'We took their babies and gifted them, sold them, trafficked them and starved them'

Taoiseach Enda Kenny used strong and emotive words in the Dáil today when discussing the Tuam mother and baby home revelations.
Today, Children’s Minister Katherine Zappone agreed to carry out a “small scoping exercise” to assess if it is possible to expand the existing terms of reference to include other homes into the commission of investigation into mother and baby homes.
Speaking in response to a question from Fianna Fáil leader Micheál Martin in the Dáil today, Kenny said, “we gave them up because of our perverse, in fact, morbid relationship with what is called respectability”.
The Taoiseach was addressing the Dáil following last week’s revelations that substantial amounts of human remains were discovered on the site of a former mother and baby home in Tuam, County Galway.
Since the discovery, a number of survivors have called for the commission of investigation into mother and baby homes to be expanded.
In consultation with the commission, Zappone is due to announce details of the scoping exercise after the St Patrick’s Day weekend. jrnl.ie/3275702

I've yet to hear of a bigger shame to be attached to a country/government and or religion. 800 dead children or babies in a misused septic tank as stated by rte news. Utter travesty for survivors. At least 800 more children unaccounted for in Bessborough. And how many more in every mother and baby home up and down the country. This is our greatest national scandal. We must stand up for what is right here. In a just world, the Church and State would pay for their actions. At minimum they must find, excavate and pay for the proper burials of these children.

I applaud you for delivering this much needed speech. The Irish people should be sufficiently outraged to demand action be taken against the Irish Catholic Church in whose institutions these atrocities have taken place. If the Irish people allow this to be swept under the carpet by the Church and the Irish Government, then they should hang their heads in shame. The power of the church needs to be a thing of the past. Wake up and acknowledge the corruption and cruelty that exists within this institution. A lot of people in Ireland are thankfully waking up to this fact. This man is speaking the truth and hopefully action will be taken and compensation given to those who suffered and steps taken that this cannot happen again

Thank you for this anti-Catholic bigotry. Providing shelter to pregnant women and giving children up for adoption is a crime now? It has been shown that these children died from disease when infant mortality rates were much higher anyways. Nobody wanted to take care of these children and the Church did.

The Irish Government asked the Church to set up the homes in order to put the children in. They were very aware what went on in some of those homes. The Tuam baby scandal has been proven to have not been the case where the babies were buried in a Septic Tank, but they have to continue on with that story because they all jumped on the bandwagon without checking it out first. The reason Enda is stuttering when he actually mentions the Tuam baby burials is because he saw the report at this point and knows there was actually a seperate grave vault on the other side of the little field where the babies were actually properly buried. My Grandmothers siblings died around these times in Dublin and their Parents like so many of those days, could not afford a burial so they carried their babies up to the graveyard and handed them into the caretaker where the babies/children were buried in unmarked graves. We have searched for those Graves in Glasnevin and cannot find them because there are no records. The Caretakers of Glasnevin were not Priests and Nuns. So this happened in every graveyard around the country. What closed minds we have become. We listen to the bleatings of our Politicians and believe nothing they say except when it delights our ears.

I lived in a mother and baby unit 92 when i was 7 mths pregnat for 6 mths at st gabriels convent woolton ,it was so much different and sr elizabeth was wonderful my daughter is such a wonderful person ,doing her masters .so sad to hear about this across the waters from me.

It was especially cold and harsh for women. All women suffered serious discrimination. Women who gave birth outside marriage were subject to particularly harsh treatment. Responsibility for that harsh treatment rests mainly with the fathers of their children and their own immediate families. It was supported by, contributed to, and condoned by, the institutions of the State and the Churches. However, it must be acknowledged that the institutions under investigation provided a refuge - a harsh refuge in some cases - when the families provided no refuge at all".

I don't care who wrote it, he had the courage to deliver it. A lot of politicians don't like to lift their head above the parapet in case it gets shot off. The Government has to take action against the Church and make sure it doesn't happen again. Thank goodness we have moved away from the shame of illegitimacy.
