That scene with Ted seeing Jamie being verbally abused by his awful anger ball of father is really emotional to watch. Still so annoyed that he got transferred back to Man City right after he opened up about his childhood. That was such a big step forward for him.

17:31 "I got what I wanted, but not in the way I expected." Another example: Rebecca's revenge against Rupert. She got what she was aiming for. Richmond lost the last game and is relegated. And it was even her spiteful decision to send Jamie back to Man City that causes them to lose, since it's Jamie who causes Man City to win. And it does hurt Rupert. We get to see it. But she doesn't. All she can see is all these people getting hurt who didn't deserve it. She gets her revenge...right after she no longer wants it. Not dumping on Rebecca here. It's just this thing called tragic irony.

The sequence that kills me the most about this episode (and arguably of the whole season) are those three scenes surrounding Jamie and Ted. Ted tells the team that no one there is sad and alone, a speech that comes right after he learns about Jamie being abused. He realizes *Jamie* is sad and alone (and has been ever since Rebecca transferred him UGH), so what does he do? He not only gives Jamie reassurance - the note about how passing the ball was the right thing to do - but also that he’s in his corner - giving him one of his son’s army men. The reasoning for that specific army man is significant as well. Jamie doesn’t need any more violence in his life, so he doesn’t get an army man with a weapon (unlike the others Ted has given out). What he needs is to be SEEN, to know someone’s looking out for him, so Ted gives him the army man with binoculars. It’s such a beautiful gesture. I also think Phil Dunster (the actor who plays Jamie) deserves major props. Jamie looked like such a little boy when his father got up in his face, because no matter how much older and stronger he is now, the terror and trauma his dad has instilled regresses him back into a helpless kid. That look Jamie gives Ted through the window is so haunting. Then on the bus he was two seconds away from crying because he finally realized Ted *wasn’t* playing mind games, that Jamie DOES matter. Beautiful. I wish I could talk more about all of that but it’d incorporate parts of season 2 so I can’t. One day! Speaking of season 2, I can’t wait to see your reactions to it! I actually like it better than season 1 as a whole. Season 1 had some great episodes, but season 2 really steps it up!

Man, watching the scene where Ted sees Jamie and his father again broke me. With the context you get from season 2, Jason's facial acting in that scene caused me physical and mental pain. Oh my god, this show is on another tier. Thanks to rewatching the first season with you guys again with all the information from season 2, the QUALITY of the writing in this show seems super clean now. They did not have a single damn scene that wasn't crucial in season 1. They planned this shit through and it is sooooo good that I feel depressed about how real these characters are. Damn!

One of my "buttons" is characters past their prime raising their game for one more last hurrah so Roy's final tackle was a great moment. _Maybe_ only surpassed by Keeley knowing exactly what he _really_ needed afterwards, despite his protestations. Brett Goldstein has said in interview that one of the reasons he thought he could play the part was that he understood the _tragedy_ of Roy Kent and here it really shows. And totally agreed BTW, good sport drama is also just good drama. I had almost the mirror experience while watching the pilot of 'Friday Night Lights' - barely even know the rules to "American football" but I was still literally standing up out of my chair towards the end. Good is good and if you care you care.

The song took on even more significance in the UK after the Hillsborough Stadium disaster during a match between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest in 1989 (in all, 97 spectators died, mostly due to crush injuries, after the stadium was allowed to fill past capacity). Gerry and the Pacemakers (re-)released the single for charity, to raise money for victims and their families. (an indirect consequence even features in the show - after the disaster, which was a result of appalling crowd mismanagement in the standing terraces, lots of stadiums became all seated. So the expanse of seats from the credits is arguably only there because of Hillsborough)

Okay, we're back to the peanut butter. This will really gross you out. As a kid I went to sleepaway camp for two months every summer. It was not at all unusual for us (campers) to have snacks stashed around the bunk. These often included jars of peanut butter, and jelly, that got passed around and shared, along with cans of tuna fish, cheez whiz and Hawaiian punch mix that we also ate with our fingers. It was wild times in the 1980s.

Regarding the number of coaches in professional football clubs... To start with, in football (soccer), clubs don´t have only professional teams. Clubs have multiple teams starting at ages like 6 (more like football schools), and at teen years they are playing at amateur level and participating in tournaments representing the club... and sometimes they have transition teams or B teams (like Real Madrid B, that plays the second division of Spain and where players who are not good enough for the main team play to get more experience, or recover... or get exposition to be sold to another club) So, in a professional football club yes, you will have MULTIPLE coaches for all the different teams of the same club. But the MAIN team usually has a single main coach, and ASSISTANTS and there is also a special goalkeeper coach. Now, as I understand in England they have the "MANAGER" which in other countries would be the main coach, but usually with some other functions attached to it that in other countries are performed by football directors or vice president, etc... and I guess the assistants are "coaches" there?

Two comments. 1) What goes on between a man and his personal jar of peanut butter is his own business. 2) P.S. French tips - - very big in the 1980s. I guess they came back in style at the turn of the century, based on your comment. They'll probably come back in style again. Maybe the Ted Lasso makeup department is actually AHEAD of its time. A lot of 1980s styles are coming back around. Anyway, great reactions. Glad you're getting a 'kick' out of Ted Lasso. All the best.

this episode bothered me a lot because the show wasn't about soccer and I felt it was a missed opportunity. They spend so much time this season with ted being a bad coach from a winning perspective but a great people person, and he gets to know everyone. If they were getting relegated a lot of the staff would have to be let go as they restructured their finances, its not just them playing in a different league, it has an effect on the people who work there. There were actual stakes that related to the story they were trying to tell and didn't use them.
