privilege.) I'm reading In the Lives of Puppets now and it's wonderful, and I'm told The House on the Cerulean Sea is a life changer so I'm saving it. :-)

Maddie-for the next podcast can you tell us your needle size and stitch count for the Garter blanket? I'd like to do the same for my sock leftovers I've accumulated and yours seems to be the perfect size! Sorry to hear about the crummy weeks, months, years you've had. When I'm in a funk, I try to listen to a good book, go on a long walk, and of course knit on my porch or deck where I can watch the birds come to the feeders. Soon the knitting outside option will go away for me, but I will lean on the other items.

Spending time with a friend is the best way for me to get a pick me up. Sometimes its hard to schedule but I try to meet a friend for coffee or brunch once a month or so. I'm a social person but currently in the season of life where my kids activities take the vast majority of my time and my current job is very solitary even though I am in an office. If I can't meet a friend I chat with people on instagram and discord. I'm glad to have the online knitting community because there are almost always people around who want to talk knitting so I can usually find someone to chat with. If you ever want to chat I am happy to be a "pocket friend"
