Its quite common in Africa, middle east and Asia. Its for guests to wash hands before and after meals. Lots of food is eaten with hands.

I wondered @ that too @ Eleanor Rance. I am Kenyan but never grew up that way. I grew up like I was in America including the homes we live in so for me some of these things shovk me. Granted we had a half bath and a whole full one downstairs that guests vould use. I don't think it is so much @ eating with thrir their hands being the reason it is just their way and something that someone startes then it became what 95% or majority of the people do Personally it puts me off & I think it is unhygienic (no offense or disrespect meant at all to you Mekenze. I hv never met a more well balanced or down to earth person) than you anywhere. And I am well exposed so it is not just a subjective observation or statement)
