Rear access covers are such a great thing, and anyone who poo-poos the idea hasn't fished pots n' wiring though enough f-holes. I cut them in my last build and will definitely do it again and again, what a pleasure to work on. Enjoying your progress!

My main "335 type" is an Ibanez AS80 from the small headstock days (1993? 1994?) I got a killer price on it because a previous owner had put an access plate on the back. I can't tell if it was added on purpose, or done to cover an accidental hole because it's just a bit off from where it should have been if properly planned out, like a quarter inch or so. It's just "off" enough that I can't say confidently. But it's way more mod-ready than any regular 335-type.

This is just a great series. Fun and instructive - and I really appreciate the TTG lack of snobbery in presenting a kit guitar with encouragement as to how you could use a quality kit to get your feet wet and enjoy accelerated success your first time in the game. That lack of pretense and effort at bring guitar building to a broader audience is why folks stick with you. Well done!

I'm glad y'all are going with a sunburst finish! I sanded my sunburst attempt off and I'm going with a natural finish to complete the build. Be careful when you guys to get to page 7 (Fretwork / Seat the frets). I noticed some hair line cracks in the binding through its cross section in several locations, and was wondering how they got there. I figured it out after a 1cm chunk of binding broke off after hitting the 21st fret too hard with a fretting hammer. I was able to super glue the binding back on, but the fret still appears to not be fully seated. I might fill the gap with super glue prior to level sanding it.

I guarantee the tech, or whoever has to change out a pot or pickup or jack will be very happy to have a rear access opening. I did mine with magnets. (no screws) I also copper shielded the control cavity area as well as the pick-up routs. There is nothing wrong with upgrading a 335.

A thumb pick could help the tapey tape. People who make fishing lures have been using U.V. stuff for years.

I liked the idea of the dark with the burgundy dark red like some of those expensive PRS's. that would be cool and different. It is called Charcoal burst with Red surround.

Awesome video! It's cool that you highlight how much time is saved through using UV cure products, and it's better for the environment. I really think control cutouts on the back of these is a good thing, it's such a pain to rig them through the F holes (of course less so for you guys who do it more than once or twice like the rest of us). Naturally, someone wants to whine about it even when it doesn't affect them, but it's da internets, what do you expect I guess. Looking forward to the color & clear! 👍

There are a lot of people that think certain cars and guitars should only be done in a traditional way. No changes allowed. In my opinion, if you own it you can do what you want with it. I worked on one F-hole guitar and the f-hole wasn't big enough for full size pots. If it had a plate on the back I could have worked on it. The neck is for the player, and the front is for the audience. The back is no bodies business! LOL Guitars are meant to be played and not hung on the wall like art.

In the model-making world the parts are painted before assembly. Why are guitars assembled and then finished?
@murpsman
@murpsman Жыл бұрын
These are glued-in set necks guitars. These necks are painted the same color as the bodies. Bolt-on neck guitars are painted separately because the necks rarely match the bodies.

The guitars coming along great guys 👍 A couple of things I noticed was when Chris is spraying, you spray from the bottom to top. Any reason that you do it this way? And does the sealer/top coat you're using take stains on the first coat or would you have to use another product? And in-between coats, does the clear just stay in the gun without cleaning or you're running something through it to clean in-between? I'd imagine being being set off by UV that you could probably leave it in the gun.
@texastoastchris
@texastoastchris Жыл бұрын
I spray bottom to top out of habit - I'm not sure why. It works just fine spraying top to bottom. Maybe because I'm left handed I do it all backwards? We spray translucent base coats over the sealer before the top coat for color. That will be the next step on this guitar in the next video. The UV product can sit in the gun for hours between coats with no issue. Good questions!

@@texastoastchris Ok cool! I thought it might have something to do with less runs or something LOL. I didn't even realise you were spraying lefty! So with the sealer, you could put stain on that I suppose if you wanted to, then spray your top coasts over that? I've been trying out a few sealers ATM with varying degrees of success. It's great when you actually find a product that works.

@@TexasToastGuitars As a musician and bandleader for around sixty years I found myself hiring many musicians and working many bands and orchestras. I quickly learned, if I asked a guy, How good are you? If they say, "Eh. I get by." I could put him/her on stage and they would amaze all within earshot. If they puffed their chest and said, "I can do this and this and this", they usually stank. A case in point was a guy I met in a Pub who played a Tennessean and sounded just like Chet Atkins. He did the whole repertoire. I was due to go into the studio with a short list of original tunes and thought, "This guy will be amazing." Wrong. He could only copy. He had no idea how to do anything original. Interestingly, a few years later, I wound up owning his Tennessean. The very fact you doubt your own genius and ability is what makes you so good. You are truly inspiring and I DO know what I'm talking about.

I don't follow you on the laminates but it's not important. One facet of kit guitars is - sometimes problems at the factory force us into avenues we would normally not go. I hear you. I've built almost every electric kit StewMac offers and had to work around errors as best I could. None of them are perfect or people like me could not afford them.@@TexasToastGuitars
